    I have some AS5 (& 2 & 3!) already so would make sense I guess to use that unless I could get this magical MX-2 stuff delivered with the cooler.

    The weight of the TrUE Copper in my vertical system could be an issue it seems? I will have to have a measure up see if a TrUE would even fit in there too I guess.

    Am I right in saying the Noctua NF-P12 fan doesn't have PWM control, it looks to come with a 3 pin connector and some leads including resistors?

      I would use what you have paste wise if it's still good. Any more than a couple of years and the particles of silver or ceramic (depending on the paste) tend to gravitate towards the bottom.

      You shouldn't have much of an issue with a TrUE Copper with a UD3 board. Mine is the strongest, least flexible I have ever seen. The TrUE comes with a nice solid back-plate too, so as long as your case mounts for the motherboard are up to it, you'll be just fine. It would be good to be more careful when transporting the case around though. Lay the PC so the motherboard is on the bottom when moving.

      I can control my Noctua fan with SpeedFan, you just need to go to Configure > Advanced > Chip > IT8718F at $290 on ISA and change PWM 1 mode to Software Controlled.

      Pictures below are the fan at 1380 RPM and 900 RPM. Note, adjusting lower than 50% causes the fan to stop. Virtually no change in volume though, maybe just slight. They're 19.8dB at max, 16.9db at 1100RPM and 12.6dB at 900 RPM.

        Second pic, fan control to 50%, 900RPM (same speed as if you used the ultra-low-noise adapter, the blue one).

        Ignore the core temps speedfan shows, I idle at 37c with a properly calibrated RealTemp.

            Check out the Noctua NH-C12P down-draft cpu cooler.
            This setup weighs 730 grams (fan included), and is only 114mm tall with the fan attached.
            I prefer the down-draft coolers for their improved cooling of nearby mobo components.

            TweakTown has an excellent review of the Noctua NH-C12P.
            Many other quality websites have reviewed the Noctua products.

            I use Arctic Ceramique and like it. I bought the 22 gram large setup and this will probably cover me for 500 or more years.

              Advantages of a down-draft cooler:
              • Offers more airflow to surrounding components.
              • If you have a side case fan, and they both align, you get a better feed of fresh cool air to the HSF.


              Disadvantages:
              • Much less warm air from the HSF is exhausted straight away. The mere presence of this warmer air will warm up the rest of the atmosphere in the case to a point, causing higher case temps.
              • In cases with the PSU at the bottom and no top extraction, pockets of hot air can form, usually at the top of the case or trapped between bundles of wires. This air again heats up other air passing by.


              It's worth noting on the EP45-UD3P that Gigabyte, for some unknown reason, have placed a cap on the Northbridge heatsink, preventing much top down airflow getting to it. You might want to remove it if you go for a top-down cooler.

              To summarise the thermal paste issue. There really really really is nothing between the top manufacturers and brands. Take a look over at [H]ard OCP and you'll see the only radical difference in temperatures was when they used American cheese for paste. The test failed quite quick with the cheese, but maybe it was because the CPU didn't like the taste...

              Arctic Silver when fully cured will be maybe a degree or so lower in load temperatures than MX-2, TX-2, Chillfactor etc but it can take up to 200 hours to cure. If you use your PC for 4 hours a day, that's 50 Days. If you really want cutting edge thermal paste then like I said, diamond based is best. Diamonds have 5 times the thermal conductivity of Copper and over 4 times the conductivity of Silver.

                The TrUE Copper is just too heavy and over twice the price, I think it is going to be the TrUE Black 120 with MX-2.
                What I need to decide on is, do I NEED a PWM (4 pin) fan or would the Noctua NF-P12 at a fixed speed be adequate for my cooling needs

                  The Nocutua should be fine. It's quieter than most fans already, plus you can either use the low noise adapter (black connector), or dial it down using speedfan.

                  The TrUE copper is heavy, but it sounds worse than it is. As long as the motherboard is sound and the case is of reasonable quality, you wouldn.t have any problems. Its only moving the case where you need to be careful, and even then risk is minimal. Copper is expensive though, that's why most heatsinks will use aluminium for the most part with a small amount of copper at the base and for the heatpipes.

                  According to the motherboard manual, the CPU fan header has two speed control pins. I'm presuming the fourth pin is for PWM control and pin two is a line that can be voltage controlled, usually between 12v and 5v. You just need to set CPU Smart Fan Mode to [Voltage] in the BIOS.

                    I am normally running 445 x 9 but I just raised the fsb to 450 for you DanW. All the other bios settings are the same. At 445 it is 24hr prime95 stable, and currently priming at 450 for about 30mins, blend. Temps and vdroop are pretty much the same as when fsb was 445 so I do not foresee a problem with 450x9. My goal was just to hit 4ghz, prime stable for 24hrs with the lowest juice possible. I guess if I had an inclination I could juice up the vcore to the mid 1.30v and work the speed up to 4.2-4.5ghz, but frankly I doubt I will notice that much of difference over 4ghz for what I am using this box for. Maybe one day for $hits and giggles I might just do that.

                    I am using relatively low voltages across the board and I am using 4 sticks of ram. For the most part, my bios settings are fairly similar to yours. As you are having problem at 450+, I would try loosen some of the Advanced memory timing. I have mine at auto but the auto settings are looser than yours.

                          Yeah, usually, I find that people should loosening advanced memory timings and the static tRead Values before upping voltage as the added heat doesn't help things. Although I can't really take credit for this, as some of the more astute oc'ers on this board and in this thread for this matter have eluded to this already. So a hearty toast to those fine people.

                            I tried Prime, it froze Windows about 5 minutes in. I guess I might need to up the voltage a little seen as though yours were based on 445FSB.

                              A quicj=k bump of vcore to around 1.33-1.35v and another test would be useful to do, and stress test for 1 hour if temps worry you (until you get your new HSF).

                              If it still freezes, my instinct tells me you should try MCH/DRAM term and A&B refs on auto. I tried all sorts of combinations personally and only found stability in Prime Large FFT on auto. YMMV though, as I'm running 4 cores.
