Ok since you guys must enjoy my stories...

I kept retesting/changing my TIM and heatsink so many times that I emptied my tube of MX-2... lol The plunger is deceptive on where it will end.

I didn't think my AS5 had enough left in the tube to do it... The plunger was almost all the way in.. but it did, just barely. Guess what.. I think it lowered my temps 2 degrees (with the switch to AS5) and all before it has had a chance to cure.

I am using D-and-W's 4.08Ghz template.. and now I'm at...

      7 loops of IBT............................................... ... 69
Prime95 custom torture with in place FFT's......... 59
      Idle.............................................. ............... 40

      room ambient is 26.667 degrees

Maybe the 60 CFM fan on my 120 cooler is not enough... "I need more power Scotty" Wait.. no I need less power, but more speed!!

Lapping my HSF resulted in a 0C decrease in my temps.

And I used the Broadway method of application... that is to say, thick and heavy just kidding. However, I applied my paste in a blob about 1/4" in the center of my CPU, attached it to the mobo, then removed it and checked the spread. I was satisfied with it, so I cleaned it thoroughly and reapplied the same amount. At 4.608GHz my idle temp was 38C and my load temp was 56C --- on air.

Yep, lapping can give varied results. For example lapping an already flat surface will give minimal gains, maybe a couple of degrees at best. If you have an obviously concave/convex/uneven surface however it can work wonders.

Take a razor blade and lie it blades edge down onto the surface you're thinging of lapping. If you can either rock the blade back and forth, or see a gap in the middle between surface and blade, lapping could offer good improvements.

If you're going to do it though, be careful. A motherboard may survive a knock or two if you're lucky, but a processor is much more fragile. Use the plastic cover the CPU came with if it was an OEM or half of the plastic case thing if it was a retail version. Apply pressure evenly and only in the area of the circular pin contacts, not the fragile components in the centre.

Start with a low grit rough paper first, and don't use any water or oil. I had the easiest time using 600 grit followed by 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600. Tape the paper onto a thick piece of glass. An uneven sanding surface will obviously give an uneven lapping. Light circular motions stripped the nickel off the easiest, and at the smothist grit, sanding in a line gave the best finish. If you're lapping you may as well go for a mirror finish, it only takes another 20 minutes or so.

Lapping a heatsink is much more awkward due to its shape. Be careful not to bend the fins. Obviously remove the fan and the mounting mechanism first. Don't be tempted to try and remove the copper base, some have screws there but removing it can screw up the joint between base and heatpipes. A small amount of water or sanding oil is permissable when lapping a HSF as you may find due to its weight it sometimes leads to a jerky sanding motion. Try not to sand too much of the base away, as this can result in reduced contact pressure to the CPU. Sanding too much copper away could require modification of the mounting mechanism or the addition / thinning of washers etc.

The more important question is what was the ambient temperature. I can get a 48c load temp if I open the windows when it's -5c outside.

the 120's have a slightly concave base, on purpose, according to Thermalright. I have no guts to try lapping the CPU. The stress while doing it would kill me. Heck I almost had a heart attack from my MB flipping and landing on the memory. I'm still undecided on lapping. I see lots of people that get no benefit.. but it's rare to see anyone have negative results. I do feel that I should be able to hit 4.2Ghz without my temps going into the low 70's during IBT runs. I'd love to see a BIOS template of grishkafool. His sig says he is running at 500x9... WOW

My ambient is about 72F (22C). My rig is in my finished basement where all of our kids stuff and TV is too.

At the moment I am running at 4.005GHz ~

my 9800GT is overclocked at 666/1665/1066

I have Chrome, Notepad (4 files), FahCPU, FAHGPU, Outlook, Everest, RealTemp, and a host of other background services going.
According to Everest my temps are:

                    Motherboard: 32C
                    CPU: 29C
                    Core 1: 35C
                    Core 2: 35C
                    GPU: 62C
                    HDD: 32C

That extra fan I added really helped out. I did it a few weeks after I lapped my HSF. At idle I saw a 5 - 8C drop and under Prime Load I saw an average of 12C drop.

Quite the opposite actually. The TrUE has a convex base, as many 65nm Conroe CPU's had a concave IHS.

man the 500FSB is sweet. Did you get it to be stable? I'd love to go 500FSB with a 8.5 multiplier.. I'll keep dreaming for now.

Nice increase in RAM speed. Well done mate! Keep going if you can. Do you game? I notice you "only" have a 7000 series card (fine for the occasional frag fest), but you may still notice a performance increase. You would be mostly GPU bottle-necked though.

Quick update on my temperatures. I've now joined the TrUE club, and fitted a TrUE Black.

Prime Large FFT load at 3.9GHz (411*9.5) have gone from 63c to 55c
Small FFT at 3.9GHz (411*9.5) have gone from 60c to 52c
IBT max stress at 3.9GHz has gone from 84c (YIKES!!!!!11ONE) to 70c

                                Cool.
