awesome explanation Psycho101, just to add, lsdmesap has an excellent article of setting some stuffhttp://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/how-...asytune-29746/

My stability test of 525FSB with 1.26 MCH and .68 MCH ref failed @ 8 hours of prime95... Doh!!! So now I am trying .72 MCH ref.. I really don't want to bump my MCH Core to 1.28 if I can avoid it.. since the spec says 1.21 max.. I still have a hard time believing the spec for that.. even Lsdmesap recommended MCH core values are 1.2 to 1.28 I believe.

Intel MCH specs are probably for a maximum of 400 FSB. Maybe they didn't think mor would be needed, as the highest stock FSB is 400MHz on the QX9770. I'd be happy on anythng up to around 1.34V. After that I'd be cautious, and anything 1.4V or over and I'd at least want active cooling, ideally a water block.

:) I wouldn't take that value as set in stone. I've run 1.5v for a little while, and it did nothing for stability. Didn't do the chip any harm either. Best practice is use as little as you can get away with, but if you really want a certain speed, and it needs a higher voltage, use it if you dare.

rofl!! It it does make me feel better running MCH 1.28 to hit 525... I think I am going to set my goal at 8 x 525 = 4.200Ghz or 8.5 x 500 = 4.25Hhz. Well at least until I can get my cooling tweaked a little. My chip is not as good an overclocker as many of the E8400 E0's around here. Not that I would honestly ever notice the difference between 4.2, 4.25 or 4.5 really anyways. Well maybe when we are all running Raid 0 on SSD.
            we would.

              I'm about 3 hours from being 24 hours stable at 500FSB x 8.5 = 4.250Ghz. I'll post my template later if I make it.

ok here's the thing.. it made it around 25 hours (That's a whole 45 minutes longer than needed ) Prim95 small inplace fft's and 7 hours of OCCT and Prime95 at the same time.. And a bunch of UT3 games with Prime95 still going. I had a bunch of windows opened and was doing stuff when I had to run to a DR apt.. when I just now checked prime95 was not running.. so did I kill it??.. or did it die but only it? System seems stable, no issues.. and I've never know Prime95 to completely die with out the machine going down right away... So I'm guessing I did it. Doh! My other apps I had running were still in the same state.. so it dodn't reboot and come back.

The last part of my tests is a reboot.. if the reboot causes a power off and restart then it's not a good overclock. If it reboots without power going off then on, then I'm golden.

I restarted prime95.. and it died after 9 minutes!?!?

are you kidding me?!?!?!!?!? It went at least 25 hours. Probably closer to 27 hours... sigh.... well let's start the next 24+ hour count down...

D-and-W this is all so your fault!! You hurt my rigs feelings!!

Out of curiousity, what version of Prime95 are you using? And is it 32 or 64bit (lots of people use 64bit OS nowadays).

Windows Xp 32 bit, Prime95 version 25.9 build 4.. I really should install and boot up the 64 bit Windows 7, would be a much better test

I haven't carefully read through the whole thread, but just in case someone found it useful, I finally managed to boot at 500FSB JUST by changing memory strap from 2.00D to 2.00B. On rather low voltages. Perhaps worth a shot.
