    Pushin' your luck, ain'tcha!!

Given your current LinX core temperatures, I'd go with a 90MHz increase with your 9X cpu multiplier which will bring you to ~ 3.60GHz where I strongly recommend a 10 - 12 hour or longer HCI Memtest marathon after you first repeat the 5-loop LinX test.

Sound good to you? NO? TOO BAD!!!

That sounds absolutely fine to me :)

Slow and steady wins the stability race!

Do you think a 2 clicks vcore increase will be sufficient (leaving all other settings unchanged)

I'll try leaving the system running overnight if it passes the LinX test before I go to bed.

      • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

Even though your maximum RealTemp cpu core temperatures look good in post #254, RealTemp and HWiNFO both show that the maximum temperatures are currently 30o(C) away from TjMax. For reference, my Q9650 temperatures at 4.0GHz and 4.15GHz are about 35o and 30o(C) away from my TjMax which is 100o(C) when I'm running LinX.

Right now you have RealTemp operating with (i.e. displaying) core temperatures based on TjMax = 85o, while HWiNfo is reporting 15o higher temperatures because it is using the 100o TjMax value. This isn't a problem, it just affects the displayed temperature values that each program displays.
This information is for new readers in this thread.

I've seen many cases where some systems display core temperatures of 80o - 85o(C) without problems when their TjMax value is 100o when running LinX or IBT. I wouldn't want to run my system regularly with temperatures in the 80o - 85o or higher range.

I'm about to start a 10 - 12 hour Prime95 Blend test with my lower and tested 4.005GHz settings.
A final test for me will later run the Prime95 Small FFT test for the same 10 - 12 hour period.

Do as I say AND do as I do, otherwise you will be in deep doodoo.

AAARRG, you snuck in another post.

You'll have to use trial and error to find the correct cpu voltage setting increase that is required with each 90MHz increase. With Q9550 and Q9650 processors, larger cpu voltage increases are often required as you approach or pass 3.80GHz speeds. I think that with your Xeon 771 mod setup that larger increases might start with the move to 3.60GHz settings.

When I was trying to use higher than 460MHz FSB, I went through several bios resets and freezes in windows. In the past I've had a couple of cases where I got a real scare when an o/c failed, "ate" the bios and posted message that said "Searching the hard drive for a copy of the bios." The best way to avoid this is to not let your system eat your bios (DUH) or to have a recent saved copy of your bios in the root directory of a flopsy disk placed in your drive, ready to be quickly pushed into the slot. This is usually only necessary with older bioses that don't have the Backup Bios Image to HDD option enabled in the Advanced Bios Features section in the bios. If I recall correctly, you can't enable this option if your HDD is part of an array and/or if it later becomes part of a raid array..

Well that was a scare - Came home from the gym to a blank screen... pressed a key and the computer awoke from it's slumber. This never happened with high performance power settings... Does that void the test in any way? :/

3.6GHz (9x401), 1.31250 vcore, all other settings unchanged.

Booted into Windows fine, about to run a LinX test.

I remembered to adjust TjMax = 85o in HWiNFO this time too!

It's good to see that you're making progress.

At the end of each successful HCI Memtest session, are you spending at least one hour on your computer running various programs, games, watching videos, listening to music and doing detailed virus scans, etc to ensure that everything is running smoothly?

Another excellent test is to create a very large zip file. You should then check the integrity of the zip file and then unzip the large zip file to new temporary folder. If you get any zip errors during this test this indicates that your system has problems.

On my system the My Documents folder has 23,041 files, and takes up 19.8GB of space. This folder is located in one of my hard drive partitions, and not on my boot drive. Defragmenting one of your hard drive partitions is NOT a good idea unless you are really sure that your system is stable.

I know there was one error but I think that file was a torrent which has been scanned by various antivirus programs over the years so this could be a reason it's corrupt?

I know you said above 3.6GHz would require higher vcore increments so I'm hoping that is what's needed!

I've reverted back to 3.6GHz BIOS settings for now.

I no longer consider HCI Memtest to be a reliable stress testing program!!

See the end of this post for more information.

I am now using Prime95 for stress testing my recent 4.005GHz and 4.050GHz configurations.

You did well with going it alone.
It's possible that increasing (G)MCH OverVoltage Control and/or FSB OverVoltage Control to +0.2 might help.

Your screen-shot shows that your maximum core temperatures are about 25o(C) below your 85o TjMax setting, so overheating shouldn't be a problem. If you were using TjMax = 100o, your maximum core temperatures would be about 75o(C), which isn't great but it is acceptable.

                              If you are determined to o/c to 4.0GHz, your best bet is to switch to a Q9550 cpu with 8.5 x 333 = 2.83GHz or a Q9650 with 9.0 x 333 = 3.0GHz.
A higher end motherboard such as a P35-DS4 or P35-DQ6 (rev: 1.1) will offer better bios tweaking voltage options and offer Load Line Calibration. There are also EP35 Gigabyte models that are virtually the same as the earlier P35 models. If you can find an EP45-UD3P or UD3R model at a reasonable price, that would be even better.

Are any of these higher end boards guaranteed to overclock higher? No, but they probably will.
Will the Q9550 or Q9650 overclock better than your Xeon 771 cpu with your P35-DS3L? Probably.

You can use the forum's Advanced Search feature to search for Q9550 using the Search Titles Only option and you'll see how well others did with their EP45 motherboards.

Check out AnanTech's AnandTech | Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P - P45 at its Finest review for a great read.
AnandTech | Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P - P45 at its Finest, page 6 details their overclocking results with the E8600 and Q9550 processors.
I wouldn't be happy running at their speeds where some of their voltage settings are higher than I'm comfortable with for everyday usage.

Are any of the above upgrades worthwhile? I don't think so, but it's your decision. How fast are you willing to spend?

HCI Memtest is inferior to Prime95 for stress testing.

I posted about several random "program not responding" issues when running IrfanView, a lightweight but excellent image editing program. I suspected that the 1.36875 cpu voltage might be too low and decided to go back to Prime95 to see if it too would pass an extended stress test. On three separate occasions, Prime 95 locked up my system at 45 minutes, 1.5 hours, and finally at 3hours, 54 minutes. There were no worker thread errors in any of these tests.

I increased the cpu vcore voltage to 1.3750 volts and the current Prime95 Blend test has been running for over 6 hours, 20 minutes and is still running strong.

In the not so "good old days" many of us would not consider our overclocked systems stable unless we successfully ran each of the Prime95 tests (Blend, Small FFT and Large FFT) without errors for 24 hours. I've mellowed somewhat and now consider my system to be stable after it runs each of the tests for 8 - 12 hours without errors.

I will continue to post updates about my Q9650 system's overclocking results while Luke goes traveling for a while.

                                Q9650 @ 4.05GHz (9 x 450MHz) Prime95 Blend Stress Test #1

The Prime95 Blend stress test ran for 12 hours and 18 minutes with no errors.

A 12 hour Prime95 Small FFT test has been started and will conclude with a 12 hour Prime95 Large FFT test.

As of now, the cpu core voltage increase from 1.36875 to 1.37500 volts has eliminated the Prime95 Blend test locking up my system.

If I decide to try 4.099GHz (9 x 455MHz) I will have the dubious honor of repeating this series of three 12 hour Prime95 tests.
