    Re: x58A-UD3R Rev2 FB problems

Based on the evidence I have to disagree....this board is very particular...even some of the ram in the compatibility list don't work out of spec. Bios flash releases don't always work. This board wasn't made to support 1600 ram. My manual even says as much. I don't want to push it or OC it just to get to 1600 which is apparently not supported anyway.

I'm setting optimised defaults in bios now. I'll write the main values down and tell you.

But my plan is to use optimal settings....get my ram to 1066 or 1333....wait for a cold boot and hope that it boots

      Re: x58A-UD3R Rev2 FB problems

if it doesnt support 1600mhz but supports an impossible to run 2200mhz ram then i find it very strange, running ram at lower speed just means you need less qpi voltage so thats the key to running it at 1600mhz,you just havnt found the right amount yet

try it at 1333mhz and i wont be suprised if it works

        Re: x58A-UD3R Rev2 FB problems

Ok well I will try that...after I try a cold boot with optimised settings. By the way...these are the default main values for optimised in bios:

        CPU - 2.8 (133x21)
        QPI Clock ratio (auto)
        QPI Link speed 4.8ghz
        Uncore clock ration (auto)
        Uncore freq 2667mhz
        Base Clock control (disabled)
        Bclk freq (133)
        Mem multi SPD (auto)
        Memory 1066
        QPI/vtt - 1.175
        CPU vcore - 1.24375v
        Dram volt - 1.500v

I'll try to cold boot with these settings in a couple of hours. If it cold boots and all seems ok...then I'll settle for these settings

If it still spits at me I'll try to fiddle with the qpi/vtt as you say.

Can I ask you...if I fiddle with qpi/vtt...............do I fiddle with any other values too......or just that value?

          Re: x58A-UD3R Rev2 FB problems

you should just set dram to 1.66
type in mem timings for all 3 channels and set speed using 8x/10x/12x ect to give 1600mhz
          set qpi/vtt voltage yourself
set uncore freq to twice your memory multiplier then add one to it so an 8x mem multi will be 17x uncore and so on

That sounds hard....sounds like trial and error (about setting timings I mean) in the past I set timings by entering numbers... like 9 9 9 24

Anyway....I'll try my things first with the optimised defaults....if it doesn't cold boot... (or even if it does cold boot) I'll try your idea.

            thanks a lot

ps...earlier you said 'try it at 1333 and I wont be surprised if it works'...then in your next post you said to try to set it for 1600.....so which one should I do?

              Re: x58A-UD3R Rev2 FB problems

its only the top four numbers from top to bottom you need to enter and if you select quick it will set timings for all 3 channels, everything you need regarding timings/voltages are printed on the side of the ram module, all advanced memory timings can be left on auto
              type them in like this
              9
              9
              9
              24
              command rate 1T

              thats it

                So what's all this:

type in mem timings for all 3 channels and set speed using 8x/10x/12x ect to give 1600mhz

                Do I set speed by typing 9 9 9 24 (as written on the ram module)..........or by entering some 8x 10x 12x.....?

to change ram speed you use spd and a set of multipliers from 8x to 18x on my board, each one raises the speed of the ram 8x/10x ect

the timing is different to the ram speed

select quick and you only need to enter timings once, expert means you have to type them in 3 times for each stick but both ways will work the same

                    Re: x58A-UD3R Rev2 FB problems

Ok...understood....so it is trial and error setting the speed with the 8x 10x 12x etc? When I change a setting in bios will it give me a forcasted ram value without restarting bios? I mean If I set each ram stick to 8x....then it doesn't give me 1600 (1600 for example) will I have to boot Windows to measure that? Or can I fiddle from within bios until I see 1600?

Also...which one do you want me to try for?

                    1333 or 1600??

                      Re: x58A-UD3R Rev2 FB problems

no its not trial and error, your bclk is at 133 this affects ram speed too to work it out use a calculator,so 133x21 gives you 2793mhz for cpu,to work out your ram speed you times the bclk by the ram multiplier so 133x8x gives you 1066mhz ram speed

i dont know how many ram mutlipliers your board has but for 1600 mhz you have to use a 12x ram multi so 133x12x=1596 ram speed

if you raise bclk to overclock the cpu it affects ram speed choice so say 180x21=3780mhz cpu speed, and 180x8=1440mhz ram speed the next ram multi at 10x and a 180bclk would be 1800mhz ram speed so if you didnt have 1800mhz ram and had 1600mhz ram then you would be forced t run it at 1440mhz speed or alter the cpu bclk

                        Wow...ok...so I will try 12x....1600.....133x21.......

Now where does qpi/vtt come into this?

I'm pretty sure with those values my PC BSOD anytime....not just cold boot.

I really appreciate your help and apologise for my immense dimness. I'm trying to stay focused on the advice...but I have to go to work and do a thousand other things...it's hard to take everything in

its ok youll soon get the hang of it,qpi voltage is for the integrated memory controller which is inside the cpu,the more ram, faster the ram speed and tighter the timings the more qpi/vtt voltage you need to handle it all

for 1600mhz ram the default qpi of 1.175 wont be enough, you need to find a stable setting that will work, anything from 1.3-1.36v

im no expert,i just find it interesting and i try to help if i can,i started off on i7 systems,i3/i5/i7 and the mb's h55/p55/ex58 are all pretty much the same really,i dont know much about amd systems or the older intel ones really

i havnt built many systems to be honest but built this one since i7 first launched and ive seen prices rise alot since then

you will pick it up and learn the nack of tweaking things to get your pc stable, its pretty straight forward once you get used to things

Everything Wazza has told you is correct. Your board will support those memory speeds.

First thing PLEASE post your system specs in you sig so we can see exactly what hardware you are using and a link to the exact ram that you are using.

You may want to have a look at the links mentioned in this post http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...56-1366-a.html

If you ware using a i7-920-975 there is a rule that has to be followed... uncore MUST be 2x +1 or +2 memory multi.... IE if you ware using a 8x memory multi you must use a 16x, 17x, 18x uncore multi. You can use anything higher but higher will require qpi/vtt voltage.

If you encounter BSOD see my sig for error codes and their correction.
