    Re: GA-965P-DS3: system not booting

The memory is Kingston 2GB DDR2 (2x1GB) PC5300 667Mhz CL5 Dual Channel Kit (KVR667D2N5K2⁄2G). Thanks for the tip for getting into the "hidden" part of the bios, I'll look into it. Pity there isn't a handy windows tool for reading your bios (or is there?).

Okay, that trick got me a lot more info but unfortunately still not everything. The BIOS version is F10.

        Re: GA-965P-DS3: system not booting

How come bus speed defaults to 200MHz?
It would be much easier to comment if you had your sys specs in your sugnature.

I have no idea, but if I get a readout with a program hwmonitor or cpuid I get 266.7Mhz (which is the right value I think).

          EDIT:

Duh. I just discovered that the F11 bios version has additional E6420 support. So I guess updating the bios is on the top of the list now! Another thing, perhaps the bus speed is tuned down because of the crashes and boot problems? I read that Gigabyte has something built in to do just that.

Nah the BIOS would never alter default FSB, probably the incompatibility with the processor.

              Re: GA-965P-DS3: system not booting

Ya, likely due to a non compatible BIOS. Please update and start again, latest BIOS is here and is F14 not F11 >>>

Please DO NOT USE @BIOS to flash, use Qflash, here is a guide >>

Be sure to read the guide so you know about loading optimized defaults and other things you may need to change when doing so.

Once you do that, please give us your new settings and we will advise back

                Re: GA-965P-DS3: system not booting

I've read the guide, it seems like something even I could pull off. I'm not sure of these optimized defaults: I understand I have to apply them, but don't I need to save them first? I don't have a RAID setup.

                  Re: GA-965P-DS3: system not booting

Any changes need to be saved to be applied.
At first boot, enter BIOS, Load Optimized defaults, Save and Exit.

                    Re: GA-965P-DS3: system not booting

I got the file 965PDS3.F14 from the zip-file I downloaded from the page you linked to. Now, I assume this is the extracted BIOS file and that the part from the guide about the SFX.EXE file is to be disregarded. Right?

                      Re: GA-965P-DS3: system not booting

Yes, you can just take the extracted bios file and if your motherboard supports Q-Flash, then copy this to a USB stick/Floppy disk, without needing the included flash program exe.
Then enter the bios screen to navigate to or use the END key to enter the QFlash setup (if i remember correctly) and then select the image.

You can also Disable the "Keep DMI Pool" too and then start the flash process.

When you then escape the utility and the PC reboots, re-enter the bios and load up the Optimised Defaults, Save and reboot. Then re-enter the bios to change any specific/custom settings you wish to change.
                      GA-P35C-DS3R Rev2.0 F11 bios, E8200 (@3.0Ghz), OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Reaper 4GB (@1200Mhz), Xonar D1, 8800GTS 512, Corsair HX520 (Single 12volt line, Max 40A), WDC 3200aaks/5000aaks in AHCI mode, Vista 64 Premium.

Okay, this is pretty stupid: the bios recognises the USB stick as a drive (although it thinks it's a floppy and I don't have a floppy disc), but it can't find the file on the stick. I'm clueless.

It is usualy reconized as HD-0 or simething like that, disable floppy in standard BIOS settings.
My board does not recognize it the first cold boot, only after a second warm boot .

Nah, booting 200 times doesn't help. Floppy is disabled.
