Re: Wanting to add 16GB and a pinch of OC to EP45T-DS3R...but much bad voodoo, memory, etc.

Nothing like eating your own dog food. Was too aggressive trying to get 4.20 and had to clear CMOS. Found when I went to recreate 4.05GHz OC profile I coudn't!

Re-eyeballed all my settings and here I'm 99.8% sure it's good. Clearing CMOS I notice at least 2 new settings "DDR Write Leveling" and "DDR Write Training".

Am going to run Prime shortly...if you could glance at my settings and point out mistakes and optimizations...much obliged.

      1. No value of “AUTO” for voltages
      2. If change doesn’t work back it out
      3. Profiles for : stock, faster, fastest, etc.

Re: Wanting to add 16GB and a pinch of OC to EP45T-DS3R...but much bad voodoo, memory, etc.

Running prime with 4.05 OC produces a hang or reboot roughly every hour or two. Prime ran for 2+ hours only failing a single rounding test early on.

I’m in the process of bumping up my voltages and will repost once Prime fails/passes. So far it’s been running for 20m without the first rounding error I saw before Volt changes.

I’m sure a timing # of mine may be off as well. I feel like system is very close at least to 4.05.

While running prime core temps range from 42-50C in kind of an even temp spread.

Will report back once prime does its thing.

Re: Wanting to add 16GB and a pinch of OC to EP45T-DS3R...but much bad voodoo, memory, etc.

Prime ran with no errors (all defaults) for several hours. Until I hear back I won't run at 4.05 as I think voltages are perhaps too high. Will fall back to 3.75 or 3.5 which didn't require any tweaks damn near. This is with 4x4 (16)GB RAM. Temps definitely went up. Two cores hit 58 but generally they were under 50 all for an ave of 44C perhaps.

Re: Wanting to add 16GB and a pinch of OC to EP45T-DS3R...but much bad voodoo, memory, etc.

It looks like you aren't using the bios feature to save or load bios settings.
Check out pages 37 - 38 in your motherboard user manual to read about how to save, load or overwrite up to 8 different bios settings.

Is there a reason why you are running your memory at 1080MHz with the 2.40B memory multiplier instead of using the 3.20B memory multiplier to run your DDR3 memory at 1440MHz with the 450MHz FSB? I'm surprised at how easily you are able to use 16GB of Crucial's 1.35 - 1.50 volt DDR memory.

You might have an easier time if you leave the reference volt settings = AUTO, as there is a relationship between the reference volt settings and two other voltage settings. With high overclocks it is sometimes necessary to tweak these settings.

Sometimes it is necessary to tweak the Cpu Clock Skew setting to get stability. I have this set to 50 ps with my Q9550 at 3.825GHz and 4.012GHz overclocks. There is very little information about how to set this but most of the time when it is needed you might need up to about 250 ps.

My preference is to leave Load Line Calibration disabled.
See Overclocking Intel's New 45nm QX9650: The Rules Have Changed for more information.
You might find that you will have somewhat lower cpu core temperatures with higher Cpu Vcore voltage and LLC disabled.

You might find it useful to run a HWiNFO alternative for Ubuntu to monitor and optionally log sensor values.

Here's a screenshot of my Q9650 and P35-DS4 where I took a SWAG with the Cpu Vcore and it was stable enough for my LinX stress test. Even with my water cooled setup I didn't want to use any Cpu Core voltages noticeably higher than 1.40 volts with LLC (Load Line Calibration) disabled.

Re: Wanting to add 16GB and a pinch of OC to EP45T-DS3R...but much bad voodoo, memory, etc.

Before commenting on your last post wanted to mention "surprise" waiting for me this morning.

Grrr….attempting to boot this morning failed after last night's 3hr clean prime run. Only my 3.75, 3.5 and 3.25 (and stock) profiles could get past post let alone ubuntu.

No other 4GHz profiles worked either. So after futzing around a bit (1hr perhaps) I again try the now-failed 4.05Ghz profile which I posted earlier…and it works. Anything to do with computer being on for an hour or so? Warmed up? Not seeing how something stable enough to boot thru ubuntu, build aosp and 3hrs of prime…would fail to boot the next day.

              ---

I use bios profiles 100%, what makes you think not? I wish there were 10 more!

Is there a reason why you are running your memory at...X? Yes...only value I saw that worked

I will check out your link and 100% like the idea of not having to tweak ANY more settings than necessary. Will try more without having to increase voltage.

A question...when I run memtest and it shows timings for RAM given my profile I booted with, should I be matching the timing #s they show? When I attempted to use their values I couldn't boot.

Just tried 3.2B multiplier again for ram @ 1440 and fails to do post test. Perhaps its related to a value in another setting. Thanks again for help.

Re: Wanting to add 16GB and a pinch of OC to EP45T-DS3R...but much bad voodoo, memory, etc.

Back in the not so good old days when P35 and P45 DDR3 motherboards were current, it was often a challenge to get a system to boot and be stable with stock settings. DDR3 voltage settings often had to be set as high as 1.80 volts and if I recall correctly, MCH Core needed an increase higher than a similar board with ddr2 1066MHz memory. Keep in mind that most ddr3 setups back then only used a 2 x 2GB.

I recommend that you start with only 2 modules installed in the #1 and #3 memory slots and start with MCH Core = 1.22 - 1.26. Keep in mind that if MCH Core is too high or too low your system will not boot. I would start with 1066MHz memory speed using the 2.40B memory multiplier and later see if your memory can run at in the 1333 - 1440MHz range. Leave all of the other bios settings on AUTO for now. See if DRAM Voltage = AUTO works, if not, try 1.50 volts and up to 1.60 volts if necessary. With this minimal setup, if everything works at stock cpu speeds, see if changing to the 4.00B memory multiplier (1333MHz) will pass your stress tests. Use all AUTO settings initially (except for MCH Core) buy first loading Optimized Bios Defaults.
When you post detailed memory information it's best to also include the full memory model number that is on the memory module, e.g. CT3579794

I hate to say it but this type of problem is basically what I was originally expecting.

If you have any Ubuntu programs that will display memory and/or other system settings, post a cropped screenshot.

BTW, Crucial has three 9-9-9-24 Ballistix Sport 4 x 4GB 1600MHz kits rated at 1.50 volts, maybe the only difference is the color of the heat spreader.
Hopefully your memory kit won't have problems running with up to 1.65 volts if needed.

It appears I may not have gotten the best ram from Crucial for this. Still under 45day return period though.

The RAM you point out has far lower timings…my RAM stick doesn’t even publish timings. It is also 1.5v instead of 1.35v as you point out. My RAM has no heat sink/spreader and I think this model does.

I’m running prime overnight right now on my 3.75GHz profile which didn’t require voltage changes. It did my AOSP build in 37m which is only 3m slower than my 4.05GHz profile which is apparently not stable. I can certainly live with this and 16GB RAM and be happy.

If 3.75GHz or 3.5GHz fails on prime I’m going to consider getting the different ram…and keeping current RAM around…just in case.

The best stability will probably be with a single kit that includes 4 memory modules versus using two 2 x 4GB kits or four individual 4GB modules.

Speak with Crucial tech support to find out which of the following full 4 x 4GB kits will be most stable with your motherboard.
Find out what the maximum safe DRAM voltage is for each kit.

My best guess is that the 1.5 volt kits will be best for your EP45T motherboard.

I don't think that lower latency kits will perform noticeably better than the higher latency kits.

Alrighty then. I got 3.75GHz@1112MHz stable with 16GB RAM for 12 hours of prime and an aosp build.

The performance difference between 4.O5GHz and 3.75 isn’t enough for me to want to mess with given task time is thirty something minutes and I gain only 3m on that.

I’m posting NOT this profile but the one for 139OMHz as it also appears stable on prime (2 hrs so far) and is higher speed. If this speed fails I’ll go back to 1112. This is only difference in profile I am posting with. Merely a change in GMCH Freq Latch and System Memory Multiplier.

I will post back with success of 139OMHz…or failure in prime.

Yes I agree that doing mem upgrade to 'better' timings may not yield much at this point.

Following is the 3.75GHz 139OMHz profile:

Re: Wanting to add 16GB and a pinch of OC to EP45T-DS3R...but much bad voodoo, memory, etc.

                          3.75GHz @ 1390 passed 6 hours of prime and it's what I'm using now.

A few questions I still have:

                          1. Folks seem to have had to make voltage changes to run 8GB let alone 16. I seemed to have had 16GB working from boot/stock and even with overclock to 3.75GHz...how could this be? Did I just luck out and get very good RAM or quality of mobo?

                          2. Do any of my numbers appear suspect from above?

                          3. I think earlier you had Qs re: my memory frequency...is this one ok? If there is an issue with it, then what might problems resulting be?

Thanks for all your help, good stuff.

                            A few answers:
                            1. You have got to be the luckiest overclocker I've seen with your 4 x 4GB of memory. Maybe it's karma, yours? mine? both of us? I'm very surprised that your low voltage memory seems to work just fine in your old system.
                            2. I'm bothered by a few of the AUTO voltage settings because the bios over-volts CPU PLL, CPU Termination (aka Vtt) and sometimes MCH Core with high or moderately high overclock settings. More on this shortly.
                            3. Earlier I questioned your 1080MHz memory speed. You should be fine with your current memory speeds. Using the D-memory strap is fine as long as your FSB is 400MHz or higher.

Before you cleared your bios, it sounded like you had problems manually recreating your 4.00GHz settings, that's why I didn't think that you were using saved bios profiles.

I'm including an ET6 (EasyTune 6) screenshot and a detailed screenshot of my 3.825GHz settings. The solo ET6 screenshot shows what can happen with some AUTO settings.
                            • CPU PLL should be 1.60 volts or lower. Usually 1.57 or 1.59 is fine with our EP45 systems.
                            • VTT should be at least 0.05 volts lower than CPU Vcore.
                            • MCH Core seldom needs to be higher than 1.36 volts and it should not exceed 1.40 volts.

note: Cpu Termination was also set to AUTO.
In the above case CPU PLL is way to high and Vtt (Cpu Termination) is higher than it should be.
MCH Core =1.30 is not dangerously high but my system sets it to 1.20 when I have manually set a few voltage settings.
The AUTO setting for my memory was auto set to 2.20 volts which is the maximum allowed for my memory, but my normal memory voltage is 2.00 or 2.10 volts.

I suggest that you run windows 7 in Virtualbox so that you can run ET6, HWiNFO and other programs to check on your voltages, temperatures and settings.
Another option is to run a dual boot system for Ubuntu and windows 7.

I currently have several stable bios profiles in my Q9550 system: optimized 2.83GHz, 3.20GHz, 3.50GHz, 3.825GHz and 4.012GHz.
My 3.825GHz profile is fine for my needs.

When stress testing, I run each of the Prime95 tests (Small FFT, Large FFT and Blend) individually for at least 8 hours to ensure that my system is stable.

note: The Memset SPD information window provides more information than the Cpu-z SPD window.

I realize I didn't state some things correctly.

I have 16GB RAM working on my Q9650 with a 3.75GHz overclock that's stable. I didn't have to change voltages because they've been on AUTO from day one. Perhaps in case where I did set voltage it's higher than required due to presence of 4x4gb strips, not sure.

I actually have a 4.50GHz that's so close to stable it hurts! Memtests for hours, built aosp, fails on prime in minutes with either hang or rounding error. I'm punting on spending more time on it due to my RAM not having published timing #s and ROI at this point.

I'm very happy with the mere 3.75GHz OC as it gets me the performance I want and keeps me within accepted voltages.

I'll double check my BIOS settings for my stable OC @ 3.75 and make sure (again) what I've published in prior post is correct.

Thanks again for all the help, will post remaining results once I've gotten some sleep.

Btw, I'm using xsensors for monitoring voltages in Ubuntu, psensor for core temps.

                                You're welcome.

If your system is at idle in the above screenshot your CPU Vcore "AUTO" setting is probably in the 1.38 - 1.39 volt range and is OK.
While running heavy stress test loads the displayed CPU core voltage will probably be in the 1.29 - 1.30 range.

It looks like your low voltage ram voltage is 1.76 volts which is probably not good with your stable system.
Crucial CT2346398 says: "Desktop modules that operate at speeds up to 1600 MT/s and have a CL11 latency. It is dual voltage and can operate at 1.35V or 1.5V."

note: CL11 = Cas 11 timing. Up to 1.60 volts for your ram is probably safe.

My concern is that with AUTO settings for CPU PLL, Cpu Termination and/or MCH Core, these will probably be overvolted to unsafe levels.
I would NOT run at 4.50GHz unless you have first manually set these three bios settings to safe levels.
