Re: The GIGABYTE Z97X Overclocking Guide
The way I see it, the 4790 is just more protection against a bad seed. you can end up with a 4770 that is worthless above 4.3. with a 4790 you are guaranteed at least 4.4 turbo and probably 4.5 or 4.6 with a low potential one.
Because the voltage between the two is pretty much same. a good 4770 is not going to really get replaced. the 4790 still fails at a point even if kept cool when voltage is too high. I've seen reviewers who are unable to go higher who are still below temp threshold cause of new TIM but it's beside the point at 1.45+
I think 4790k is also a clearer choice for air. because the 4790 doesn't magically lower voltage really, only so much gain over a water cooled 4770 to be had anyways. However, a 4770 on air vs a 4790k on air is probably a bigger gain I'd think because temp threshold is hit earlier, well before voltage.
that's my thought anyways. I hope to get mine on 25th from amazon. I use a beast of an air cooler but none the less, air. I was only able to really push 4770 to 4.3, granted I aimed for all core max load stable under heaviest of tasks. I could PROBABLY push 4.4 for regular use, but it works for me. out of box 4790 will be superior, if I can even go to 4.6 on air I'll be happy.
