Guessing you updated video drivers recently too. That also causes this breakage.
If that's the case, you need to uninstall and reinstall those. Then uninstall and reinstall "Realtek High Definition Audio Driver." You must reboot twice after each uninstall. Realtek sucks at.. well, everything IMNSHO. But I digress slightly - the double reboot is required because the stupid software doesn't clean up properly and can prevent detection of the device.
For almost every single Realtek setup, you must never update the sound driver. Every manufacturer uses a custom baseload even if they don't use custom PCI DevID/VenID (which they often do). The only drivers that will ever work reliably are the ones they provide, which are customized by Realtek. This is especially true for the 889's.
It's not a real high end workstation till it's got four sockets, eight video cards, and takes two thirty amp circuits to run. Yes, I build those kind of systems too.
I have re installed the realtek drivers and booted twice. No sound. I have even uninstalled the driver, installed it again from original gigabyte mobo disc but nothing doing.

Thanks for the link. I have re-installed theis driver to the letter of the instruction still no sound. The sound troubleshooter doesnt detect any problems. I have also run the microsoft fix it and that comes up with new hardware not detected. I havent been able to find a fix.
what motherboard front panel audio plug are you using hdaudio or ac97?
if ac97 you need to look in realtek sound manager and disable front panel jack detection or select ac97 sound or else you wont get anysound if you used a hdaudio block connector then you wont need to do that
also ry downloading the realtek drivers from different sites as they might be corrupted
