Now that my motherboard is fixed again, time to break it! Ive seen some guys run obscenely high QPIs, like well over 4GHz. Is this useful? Seems like its fast enough even at stock. How it is even possible? Just good board? I max out at 3.6, 3.65GHz might work, but with 3.7 just all kinds of weird stuff starts happening. Luckily the F13 BIOS for my EX58-UD5 fixes the QPI slow mode bug so now i have more bclk headroom. Any tips getting to 4.6GHz? :D 4.2 is stable with 1.3125V in BIOS. Not really hit terrible diminishing returns yet. IBT temps 67C. Seems like i hit a wall at 220BCLK even with QPI slow :(

Re: Operation the crap out of my i7-920
How are you able to boot above 215bclk on EX58-UD5. Bclk is limited to pci-e and unless you did a hardware mod to your board it should be limited to 215bclk as pci-e is locked to 102 I believe. This is why they came out with X58A-UDx as the X58A has the hardware mod built in to unlock the bclk and pci-e.
You should not need to use qpi slow mode till you pass 230 bclk which you will never be able to do on that board.
Bclk/mem spd/mem timings/uncore/qpi are all based off qpi/vtt voltage.
Also depends on the cpu how well its IMC is depends how well it will overclock.Main Rig

Re: Operation the crap out of my i7-920
Yes me too.
Are you saying the board shouldnt boot 220BCLK? Ran a good 15 mins of memtest before and now about and hour of youtube. IIRC BIOS allows me to raise PCIE very high, but i worry about SATA. Cant find anything definitive out there.
How NOT to use QPI slow? Why not? Anything above 3.6GHz QPI is really not stable. If it can be, how? I tried even 1.4V QPI/VTT before F13 BIOS, but 210BCLK was still weird. (missing lines in boot, hangs etc.)
now running:
Gonna start with the CPU in the morning.

Re: Operation the crap out of my i7-920
Ok I was wroung on the max bclk for that board and the pci-e mod is needed. see here http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...-max-bclk.html and Gigabyte EX58-UD5/Extreme Discussion Thread - Page 182. But your are at that point now.
What are you using to stress test? How is it now stable, are programs crashing, bsod?
Grab a bios template and please give us a full complete list of your current bios settings. This way we can look over and see what could be wrong.Main Rig

Re: Operation the crap out of my i7-920
Ya, you can run 222-228 probably without the mod, depending on the board, CPU and other hardware, voltages used, and PCI freq used.
But to get above that you have to do the HARD MOD << And it is HARD as those are TINY! Once you do the hard mod you might be able to get more Bclk, but to really surpass 228-230 you need to take the board to colder temps (Phase, Dice, Ln2)
For everyday benchmarking, about the best you can hope for even with the mod is 225-23x, until you go cold. Using a PCI graphics card will help, and a IDE hard drive will also help!
That will relive some resources off the QPI/PICE bus and allow higher PCI freq to be set due to no PCIE devices being used, and SATA hard drives (And onboard LAN) normally tend to drop out at around 120-125
Use SetFSB, because the BIOS PCI setting may not actually be doing anything, you can verify if it is or not with SetFSB. Use ICS9LPRS918BKL Clock Gen
When you are not using QPI Slow mode (IE x36 or above) anything under or around 4GT/s QPI should be fine and stable, once you find the right voltages. I can run 4.2-4.3GT/s QPI stable without needing a mod or QPI Slow mode on these older boards.
It's the high Bclk itself probably causing you issues, not the QPI or uncore speeds.Last edited by Lsdmeasap; 03-05-2012, 11:56 PM.

Ahh ok, well I wasn't sure what he wanted eventually, his post is kind of confusing
@ Maser, do the above mentioned! If you are starting with Fail Safe that is bad, so be sure you load Optimized Defaults, then save/apply/reboot BACK to the BIOS. Once in the BIOS again set your SATA Settings to what you need for windows, and ram voltage or any other important settings to you (But not overclock yet) then save/apply/reboot to windows. Then reboot and get back trying your overclock.
Try these setting changes from your above given ones.
