cool. thanks for the reply, Wazza. :)

I'm now leaning back towards the,
    Mushkin Enhanced Redline 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 999000. (She is tight!)

i prefer set and forget with XMP profile actually. My existing RAM has been so simple to use and therefore I've luved it. (I just select the Profile and then change to custom memory timings and change from 2T to 1T.)

      The,
      Mushkin Enhanced Redline 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 999000 seems way overpriced. but so simple to set-up and very elite.

But the 2000MHz sounds so tempting! And it's $10 less. (But I'm worried it might take to much configuring and testing.)

        Re: 2000MHz or 1600MHz ?

Go for the cheaper ram,its easy to set up speed/timings/voltages yourself, the only problem with the 2000mhz is the difficulty in running it faster than 1600mhz,and being 4gb sticks you won't be able to split(take 6gb out) and run it if you wanted to

yes, I planned on taking the 6GB out. :)

ty Wazza (and everyone) for ur help. Because, I just ordered the...

          YAY!

And with the intent on running them at 1600MHz.

If I decide to try 2000MHz, then it shouldn't be all that difficult. and even much more straight forward than OCing 1600MHz RAM to 2000MHz. (Wat is it i have to do? Add a little QPI voltage? i have no idea wat that is. but i saw it in an article on this RAM. and Acebmxer mentioned QPI voltages too.)

Plus, I haven't bothered to OC my CPU beyond 3.84GHz; and 2000MHz RAM should make doing so much more interesting.

Hey, it would be so nice, if there these module's XMP had a 1600MHz Profile, aye?

Anyone know if there might be?

          Tanks again everyone. Cheers!

            Re: 2000MHz or 1600MHz ?

From time to time, Newegg has offered a 10% discount on all desktop memory.
You need to be a subscriber to their email notices.
When available, the offer will be near the bottom of the email.
            Happy waiting ;)

BTW, your new memory is as ugly as my DDR2 Blacklines are!!

My bad. I didn't notice that the red were 1600 whereas the Black were 2000 (I was thinking they were both 1600). You're correct.

Just set dram voltage to what's printed on the ram,it will be 1.5v or 1.66v,for 12gb @1600mhz I'm using 1.3750v qpi/vtt so you could try that, then for timings select manual then quick and type in the timings on your ram and command rate 1t,if at 3.8ghz you could run your ram at a nice even 1800mhz,I know i used to run mine at that speed but with only 6gb,I havnt tested 12gb @1800mhz so can't say

QPI/VTT is the voltage of the CPU IO/IMC part, the more memory and/or higher memory frequency you use it needs to be increased.

The memory might have 1600 XMP proofile, and if not this can be edited and burnt to it once you find stable settings.

cool. (i wasn't sure if it could have more than the one.) my fingers are crossed.

and i'm definitely into editing and burning stable settings. i never would have thought of doing that. ty, Chike!

The RAM (Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 12GB DDR3 2000 Model 998990) should be delivered by this Friday.

I'm going to have fun tweaking it during the Holidays. (Great excuse anytime I need to get a breather from the relatives, aye?)

In January I'll start a new thread asking for help on how to back-up existing profile(s); and help on how to edit and burn stable ones.

                    Tanks again, Chike!

                    Edit 1:

and thanks for the insight on QPI/VTT. it turned me off when the 1st read it might need increased. but not after reading the 2nd time. because i noticed that all that was needed was an increase of from 1.4v to 1.45v.

                    source
Using the XMP profile, the suggested QPI voltage was 1.40V. But, in my case the memory controller wasn't happy until I gave it 1.45V. Once that issue was patched, the memory ran perfectly stable at stock, operating warm but not hot. The memory would tighten up some, but the CAS latency didn't like to go down to 8 over 1850 MHz, however, 8-9-8-27 was fully stable at 1805 MHz and 9-9-9-24 was stable at 2000 MHz. Overclocking was easy but my i7 920s IMC couldn't keep up, so I had to settle with 2105 MHz which required 1.5375V QPI.
