Gigabyte X58A-UD3R/ I7-930 Overclocking Help

Hello,
I have a Gigabyte X58a-UD3R with I7 930 Processor.
I am currently clocked at 3.8 GHZ and i overclocked it by using a guide on overclockers.com

I need to get past 4.0 GHZ so if some one could give me an advise i would really appreciate it :)

I am using Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler.

just change these

CPU Clock Ratio ................................ [19 ] 21x
Intel(R) Turbo Boost Tech ................. [Disable] enable
CPU Vcore ......................................[1.275] start with 1.3250v
QPI/VTT Voltage 1.150v .................[1.295]start with 1.35000v

try with those if not stable raise cpu and qpi/vtt one click and re-test,keep raising untill stable shouldnt need to go above 1.4v on each,try and stay between 1.3-1.380000v for cpu and qpi/vtt

How did you go? Was it stable with the above changes?

I'm also trying to get mine to 4GHz. I had a few different versions that seems to be fine for up to an hour but then eventually fall over and I can't figure out why.

Any ideas?
Also can anyone tell me. If my RAM is already spec'd at 7-7-7-24 1600Mhz and 1.6V I don't need to up the voltage or raise the timings do I? It should run at this speed/voltage fine unless I want to raise the speed or lower the timings further?

So the above settings. One worker failed in Prime95 after 10minutes.

Setting CR to 1T is actually a slight performance increase rather than a decrease. With all RAM timings the lower the number the faster, apart form frequency of course.

Sometimes one may need to alter timings slightly. the RAM subsystem, especially on I5/i7 is interdependant with the CPU to some extent. For example sometimes you may need to tune settings like Round Trip Latency, or slightly increase tRFC etc. On the whole though, no as long as your RAM is running at or below the rated speed then SPD/XMP (entered manually) timings should work in 99% of cases.

*Note that which RAM multi you use may also effect what timings are needed for the RAM and thet sometimes, auto does get it wrong.

veridian i would try with more qpi/vtt voltage at those timings,or try loosening timings slightly,try with around 1.32v for qpi/vtt,have you tried using 21x cpu multi?

What Bios are you on? Don't try later than F5m, they will make the board unstable, corrupt Windows(Memory Management Error).

I run mine at 4.2, Level 2, vCore 1.325v, QPI/VTT 1.255v, RAM at 1600MHz and 8-8-8--24-1T timings, The rest is set to the values suggested by the Bios(not auto or normal).

Everyone please note, the above BIOS setting suggestions of x21 CPU multi, with turbo enabled, will be 4.4Ghz on a 930 CPU.

If you want to use x21, set that and disable Turbo. You will find it much easier to get your CPU stable, and with less voltages, if you stick with ODD CPU multi values.

If you are a gamer and won't be using very multi threaded programs then disabling Hyper Threading may also allow you to reach a higher clock, reduce heat and power consumption. It's ace in encoding programs, image manipulation etc but can actually DECREASE performance in games, sadly.

OFC if you can get stable with it on, keep it on as the performance drop in games is a matter of maybe 5 FPS or so, on average.

Ya I wasn't sure if everyone was using 930 in this post or not as there was a few different people commenting on using the settings.

So I thought it would be best to point that out. Also, for 920 users, on some if not all the BIOSes you can now disable turbo and enter 21 manually I believe (Could be wrong, but I think it is not setup that way)

yes your correct about the 930.

To use 21x multi set to 21 and disable turbo.

setting 21x multi and turbo enabled will result in 22x multi
