EP45-UD3P Chipset Drivers update, & now black screen. argh

I'm sure this has already been discussed so I apologize, but I'm not finding it after a lot of looking.

I'm on a new build, windows xp was up & running great for the last day & a half.

until... I stuck in the Gigabyte utility disk. I installed everything, but the antivirus, but I'm suspicious the chipset drivers are the hang up. It included the updated chipset drivers, the audio drivers etc..

Now Windows gets to the startup screen & then just hangs, black screen. How do I even start to go about this??

it should work with the cd that came with the board,if not try clr cmos

That was the mistake. Yes you can use the cd to install the drivers that came with the board but it is a BIG NO NO to install ALL the drivers. It will install drivers that windows does not need and will cause problems. If you can boot into safe mode and try and remove all drivers. If you cant get into safemode or cant uninstall the drivers you will have to reinstall everything.

ONLY install the drivers you need nothing more nothing less. You can find all the latest drivers here latest-overclocking-programs-system-info-benchmarking-stability-tools

Yeah, wow... this is starting to worry me.

So I'm going through this process of doing a complete format & reinstall of windows.

Two failed attempts so far. As to why?...
The first two using the (quick) format process. Is that a no-no? Two attempts at a complete format & reinstall have failed so far and leave me at the black screen after the windows xp startup screen.

I have always used quick format. Which XP disk do you have? You need atleast SP2. If you have a XP disk with out any SP or SP1. You will need to slip stream SP2 &/or SP3 and retry installing windows. The other thing what video card are you trying to get working? Make sure under Advanced Bios Features you set Init Display First to PEG if you are using the first PCI-e slot.

Do you see the desktop after XP finishes installing? Or is it after you installed something (gigabyte cd) that you lose video?

Do a fresh install of xp, then install 1 driver at a time and reboot each time it asked you to so your not trying to install 10 things and have windows trying to sort it all out on next reboot.

Still waiting on the regular slow format this time which is taking 2-3 hours on a 1 terabyte drive. Reeeeally hoping something clicks this time.

I am using a slipstreamed SP2 disk, and I'm using an EVGA 9800 GTX PCIE 2.0 video card.
I have had it on PEG2, both times I believe. I was wondering if not being set to PCI would screw things up.

I get to the windows startup screen, but then to black; never as far as the desktop.
Really what I'm concerned with is how the fresh installs have been problematic.
Tried twice on just a windows repair, then two or three times with unsuccessful reformat & fresh installs, which hung or froze somewhere along the way, usually toward the end. That shouldn't happen.

For any driver updates, it's best to go to the manufacturers website.

For audio and LAN go to the Realtek site (requires Internet Explorer to download) and use the HD audio 2.33 driver. Also use the LAN driver that matches the model on your board. For chipset drivers, download directly the .inf package from Intel.

Also if you have the graphics card in the blue slot (recommended) set the Init. First Display option (or similar) to PEG not PEG2, as PEG2 is the orange slot. This might be why you get a black screen. Blue is a native 16x slot and orange is a 16x size slot but with only enough metal pins for 8x speed. It shouldn't really matter what slot is used with a single GPU, but best to use the 16x blue slot as it's the usual install order and avoids problems with poorly programmed drivers, Windows getting confused etc.

If you still get the same issue, first try clearing the CMOS via the jumpers in the corner of the board above the case button pins. After shorting the pins with a screwdriver for 20-30 seconds, load optimised defaults and save and exit before making any BIOS changes. This step is very important. Also make sure to actually format the install drive yourself using the advanced drive options on the window showing availible partitions. A quick format should suffice, but if you have the problem again, do a full format for trouble shooting purposes.

I wasn't deleting the partition when I was reinstalling windows which seemed to be part of the problem.
I was finally able to get in to the point where I could run chkdsk, which I did both before and after my successful windows install.

The strange thing I'm dealing with now is that windows is seemingly working, but I ran another chkdsk anyway. It finishes, and reboots itself only to put up a sky blue screen and starts speeding down this list saying sectors this & that are unreadable.
It's done this twice, and I've interrupted it & it'll boots fine. So far it just seems to keep wanting to a 3hr chkdsk right after I've just completed one. Is it bad to interrupt it in the middle of chkdsk?

As far as drivers, I'm staying far away from anything like that for now, and being very cautious when I do.

If chkdsk is actually repairing a sector or some data and power is discontinued then there could potentially be some corruption caused. If you were meaning just aborting the check by hitting any key before it starts, then that won't cause any harm.

I'm not sure why it wants to keep checking the disk though. Did you definitely format the drive in NTFS and not FAT32? I ask because my brothers Toshiba laptop came with vista 32bit using Fat32. A corrupt driver stopped the system from shutting down cleanly, causing chkdsk to scan at each boot/reboot.

I would definitely recommend you install the Realtek sound drivers as a minimum. You'll have no ill effects from using those, the latest version is 100% stable. Don't install the Network adapter drivers from Windows update though, as they've been known to cause issues. the stock NIC driver is fine. If your issues (apart from the chkdsk one) are all gone, I'd also create a system restore point then try the latest Nvidia Forceware drivers for your card.

id let it run a chkdsk itself i know it takes forever sometimes but it will keep insisting till you let it do it and complete it by itself,best to reboot just before bedtime and let it run thru chkdsk as your sleeping then it wont keep going into it as you boot up
