  • Best way to install CPU into LGA 775 socket

    What is the best way to install a CPU into a LGA 775 socket? I was EXTREMELY careful the other day, but still managed to somehow bend one of those very delicate pins in the socket. I was able to straighten it, but now I am paranoid and feel I need to remove the CPU and check if any pins are bent each time I install it now, which just becomes an endless cycle because when you put the CPU back in, you could just be bending a pin again, and on and on. Please give me some tips on how to lower the CPU most successfully into the socket without pin problems. Also, what about attaching a CPU fan? Should you screw it down tight or will that put too much pressure on the CPU and pins and cause bending/breaking? I have a Zalman 9700 that uses a bracket to attach to with a metal clamp that holds the heatsink to the CPU. Can this be attached too tight? Thanks for the help.

    I am not really sure how you can bend the pins. I am a total noob at building machines: built 3 so far, one 939, one 775, and one 1366, and havnt bend the cpu pins once... Just be extremely careful, line up the correct corners, and "drop" it in. I always hold the actual CPU chip by the edges.

      For the second part of your question, I wouldnt tighten the CPU screws too much, but they should be firm. Attaching the CPU cooler, in my opinion, is the hardest part of the whole build. Go through it nice and slow. Tighten the screws one turn at a time. Top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left. One turn at a time. Remember to apply the thermal paste :)

        I usually just hold the socket 775 cpu by the edge, and make sure the notches of the cpu is aligned with those on the socket of the mobo, and that cpu is parallel with the socket. Lower the cpu till it is just over the socket and then gently release it and it just drops right in. Let the weight of the cpu to enter the socket. No force is needed.

        Sorry I can't help you with the Zalman 9700 as I have not installed that hs before.

        May I ask how you installed the cpu? Just wondering how the pins got bent? You know it may not have been your fault as the pin may have already been bent before you installed it. Did you check the pins before installing?

          Man, I have no idea how the pin got bent. I was SO careful putting the CPU in. I had to take it out as part of debugging another problem, and right away I could see the bent pin. You know, when you do bend pins, you never really know unless an error condition makes you remove the CPU to check. I am pretty sure I checked the socket before inserting the CPU. That's something I would normally do, but maybe I neglected it this time and the socket was already damaged. I will ALWAYS be sure to check in the future though.

            I would think if a pin or some pins were bent, the cpu would not have slid into the socket by itself effortlessly and not sit flush with the socket. I also look at the cpu from the side after dropping the cpu into the socket to see if there are gaps between the cpu and the socket from at least 2 sides. I also give it an ever so gentle wiggle (no downward force) from side to side to make sure that the cpu is fully inserted into the socket before flipping the holding latch over and securing the lever down onto the cpu.

            Be that as it may, I hope it is all resolved and working out for you now my friend.

                Intel only guarantees a limited number of 775 insertions.
                Id have to look it up but its like 30.
                I havent taken my cpu out in about 9 months or so but when I had it new ,I did a lot ,testing paste application+ also pad mods with insulating tape.
                The pins dont center on all the pads exactly in the middle(from little dents in the tape).
                Drop yer cpu in:
                If it doesnt look exactly centred give it a little nudge sideways with something like a broken matchstick (break enough of them and you will get one that splits diagonally along the shaft).Just give it a light little flick and dont press down.

                If the cpu looks centred move the locking plate down gently and see if it is centred on the cpu..If it looks a lot closer to one side than the other ,lift it a little and move it(on the free play in the hinge).
                When its centred lock it down with the lever.

                With a bent pin you were lucky to get it straight again without putting a small s bend in the pin,which would make it shorter.
                Id put it back in or leave it clamped as it is if its working ok now.Putting on a heatsink shouldnt alter anything unless you go overboard on the tightening.
                Once the hs is on and flat and the 4 mounting screws/bolts/nuts are barely tight:
                Gradually tighten the hs in the recommended way.
                Thats usually a diagonal sequence 1-3-4-2 with the nuts/screws being numbered 1,2,3 and 4 in a clockwise rotation from top left .
                Ie nut 1 is top left ,nut 2 is top right ,nut 3 is bottom right and nut 4 is bottom left.

                  I hold them by the edge of either the PCB or the heatspreader and lower them in, no dropping or releasing here
