I agree with what Jim says and check the event log it should show a stop error of some sort and a code.

The Event Log is gone. I cleared it. I'm sure I can recreate the failure and be smart enough to save the detail - although all it said was an unexplained failure causing the shutdown. I was just trying to show you all the stuff I can get on my new 24" 1080P monitor so much for that!

BIOS settings and Cropped Screen Dump to follow.

For now you might loosen these up till you are stable.

        Code:
        Advanced Timing Control [Press Enter]
        tRRD -------------------- 4 ------------ : [ 3] 4
        tWTR -------------------- 4 ------------ : [ 3] 4
        tWR --------------------- 8 -------------: [ 5] 8
        tRFC --------------------68 ------------ : [52] 68
        tRTP -------------------- 4 ------------ : [ 3] 4
        Command Rate (CMD) ------ 0 -------------: [Auto] 2
I would also play with the CPU Reference and MCH Reference voltages at this point.

Say start with the MCH Reference up one notch and test. Is that better or worse? If better you can stop there or try one more notch and test. Is that better or worse? If worse back it down a notch and call it good.

Then move to the CPU Reference and do the came thing. IF it seems like these two aren't doing much try CPU termination voltage using the same approach. If its still not working good try MCH Core voltage using the same approach. Some combination of the four voltages has to work. Just go to play with it.

It took me several weeks ans a lot of testing to get mine correct from 2.83 to 3.9 GHz.

profJim probably has other better thoughts, after all I have only been doing this for about 6 months, and there is no way you can learn it all... I'm a noob lol

        • Re: UD3P and Q9550 Overclock Problems

Just a quick update on the first failure after 2 hours and 55 minutes - I think that was a true Vista failure because I found all kinds of problems in the registry that were probably caused by all the blue screens I was getting. I fixed the registry stuff and re-ran Prime95 with the same settings. This time it ran for 4 hours and 39 minutes and terminated with my old friend the blue screen. Conners, I know I'm being sturborn and won't go back to the memory settings you suggested so I increased the MCH Core voltage one more time to 1.26V. Prime95 is running and if it fails I'll conceed to the slower settings and try again with 1.24V. Is 1.26V getting too high and or how does the MCH Reference voltage fit into this issue?

Well it look as though your making head way Ken. NP on not changing the timings, it is your system.

Conners/profJim (Where are you when I need your second opinion?),
Like I said above I increased the MCH Core to 1.26V and the system ran Prime95 for 6 Hours and 15 Minutes before Vista re-booted itself and posted the infamous 6008 event code. From what I can tell this means Vista detected an unknown power problem. So...before I start playing with the other Voltages is MCH Core @ 1.26V too high and am I just covering up the real problem?

              • Re: UD3P and Q9550 Overclock Problems

What power saving options are you using?
Is your system setup for Standby or Hibernate mode at specified times?
You might want to set Monitor, HDD, Standy and Hibernate to NEVER while testing.

MCH Core - 1.26 or 1.28 is probably OK with your current settings.
I found that these settings work best with higher overclocks on my system, 1.26 was stable, but 1.28 "felt better" (smoother).

Try setting CPU PLL to 1.57.
In an earlier post, Conners suggested looser advanced memory settings. It's possible that your settings are too tight.
My approach is to find the tightest stable memory timings after I've completed my stability tests.

With your current 1.3250 Cpu Vcore, you can try increasing Cpu Termination (VTT) one step at a time and see if this helps with stability, with a maximum VTT = 1.26 or 1.28 volts.

You're making good progress. The devil is in the details.

                • Re: UD3P and Q9550 Overclock Problems

You seem to be trying a lot of different things at once very rapidly.
I dont use the sleep feature,If you want it u may have to stay at the max fsb it will work at.

On the q of memory ,I can get mine to run as high as 1060(its 800mhz rated) using a multiplier and keeping the fsb /cpu speed close to standard.
It wont reach that speed any other way.

What I mean is while you are concentrating on overclocking the cpu hold the memory at the lowest speed possible which will be using a 2:00 multiplier.

The board has a fsb limit. the cpu reference speed of 500 is approximately it for quad 775 intel.

                  fsb=2000mhz
                  cpu=500mhz x multiplier
                  memory =500mhz x multiplier

most quad overclocks you will see can get up to or near 450 cpu ref(1800 fsb) using less than VID.
I was able to run up to mid 400's using 1.1-1.2v cpu core (VID 1.225v)
Above that it seems to need VID v.
Then somewhere around 460-470 cpu voltage seems to start creeping above VID.

For me at 490 fsb I need 1.36v in bios.. that equates(for me ) to 1.32v approx with llc enabled.
500 fsb needs 1.39375 in bios approx 1.365v under load with llc enabled.
510 fsb well its not 100% reliable if its a warm day but cpu v in bios alone needs 1.42v+.

Thats pretty much the outer stable limits for quads on air on the ep-45 ud3 board from any posts you will see here.

Llc enabling does change the intel droop profile, and apparently some 35 chipsets did cause voltage spikes at low loads, with it enabled.
As far as I know it doesnt affect 45 chipsets..either way I need it enabled to run at those speeds.

You can check thru conners old posts again he has loads of different settings templates.. tweaking a bit here n a bit there n testing etc,but since your mem is different you may have to vary things a bit, relax out the timings to Cas 6 even for experimentation?

Just an intermediate update since I know all you guys are waiting for the latest in the Ken429 saga. I gave up a long time ago - at least several days - on the sleep/hibernate issue.

First the bad news - I lowered the Memory Timings per Conners suggestion, I left the MCH Core at 1.26V and I raised the CPU Termination to 1.24V and just for good measure I upped the CPU PLL to 1.57V. Vista rebooted after just over 4 Hours. I'm going backwards! I know too many changes at once but I had to prove to myself that we were very close on 10/6.

I then went back to the higher Memory Timings, lowered the CPU Termination to 1.22V and lowered the CPU PLL to 1.50V - that is where I was on 10/6 when the system ran for 6 Hours and 15 Minutes before Vista rebooted itself. After looking at Conners 3.9GHz settings, one of the major differences was he had the Load Line Calibration ENABLED. So I Enabled it.

The system has been running Prime95 for over 10 Hours. I think the Load Line Calibration is doing what it says it is suppose to do in the Gigabyte manual (Page 48) - Adjusts Vdroop, keeping the CPU Voltage more constant under light and heavy load. So much for all the charts and graphs someone somewhere put together showing it was a bad thing!

What did I do make you guys mad at me? I thought I'd get some feedback on the LLC stuff.

I have learned a lot about disk errors and the "usn journal" which apparently got screwed up in one or more of the blue screen crashes and as best I can tell is unfixable. But I was lucky and had a good Acronis backup from before I started the OC venture. I also learned the Acronis Disk Director - Disk Check and Diskeeper 2008 do not get along very well if Diskeeper is active on the partition being checked by Disk Director.

Which makes me ask the obvious question - has anybody come up with a bootable CD, DVD, USB Flash Drive version of a stress test?

On the sleep/hibernation issue - some progress - it would appear that getting the system stable at 3.9GHz and then going back to 3.825GHz with the 3.9GHz settings (except the FSB) has allowed the system to go into hibernation and recover! It would not do that with the original 3.825GHz settings. However, the elusive sleep still does not work.

LLC I enable it...I to have had to reinstall my OS servral times while learning to OC, it comes with the terrority sometimes I think. I haven't heard of a off disk stress testing software might try a Bing search. No one is mad Ken well not that I know of. I was mad last Sunday but that was because the Cowboys lost...another piss poor played game.

There are live Linux boot CDs, and a Prime95 version for linux that may be one option.
Another may be live windows cd.
Another possible solution can be to save a fresh installed windows partition, restoring it should be faster than reinstalling windows.

Hello again, after a couple of months off I'm back asking more questions. Since the last post I have upgraded the Bios, changed the case to the Lian Li PC P50 and changed the cpu cooling from the Zalman fan to the Corsair H50 self contained water cooling system. The two changes dropped the max cpu temperature under 100% load at 3.91GHz by 12 degrees centigrade. Room temperature was 18 degrees centigrade and the cpu topped out at 46 degrees centigrade. So I thought go for more.... but the system won't go much beyond 3.95GHz or a FSB of 465. Seems like whatever I change it won't run OCCT for more than a minute or so and then I get a core error. It moves from core to core but basically the same problem. I included the 3.8GHz settings for a refresher. I tried various minor changes - cpu termination, cpu PLL, MCHCore and the DRAM voltage based on Prof Jim's comments but it has hit a wall. Is it safe to assume that it is the memory that is at the limit (465*2.4= 1116 runs but 470*2.4=1125 fails) based on the fairly agressive settings I am using at 3.8GHz? Mushkin says this memory tops out at 1125-1130 but at what timings he did not elaborate. If that is true and that is the issue then do I really gain anything in the real world by lowering the memory timings just to gain a few more cpu GHz?

Your 996599 Mushkins might be at their limit.
The best I could do with my E6550 and Mushkins was 1100MHz with my cpu at 458MHz using the 2.40B memory multiplier. I've seen several setups where 1140+MHz was do-able using DDR2 voltage = 2.10 volts. You might need MCH Core voltage = 1.30 or 1.32.

Using 2.00 B or D memory straps, your should be able to increase your cpu speed with your memory running near 1000MHz. I found that primary memory timings set at 5-5-4-12 were stable at these memory speeds.

Check out Conners Q9550 threads for his overclocking settings, trials and tribulations.
I don't recall what his final settings were, but he was able to submit cpuz validation at 4.50GHz.
