  • Vantage score, is ok?

My friend is getting 26000 cpu score in vantage, he has a Q9550 He recently upgraded from a E6750, but he says his computer feels sluggish in general computer tasks. He does have 2 or 3 external hard drives though...Is his score ok? His setup: Gigabyte EP43-UD3L Q9550 2 Gig OCZ 8800GTS 640
    i7 920 D0
    Gigabyte UD4P Bios F9c

Not sure... Is PhysX enabled? Is it OC'd?

Only info I can give you is what's left of my old scores in ORB.....

    x3350 (q9450) @ 3.6 Ghz:
    PhysX off = 14470
    PhysX on = 37840

    q9650 @ 4.275 Ghz
    PhysX on = 42560

Oh, and you can check here as well: http://service.futuremark.com/search/form.action

Thanks for the reply. Nothing is overclocked. I checked there and he got a common score, just wanted to double check here though. I got 42000 cpu score with my 920, was strange he got a much lesser number.

I dont get why he said he is getting 22000 cpu score, when 4ghz Q9550s are getting like 18000.

          Re: Vantage score, is ok?

I'm guessing stock settings with PhysX on.... But hardly anyone posts stock scores, so I don't know how you'll compare.

"when 4ghz Q9550s are getting like 18000": they are running with PhysX Off

              Re: Vantage score, is ok?

Vantage is not a good benchmark to use for comparing CPU performance. Wether or not one has an Nvidia card with PhysX (or a stand alone PhysX card) can greatly exagerate the over all score.

For a true test of CPU muscle use something like SuperPi Mod. I'd estimate that his CPU at stock should complete a 1M calculation in around 25 seconds.

If he has programs installed on his external drives or is mistakenly using them with the Windows swap file or s a Readyboost drive (using a HDD is possible and utterly pointless), that's likely the source of the problem if they're USB. If they're E-SATA it shouldn't make much difference.

Also ask him to make sure he's loaded optimized defaults in the BIOS before altering settings for the first time. Checking RAM timings and speed are correct would also be a good idea. Also making sure core temps are OK will eliminate throttling issues. It can happen with just general computing/office tasks if the HSF isn't secured properly. Finally run Scandisk on the main HDD followed by a good clear out of start up programs (use msconfig to edit what starts, DO NOT use it to disable services) and a defrag should make sure all is optimal.

Interesting, thank you. His temps are fine i think, mid 30s idle. He is using a zalman 9500 cooler. I know it originally wasnt meant for quad core but he is not going to be overclocking.
