    Re: New Build GA-EP45-DS3 + Q9550

I've run my UD3P with my Quad core at 3.2 (not its 3.4Ghz max) with a P4 connector, just fine. You may want to purchase an adapter though. Don't buy the ones that just take the P4 as an input and double the connections from it. The only safe one to use will have an input socket for the P4 connector and two molex (one 12V and 1 ground are taken from each molex plug). These molex sockets should ideally be filled with molex plugs from different leads on the PSU, ie don't use plug 1 and plug 2 from wire 1, use plug 1 from wire 1 and plug 1 from wire 2.

The photo I just took shows the only real safe way to have it hooked up. It's just as good as having a P8 connector when done this way. However as half the |CPU power will be taken from the same rail as the HDD's, make sure you don't have a lot of hard drives, all spinning up at once and maxing the rail. 5 HDD's or less on a 16-24A rail along with half the p8 should be OK, depending on PSU quality.

As for 8GB, I won't promise you it'll work, as each board is different, but they do work well in a UD3P at 8GB, and I believe the board is a little picky (as are most boards actually) about what 8GB configs it's happy with. I'd be 80% sure you'd get them working. I must confess, I've been trying to get a hold of some in the UK, but good DDR2 is like rocking horse sh1t over here now, as everyone seems to be running their stocks down and shifting to DDR3.

If it were me, as you suggested, I'd put the Core 2 Duo in the DS3 and see what you can get from the Quad with your X48. Once you confirm it's indeed an E0 in CPUz, you should be able to set 3.6GHz on stock VID and move up and up from there. I bet you top out at over 4GHz if you tweak it right. Should be on a low ish Vcore too, and nice 'n' cool.

Yeah Im really getting more and more keen On the Idea of Using the X48. Just a question if im only using 1 PCI-E slot do both boards give the same proformance from it.

        Re: New Build GA-EP45-DS3 + Q9550

Yes, in single GFX card mode, performance of the PCIe bus is identical.

As you know, your X48 is double 16x PCIe 2.0 enabled, which is great if you plan on running two 4700 X2's in CrossfireX, as they both need the bandwidth.

Your DS3 will have 16x PCIe when one slot is used (must be the primary slot to get 16x) and two 8x slots when Crossfireing. This is the same with virtually all P45's. I believe there were one or two P35's that came with dual 16x, but they were the exception. 8x lanes are perfectly good for two single GPU cards eg 2 4890's, 4850's or 4770's. I plan on crossfiring when my finances are better and expect to get perfect performance from my 8x/8x bus.

          Re: New Build GA-EP45-DS3 + Q9550

Yeah thats what I though, I will not be using cross fire as Im happy with a single GPU setup at the moment. Do you think the EP45-DS3 will be happy running E8500 @ 400 X 9.5 with DDR2 800? As I already have that corsair ram in my sig system. There is just no heat sinks on the Mosfets or anything really

            Re: New Build GA-EP45-DS3 + Q9550

I reckon it should be more than happy to do that. It's got the QX9770 in its CPU compatibility list, which is a 400 FSB CPU, so it should go without a hitch. There will likely be less options for overclocking, but it shouldn't really handicap you as you have a good solid CPU that won't need much coaxing to get that clock out of it.

Mosfet heat shouldn't be a problem either, especially with such a modest Vcore. If you are a little worried though, there are after market mini individual sinks you can buy. Ldsmeasap linked to some in a post that recently got resurected, and they look impressively solid, and are made of copper. Enzotech MOS-C1 Forged Copper Mosfet Heatsinks - Multi-Pack (10 pcs)

You're going to enjoy tinkering with this CPU, I guarantee it. A 4GHz quad means no more compromise between more cores and more MHz. A Q9550/Q9650 would be my weapon of choice if I had the money, second only to a complete i7 D0 stepping overhaul.

              Re: New Build GA-EP45-DS3 + Q9550

Ok Soooooo I think im going to go with the X48 board for my main machine build as I will be finally going with my RAID 1 dream and as we all know the DS3 does not have RAID. So that has made that decision easy, now to add another 1tb seagate to the shopping cart. This build is gettting more and more expensive. Power supply's are Gigabyte ODIN GT 800Watt and Thermaltake TR2 RX 550Watt.

                Re: New Build GA-EP45-DS3 + Q9550

The gigabyte Odin is by all accounts a sweet PSU. I would use it in your Quad, at least while trying to find its limits. I'm sceptical on the value of being able to adjust the rail voltages, but from the look of the modular connectors and the tell tale sign of the hard wired cables not being sleeved all the way into the PSU I think it's a CWT unit, which is an excellent sign if that's the case. I'm about to read the AnandTech review of it. My curiosity was peaked when I read it in your sig earlier. Hopefully AnandTech have pulled the unit apart, and taken some photo's. The boards inside are usually silk printed with the OEM.

I would use the ODIN on the quad as I know the Thermaltake works fine with my E8500 on the X48 with the 4850 no worries.

I did see that post by LSDMEASAP and that may be a last resort. It think it wil be ok.

Ok Ordered another Seagate ST31000333AS 7200.11 HDD to make my RAID 1 for my new build. About RAID does both HDD have to have the same Firmware? I'll definatly give the G Skill 1066 RAM a try. Hopefully Ill have the bits for the weekend. Hmm with your comment on the ODIN, its a decent PSU and Farking Quiet. The software controlling side of it is Pft. I wouldnt mess with the volts and it was only pure luck that I found out the issue with my first one, when I installed the software as soon as I ran it there was an alarm flashing on the 5v rail because it was like 4v and thats why My HDD was being gay. The replacement goes good. Im sure the hard wired cables have sleaving all the way to the PSU but I will double check when I pull the computers down for a rebuild and shuffle. I did research everything before I by and it got good reviews. Its the ODIN GTso yeah check it out. let me know what you find or give me the link cause I wouldnt mine looking inside the easy way. lol

I found the review at AnandTech AnandTech: Gigabyte's New Odin GT 800W Power Supply And you are right it was made by CWT

                      Re: New Build GA-EP45-DS3 + Q9550

It sounds like a good solid PSU. They found nothing to rave about, either exceptionally good or bad, so as long as it supplies good stable power (and ut does) then I call it good.

As long as the drive model and capacity is the same, you shouldn't have any issues with RAID if the two drives have different firmware. My RAID 0 on my old NForce4 X2 3800+ used two WD2000JS Caviar SE's. One came with the PC and the other was bought from OCUK. The newer one had a more recent firmware and NCQ support, but they worked fine together, never had a problem. I disabled NCQ on the one drive in windows to be sure.

Yeah I read the review. I have also found some information that suggest that the first batch of them were a little poor. Id say that they may have had one of these because the first one I had was like that with the voltage dropping off, but the replacement is sweet. Ill never load it up 100% anyway probabl bearly half? Its going good.

Your right. But Hey Ive been using a Pentium D 950 For the last 3 years with 3gb or ram on 32bit vista so when I make the move to Windows 7 64bit with this quad core it will be screaming in comparision. I have been using the E8500 for my gaming rig. and its screams compared to the D so yeah. Ill see if I can get it to 4ghz take a bunch of screen shots and then back it down to probably 3.6 or something nice and safe.
