  • GA-EX58-UD4P Overclocking

I would love a bit of help as I am having a hell of a time OCing my new system.

I have the Gigabyte UD4P /w newest F8a bios (it seems to fix many sleep issues)
    i7 920 /w Mugen 2 & 2 120mm fans in->out
    Antec 900 case
    3x2gb OCZ OCZ3RPR1866CL9V6GK memory
    1 BFG GTX 285 OCX
    Corsair HX1000 Power Supply
    1 Samsung SH-203N DVDRW
    3x320gb Seagate 7200.10 in raid0

I have tried so many settings that I am ready to drop kick this thing.

I can not even get the memory to run at 1866 /w 1.66v and the timing running 9-9-9-28 at the stock 2.66ghz.

I am a total noob with OCing the i7 although I have always OCed, my last PC was an E8400 OCed to 4ghz with the memory at 10-3-4-4 1T 1:1 on air.

I am aiming at ~3.8-4ghz (with or without turbo) with the memory at 1800-1900 (not sure it can do 2000 without a bump to 1.68-1.7v)

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: GA-EX58-UD4P Overclocking

    This is a superb board.

I like mine alot, so I can help for sure!!

Drop kick it? I have seen that phrase 3 or so times this week, is there a drop kick club on the net now or what? J/K

Hey after seeing your ram speed, I think you are one of the users who I saw say that. Have you PM'd me? If so that is why it looks familiar then

Can you provide me a link to your ram, that model # does not show up anywhere on google or OCZ. Wait, is this is (Maybe you mistyped the model #) >>
    OCZ Technology | Products | Memory | OCZ DDR3 PC3-15000 CL9 Edition Reaper Low-Voltage Triple Channel

See if this helps ya any for 3.8 with ram at 1866, if not we will try to get you going at stock before we try more on a overclock.

If you do not have any progress please report back with the full settings you tried and how it failed. If you get BSOD Screens try to see the 0x00000000 number because that can tell me alot actually for X58 overclocks

Ok here it goes, keep in mind I am using the newest beta bios due to the fixed sleep problems (I left some small notes within the settings):

Also I am using Windows 7 x64 7068 ( I am in windows making this post with the below settings)

I also attached the CPU tweaker info.

          Re: GA-EX58-UD4P Overclocking

I was getting random 124 BSOD stop codes in windows until I upped the QPI/VTT Voltage to 1.50.

I saw that with such a high memory speed that the QPI voltage may need to be between 1.35-1.62 depending on the IMC, I sure hope this is true lol...

Working with the same board, saw your post that F8a fixed your awaking from sleep issues as well. Still waiting for my TRUE heatsink to get here so I can really start cranking it though :)

A question: any reason why your Load Line Calibration is disabled?

Just as a starting point Lsdmeasap suggested it so I figured that I should first follow someone whom has much more experience with this platform.

What do you think about my QPI voltage?? I figure due to the memory speed I am running that the QPI will need to be elevated, but I do not know...

Also my current idle temps are ~35-38c with full load temps rising to ~65-69c I like the mugen 2 thus far. There is one exception with the mugen 2, which is that it covers one memory slot and is very close to the one next to it, causing my reaper memory sink to sit on it lol...

                Re: GA-EX58-UD4P Overclocking

I don't have sense of i7 overclocking yet, but 1.5v QPI seems high to me. I am still scared to change any voltages with my stock cooler on there (44-45C @ idle) though. But that might just be what it takes on your CPU. I know I am getting QPI limited as well higher than 183 BCLK. If I pump up my QPI to 1.275v then I am okay at that setting, but as I said, scared to keep it there with Stock. Problem is we don't know temperatures for the QPI link area of the CPU, only the cores themselves. Makes it scary to pump that voltage too much.

                  Re: GA-EX58-UD4P Overclocking

I think I may RMA the processor and the board. I have tried running it at 2.66/1867 with 1.66vdimm and 1.35qpi and it would not boot unless I pushed the QPI to 1.44+. I also tried 2.66 with anything over 1066 and it needed at the least 1.4qpi to get into windows and run a benchmark without crash. I mean I am either doing something wrong or something is wrong with the parts...

Yes, some CPU's need higher QPI then others at any speed. And to add to that some ram XMP Profiles even come with higher then 1.35-1.4+ Standard QPI Voltage setting, so both your ram and CPU can determine that you may just need higher QPI then someone else.

Did you ever try LESS QPI? I found with 2 CPU's that sometimes less QPI posted better then more at certain Blcks. Also, have you tested x21 multi for your uncore when using the 10 ram multi?

Less QPI and it would either not post at all and just sit there or would go into the bios reboot cycle
                      .
IOH Core I tried 1.2-1.24 no change. (since I do not know what all of the safe values for the setting are I have not moved from your earlier suggested values... yet)

I will try the Dram and 21x multi asap and let you know.

Ahh, just wondered about the QPI less thing.

Well, safe how? Intel safe or overclocker safe?

Could just be your IMC Needs alot to run that ram so high, that or that ram in particular does not get along with your board very well. Could be either or a combo of both. Only way to tell would be if you had a buddy you could borrow different ram from.

How much QPI and MCH do you need to run your ram at 1600 Cas7 or 8?

                          Fellow i7 overclocking newb :)

My specs are in my sig, but so far what I have been doing is underclocking the CPU by forcing 12x multiplier and just testing the limits of my QPI/VTT and Ram. Every voltage is set to "NORMAL" except my QPI/VTT and my DRAM. All power saving features of the CPU are also enabled, including the higher C states.

What I have found is that my OCZ Ram (model number in my sig) will not run at the spec of 7-7-7-24 at 1600Mhz (8x200BCLK) unless QPI is near 1.45v and DRAM is at least 1.68v. Same problem at (10x160BCLK). I could imagine higher ram speeds (1800Mhz+) wanting 1.5v or higher for QPI, which is scary on air cooling IMO but you do have a good air cooler.

I don't want to be running QPI over 1.4v so a bit more twiddling and I found I could run the ram at 8-8-8-24 at 1680Mhz (8x210BCLK) at QPI of 1.3v (testing 1.25v as we speak). I hate to think my RAM timings are whats limiting me, not my CPU/QPI, but it appears to be the case. Maybe I should invest in some better RAM :(

By saying it will not "run" I mean it doesn't pass concurrent Prime95 blend testing and Intel Burn Test for at least 2 hours. I will increase my stability testing to 24 hours once I feel closer to my final settings...

Once I know what my ram/QPI can handle then I will push my CPU multiplier and CPU Vcore voltage up. Of course I doubt it will work perfectly, the residual heat from the cores may require re-tweaking of the QPI voltages but at least I will know why :) Of course this could all be stupid because I am a newb...

                            Re: GA-EX58-UD4P Overclocking

I tried 1600 with 8-8-8-24 timimg (tried 9-9-9-28 with same result) with 1.66vdimm and qpi had to be 1.42 just to post, and 1.48 to run Everest processor benchmarks without 124 BSOD errors.

At 1866 I could not post without QPI at 1.46 ans benchmarks could not run without 1.56-1.58, but ~25% of the time it would still fail with a 124 BSOD error.

Both references above was at 2.66ghz processor speed with turbo enabled.

Just for reference I did RMA the memory, PSU out of desperation, and due to the fact that I can not get it to run even when the processor was not overclocked (I know the IMC was).

I think I may RMA the processor today and see what happens with a replacement, procedded by MB RMA if that does not show results.

Yeah with those numbers you don't appear to be a memory-bound. Post when you have some results with the new processor, though I would think the board would be the more likely candidate.

Also, do you know what batch your CPU is?
