  • Need sli/system help please

    Hi all,

I'm pretty new with building and upgrading my gaming pc. I'm running 2 gts 250's in sli mode and I have an intel i7 cpu. Why are my games skipping frames and shutting down my pc? I'm in the process of upgrading my pc's ram, psu, hdd and adding a 3rd gts 250. I'm in need of advice on how to solve my loss of performance issue and how to set the perfect setting for my system.

    My System(currently):

Os - 64-bit Vista Home Basic v6.0.6002 Service Pack 2

    Mobo - Asus P6T

    Cpu - Intel i7 920 @ 6.66ghz

    Psu - kingwing atx 680watts

Hdd - Hitachi HDP725050GLA360 ATA Device

Dvd drive - Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200A SCSI CDROM DRIVE
    HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CH08LS10 ATA DEVICE

    Ram - (3x2048) Micron ddr3 pc3-10700(667 mhz)

    Gpu's - 2x Evga GTS 250 1GB

Wireless - Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
    802.11n Wireless LAN Card

    System after Upgraded:

    Gpu - Kingwin LZG-1000 LAZER 1000w

HDD - Hitachi HDP725050GLA360 ATA Device
    Barracuda 250gb st3250824as
    Barracuda 500gb st3500413as
    Seagate 250gb external drive

    Ram - (4x4096) Corsair ddr3 pc-12800(1600mhz)

    Gpu - 2x EVGA GTS 250 1GB(Sli)
    1x Palit GTS 250 1GB(Physics)

Is my new setup any good, should I be doing anything else? Can't really afford any new hardware, can you help me with twaeking my setup and reach optimal performance? Also I was wondering if it would be worth it to sell my 3 gts 250's and get 3 gtx 470's, or can we get similar performence with the gts 250's? I thought the directx 11 support was interesting, should not be to excited about directx 11?

    Thanks,

    Justin C.

It's probably because your running 16gb of ram, what qpi/vtt voltage you using? Or imc voltage?

Dx 11 looks great in dirt2,alien vs predator,it might slow your pc down in metro2033 no matter what cards you have, high or mid range

        Re: Need sli/system help please

I haven't installed the 16gbs of corsair vengeance ram yet, but I already have them. Whats qpi/vtt and imc voltage? I noticed in task manager that I'm using 49% physical memory and it shows 1.9gb of ram being used, how is that if i have 6gb of ram installed? You think 1 card isn't working? What could be wrong with 16gbs of ram, won't help my system and make it somewhat future proof? I just got and installed my 1000watt kingwin today. As far gpu goes I wan't to get GTX 580, but I currently don't have the money. How much do you think they will drop the prices?

        thanks,

          Re: Need sli/system help please

the more ram you have the harder it will be to get stable, esp if overclocked hence more qpi/vtt voltage or if asus mb imc voltage you will need, could be virtual or pagefile memory being used? hence it not showing correct amount in use

            Re: Need sli/system help please

Top of the loine cards only really drop in price as retailers clear old stock. The mid/mid-high end market is where the real price wars happen. You may actually be better off buying a lower end Keppler/HD7000 than a 580 at the next major GPU release.

I can't see 16GB becoming a standard requirement for some time. 8GB is only recently gaining major traction as the new standard/Required RAM amount on a new build. It's likely that by the time 16GB is desirable that your i7 System will be looking quite long in the tooth. Also remember that your platform works best with three DIMMS in triple channel. Running four isn't optimal.

If |I were you I'd send the 16GB back for a refund. your current 6GB is plenty for gaming. I'd also not bother with another GTS 250 for PhysX, as there's not much of a need for a seperate PhysX accelerator due to the limited number of PhysX titles out there atm.

If your refund plus the sale of the PhysX card (if you already own it) fetch a decent amount, grab yourself a small 60GB SSD (Sandforce based would be ideal). That will definitely improve the whole experience of using your system in general. FPS will stay the sa,me, but there's nothing like having virtually instant response to program launches, quick boot times stc.
