Re: GFX and 64/32 bit OS

its a widetech v2.2 atx 650w passive pfc.

i wont start looking at them properly until the card has built up some credit, but from what ive learned from profjim it will be a seasonic or corsair up to about 550w.

Re: GFX and 64/32 bit OS

Glad to help out and hear that you're happy with the new graphics card.

            from post #7:
I just did a quick check on Widetech power supplies. From http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/935552, it looks like your psu is a cheap "generic" psu. I've seen a fair number of psu reviews at reputable sites, where the cheapy power supplies:

            * don't put out their "rated" power
            * have poor voltage regulation
            * have high ripple (electrical noise) that is just below or even higher than the specified limits
            * some units burn or explode when they try to provide higher wattage. even when the output is below their "rated" power output
I did some quick price shopping at staticICE - Compare Prices - Australia - Price comparison for gadgets and computer hardware and found the following prices (Australian $) for some Seasonic made power supplies:
            • Antec TP-550 psu: $105 - $140
            • Antec TP-650 psu: $119 - $150
            • Corsair 650-TX psu: $114 - $139 (the newest "V2" models are even better than the older TX models)
            • Seasonic 620 watt psu: $125 - $131 (S12II and M12II models)
            • XFX 650 watt psu: $125 - $165
A 650 watt psu now will "future proof" your system if you want to updrade your system in several years or if you want to run a dual video card CrossfireX setup. A mid-range dual video card system can draw up to 400 watts, total sytem power usage. Your motherboard must support CrossfireX for you to be able to use two video cards.
            • The Corsair CX and VX models are their lowest level power supplies.
            • The Antec TP series are the "True Power" models. Don't buy the older TP models, make sure that you're looking at the "True Power New" models. I have the TP-750 True Power New model.
            • The original XFX models are somewhat better than the newest models. I don't recall if the newest model is still made by Seasonic.

Re: GFX and 64/32 bit OS

Sean, let us know which psu you buy.
FWIW, the Corsair HX models are somewhat better than the TX models, but the HX models cost a bit more.
Not all of their power supplies are made by Seasonic, but you won't go wrong with an HX psu if it's made by someone else.
Bottom line, read the reviews from the "best" psu review sites.

In HardwareSecrets "Articles" section check out Hardware Secrets Power Supply Test Methodology | Hardware Secrets. Near the end of this article, there is a list of some of the best psu review sites.

I'll send you my consulting bill where my fee is based on the number of bytes in my posts plus a mileage/kilometer charge based on how far away you live.
Happy gaming with your new video card.
