  • GFX and 64/32 bit OS

gday guys,if this is the wrong place for this question,my apologies.
my OS is xp pro 32 bit,my last GFX card was a Inno3D 8800gt OC 512mb pci-e.unfortunantly it died.
i then purchased a NVIDIA GEFORCE GT220 GT 220 1GB PCI-E VIDEO CARD, according to a comp tech mate this would be ok.but as it turned out it wouldnt run properly on my machine,so i sent it to him for testing and it ran fine on his win7 64bit machine.

he says he hasnt seen a dedicated 64bit os gfx card before [hasnt worked in the shop for a while]
would this be right that it needs a 64bit os to run properly ?

im in the process of finding another 1gb gfx card to put in...i miss my shootin games......

    regards

You should be able to run with 32- or 64-bit if you download the correct drivers for your operating system.

Go to GeForce.com - Get the Most Out of Your GPU, select "find drivers" and then select the proper GFX series/model and o/s version to download the correct drivers.

My older 7600GT card runs fine under win2k and win7-64bit.
My new MSI N460GTX (1GB) also runs with both operating systems when the "correct" drivers are installed.

What specific problems did you have when running with the new card?

Re: GFX and 64/32 bit OS

      thanks for replying.
the picture was grey, slighty out of focus.i had the latest drivers installed, but couldnt correct the problem.changing settings like gamma, colour, brightness or the monitor colours did nothing.
i was starting to think it might be a power problem but i have a 650w supply.
the specs on the card said it had a 6 pin plug for extra power but in reality the card did not have this.
anyhow it works fine on my mates comp and he now needs one so im looking for another.

Re: GFX and 64/32 bit OS

Depending on your price range, I'd look at a 5770 or GTS 450 on the low end (about $100 - $135 USD).
Up to about $200 USD, look into the 5850/5950 or higher end GTX 460 (1GB) cards.
Any of these cards will blow away a GT220.
Keep in mind that DX11 cards will have enhanced visual effects with current/future DX11 games.

It's possible that your psu might not be functioning correctly. You might need to test with another psu.
What brand/model number is your psu and how old is it?

          widetech v2.2
          atx 650w passive pfc

i used a 256mb gfx card as an interim before i got the 1gb card and everything seemed ok.if i get the same result from the next card i will swap out the power.

i was looking at the 5770 and the gtx460.both very cheap on aust ebay.

Re: GFX and 64/32 bit OS

Keep in mind that there are three GTX 460 models:
            • GTX460 SE
            • GTX460 (768 MB)
            • GTX460 (1 GB)
The higher end 1GB cards have superior cooling setups (lower noise and better cooling) and the top tier cards will o/c to 900 - 920MHz.
With stock settings, the top tier 460's will perform at least 10% better than the lower end 460's. Overclocked performance is close to the GTX470's stock performance.
Check out my http://forums.tweaktown.com/video-ca...g-results.html thread in the Video Card forum.

I've seen a couple of reviews where the top tier GTX460 cards and a 5770 SLI setup have about the same overall gaming performance.

I haven't checked out any of the new (about $250 USD) GTX550Ti reviews yet.

Re: GFX and 64/32 bit OS

I just did a quick check on Widetech power supplies. From http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/935552, it looks like your psu is a cheap "generic" psu. I've seen a fair number of psu reviews at reputable sites, where the cheapy power supplies:
              • don't put out their "rated" power
              • have poor voltage regulation
              • have high ripple (electrical noise) that is just below or even higher than the specified limits
              • some units burn or explode when they try to provide higher wattage. even when the output is below their "rated" power output
In case you haven't guessed, I'm a firm believer in buying highly rated, high quality power supplies.

Re: GFX and 64/32 bit OS

                  Corsair psu: all are good
                  Antec psu: most models
XFX psu: all are currently made by Seasonic
Seasonic: the best!! (Seasonic makes many power supplies for Corsair, Antec, XFX, and others)

Most psu vendors use more than one OEM supplier. Seasonic, CWT, and several others are OEM suppliers.
Some name brand psu vendors have some models that are mediocre at best.

There are quite a few really good units on the market. I won't buy a psu that has less than a 5 year warranty.
You should check the "best" psu review sites to get an idea of which models will give you the best value for your budget.
A good 500 - 550 watt psu is sufficient for a single video card setup.
A good rule of thumb is to buy a psu with about twice the "normal" wattage that your system usually uses.
My current setup generally uses about 150 - 200 watts, unless I'm doing stress testing, or demanding GFX benchmarks.
My Antec TP750 psu (made by Seasonic) was a bit of overkill, but I was able to buy it for $70 (after rebate), and it will easily power two video cards in the future, if needed.

Your old psu will make an excellent paperweight or door stop.
Or you can give it to someone you hate. ;)

**EDIT** HardwareSecrets just reviewed the updated Corsair TX750 V2 psu.
The previous TX750 was a good unit, and the new V2 version is excellent, especially for the $100 (USD) after rebate price.

HardwareSecrets has several excellent articles that deal with buying a psu, and how to confirm that a psu really is rated by the 80 Plus organization.

Re: GFX and 64/32 bit OS

seasonic prices on ebay are not unreasonable.
                    430W = $104aus < 850W = $325aus....both "buy now" prices.
                    corsair start at 650W = $153aus < 1200W = $391aus "buy now"

i will look into it again after i get a new gfx card.

                    thanks again profjim

The 5770 was king of the hill in its price range for quite a while and should be a great gaming card. I think that the 5770 originally sold for $200 (USD) when it first came out. If your motherboard supports Crossfire setups you can upgrade with a second video card for a significant performance boost in the future. With a 5770 Crossfire setup, the performance should be close to or slightly better than the 6850. The only drawback to a single 5770 is that you'll have to use somewhat lower (i.e. medium) gaming settings and "moderate" screen resolutions with modern games.

If you still have similar issues with your new card (gray picture and out of focus), borrow a video cable and see if this solves the problem. Wazza300 is happy with his 5770 in his i7-920/EX58 system. Your new 5770 will be be big step up from your old 8800GT.

Let us know how you like your new 5770.

**EDIT** Don't forget to remove the Nvidia drivers before you install your new 5770.
