  • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

I bought both of my HyperX kits at the same time several years ago.

FWIW, the HyperX serial numbers have no rhyme or reason!

    Cpu-z reports:
    • slot #1 serial number: 29383179, manufacturing date: Week 09/Year 11
    • slot #2 serial number: 2D370C21, manufacturing date: Week 08/Year 11
    • slot #3 serial number: 3237F14B, manufacturing date: Week 08/Year 11
    • slot #4 serial number: 2937C539, manufacturing date: Week 08/Year 11

The only problem with a lifetime warranty now is that they might not have identical replacements if one or more memory modules need to be replaced.

With my 4 kits of OCZ Reaper PC2-8500 memory, the serial numbers for each kit are:
    007270805005889-1 Dimm1
    007270805005889-2 Dimm3

    007271004002512-1 Dimm2

      Alright!

So I guess if I find another set there's hopefully a good chance they will work together :)

I can't wait for my new RAM to arrive!

I just noticed your BlueScreenView post where your system BSOD'd again with bug check code = 0x124.
Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try - Windows 7 Help Forums has useful information.

Let's see how your system does after you've installed your new memory.

I ran LinX five minutes after my 12 hour HCI Memtest completed.

My HWiNFO log shows the following temperatures during the LinX test:

          cpu cores = 60, 59, 65, 63 with the cpu temperature varying from 59 - 63o(C)

              I haven't upgraded RAM before...

Do I need to load lower settings in the BIOS?

              Excitement! :D

P.S. Would you recommend running MemTest 86 first too? I think I ran it for 8 passes with my last RAM before I installed Windows...

You can use your highest stable o/c settings when running Memtest86+.
Your memory's timings are 5-5-5-18 at 1.80 volts.
4-4-4-12 timings at 2.10 - 2.20 volts should also be stable.
If you have any Memtest86+ errors, use either of the above settings with no cpu overclock.

8 full test loops is a good test, but I also run 10 - 15 loops using only test #5 (block moves).
The #5 test loops will probably take less than one hour.

                Enjoy your new memory!

Well just installed the new RAM and left the settings unchanged - system booted fine if not a little quicker! :)

Is it better to see what overclock I can achieve or run 8 passes of MemTest86 followed by 15 loops of test 5?

I would first run the #5 15 loops test, followed by 2 full Memtest86+ loops, as long as you don't mind possibly corrupting your o/s partition.

What is your highest, fully stable overclock speed?

I would start there with 4-4-4-12 memory timings, dram voltage = 2.20 volts and run a shortened HCI Memtest session for 2 - 4 hours.

Then you can shoot for the moon with higher overclocks.

Don't forget to update your PC Specs and your forum signature with your new memory's name and model number.

I don't know what my highest stable overclock is yet... Obviously the 3.9GHz with the old RAM was stable until I turned on EIST and C1E.

Is 2 full loops the same as 2 passes?

I've ran MemTest86 before and not corrupted my partition - is there a high risk of it occurring?

Also, sorry for being confused but should I change the timings before running MemTest86 or stick with the current settings and change them after? (I should pull out the numbered bullet points here as they leave me in no doubt as to what order to do things) lol

                      The current BIOS settings are:

                        2 full loops = 2 passes

It's possible but not common to corrupt files when your system isn't stable, and this includes other drives too.

If you have a very recent full partition backup, it won't take long to restore the partition if it gets corrupted.

Use your 3.90GHz semi-stable bios settings with EIST and C1E enabled to see if your system is stable with your new memory.

Your bios profile shows 5-5-5-18 memory timings with dram voltage = Normal.

You can use these settings if you want, and later switch to 4-4-4-12 timings with dram voltage = 2.20. Using 2.10 volts might be stable.

Ok. Above settings the same but with C1E and EIST enabled. Windows booted fine.

Plan is (correct me if I'm wrong!):

                          1. Run #5 15 loops test, followed by 2 full MemTest86+ tests
                          2. If all is well, adjust timings to 4-4-4-12 timings with dram voltage = 2.20V (2.10V if I'm lucky)
                          3. If all is still well, run HCi MemTest for 2-4 hours to check stability
                          4. Increase FSB slightly and repeat HCi MemTest for longer periods

I do hope this all goes well!

I'd like to see a longer test in step #3, mainly because you've previously had several HCI Memtest failures at 2.5 - 3.5 hours.

You haven't included a brief 5-loop LinX test in your testing program.

Keep in mind that LinX and IBT are extreme tests and your system might be perfectly stable under more moderate operation.

I don't know if your Xeon 771 mod is somehow causing problems with LinX stress testing.

From Google I just checked how to run the #5 test:

                                Run MemTest86+ then press: c, 2, 5, 5, enter, 3, 3, enter

                                Is that correct?

If it is I will go ahead and start with that.
