  • Z87x-oc and boot loop - bad RAM?

    Hi,

I've been having boot loop problems since I bought my Haswell system with the Gigabyte Z87x-OC.

Gigabyte advised me that it may be a PSU problem as I had a Corsair 860 PSU which had known problems and kindly offered to 'fix' the board. As I was too impatient and did not fancy removing motherboard and then waiting and then another reinstall - I purchased a Seasonic 760W PSU. And the same problems.

After some more hair pulling I decided to replace the RAM (Corsair CMY16GX3M2A1866C9B) with a pair of 2GB sticks from my old i7 system (TR3X6G1333C9). My system has booted up every time without the boot loop.

I was hoping if someone could help me with a diagnosis.

    Is it.
    Bad RAM?
Motherboard having problems with newer RAM (XMP etc. Have tried switching this off but the same problem)

    PS.
Please note I did use this RAM when I had my old PSU and the problem still existed.

    Thanks

Re: Z87x-oc and boot loop - bad RAM?

Please complete #1 in my sig so that we here know what else your system is comprised of.

We're talking two 8GB sticks that came together in/as one retail matched kit?

Did you since last posting, ever get it to run at it's rated 1.5v versus the 1.6v you stated in your earlier post/thread?

Have you ran MemTest86+ against the sticks as a pair and individually?
#1 - Please, when seeking help, enter the make and model of ALL parts that your system is comprised of in your Signature, or at least the model #'s in your System Specs, then "Save' it.
____If you are overclocking, underclocking, or undervolting any parts, informing us of this and their values would prove beneficial in helping you.

#2 - Consider your PSU to be the foundation from which all else is built upon. Anything built upon a weak foundation is poorly built.

what bios version are you on? maybe flashing to latest final or beta bios might get the corsair ram working

I was on F6 but have now upgraded to F7b.

        I have 2 8GB sticks.

I have loaded optimized settings and I get the same problem.
I have the ran the sticks as a pair and singles - same problem.

        I have not run memtest86+.

is that ram on the memory qvl list? maybe its worth sending back for another make/model? it should boot fine tbh

tried in second and fourth slot from cpu socket to front of case?

No RAM is not on the QV list. I've ran memtest86+ with both sticks and no problems.

Edit: Switched the 16GB corsair sticks from PC and server. Server had 16GB patriot DDR3 RAM. Will post back if there are any issues.

I'm afraid I am getting the same issues with this RAM - so not a ram problem. The other RAM is working flawlessly in my server.

              I'm lost now. :(

Re: Z87x-oc and boot loop - bad RAM?

                Update:

I've had so many false positives that I'm taking this with a pinch of salt. Firstly all RAM I tried including the old RAM has resulted in boot loops.

Right, so I decided I could not get to the bottom of the boot loop issue and to RMA the board. But thought I'd give it another go before taking out the board.

                Steps:
                1) I unplugged everything and removed all except the cooler/RAM. It boot looped.
                2) So I reset the CMOS - no boot loop.
                3) plugged in the monitor into HDMI motherboard - no boot loop.
                4) plugged the graphics card into the second slot and moved HDMI to graphics card - no boot loop.
                5) plugged in second monitor into DVI port - boot loop straight away. Edit: displayport not DVI
                6) removed second monitor - boot loop.
                7) Loaded optimized settings - no boot loop

I've been running like this now since yesterday and there is no sign of boot loop so far.

Re: Z87x-oc and boot loop - bad RAM?

13.10 drivers - so one version behind.

can it be a driver issue on the graphics card? The drivers are software and run in windows - I'm not even getting that far when it boot loops.

Edit: I meant displayport being the problem not DVI port - thinking something and writing something else. sorry.

Re: Z87x-oc and boot loop - bad RAM?

I now have both monitors working in dual setup.

Both plugged to displayeports. It seems the issue was cable/adapter related.

I had mini-displayport to displayport adapter which I removed and bought 2 new mini-displayport to displayport cables. All is well so far.

Hope this helps anyone having similar issues.
