X58A-UD7 slow bootup times - Solved!!

The PC is a dual boot into Ubuntu /win7 and it loads the Linux boot menu ( grub) and from there you select windows or just let it boot . Sometimes when selecting Windows the Window logo ( the 4 colour squares or whatever you call them ) comes up but it wont continue past that.
Problem was that after listing the achi drives it started to just sit there and wait until the "loading achi" message appeared. Normally it would appear nearly straight away but now it takes a long while and then you know it may or may not boot into windows when selected. Actually changed the drives from achi to ide mode and that seem to make it more reliable and quicker. Still ,the first POST is very slow but after that its reasonable and booting into windows has not been a problem.

Now I can survive on the boot speed but I am worried that a bigger problem may be lurking and this is the first sign. Any suggestions ?

its a combination of 1 SSD and 3 hdd's...

Drivers are up to date but I havent updated the BIOS for a while

Had a funny experience today... it got to the splash screen and just wouldnt boot any further. I had previously connected a samsung s3 phone and had left the usb3/power/whatever you call it plugged into the USB2 socket...... removed that and it booted

Still takes 30 seconds to get past splash screen or the first POST

What are the sata port names that each drive is connected to? List the drive brand/model number and size and the sata port name for each drive.
Is the ssd your boot drive or a cache for your boot hard drive.

I love wasting time like this asking questions when your hardware list is not posted.

funny thing happened to day, had turned the PC off at the power point and swapped the 27" for a 23" monitor ....only things different and the monitor thing is a coincidence but today it was a relatively fast boot.....also the coldest morning of the year :-)

My ASUS X58 board is the slowest posting board I've ever used, but part of that is due to a "feature" that checks the memory, CPU, and I forget what else. But the long POST may be part of the X58 platform.

The "loading AHCI" message is strange, unless that is just what Gigabyte displays when enumerating the drives. Many X58 boards have two SATA chipsets, the main Intel and usually a Marvell "SATA III" (not) chipset, that takes time to POST, and may display its Option ROM messages. Is the SSD on a Marvell chipset? Gigabyte also has their wretched "GSATA" SATA chipset, which no doubt is slow as can be, are you using that if it exists?

If Windows was constantly loading the AHCI or any driver at each boot, that does not seem right. Possibly related to the dual booting with Ubuntu, which I am not familiar with, do the same disk formatting types that works with Windows also work with Ubuntu?

Disabling AHCI slows down SSDs and HDDs too, I would never use IDE mode for any reason. What SATA drivers are you using in Windows?

A slow POST may also be indicating a bad HDD, it takes longer to start up.

well it wont boot now.............. I have removed the 2 hard drives and just have the 2 SSD's left.....

will clear the cmos and just boot with the 2 ssds ... maybe one of the SSD's is causing the trouble but it may be down to what you said

just wonder because one of the HDDs was encrypted would this cause problems , cant see how but

I've had similar issues, but it was SATA cable related... at first I was having GPU issues ,and because of the case the GPU was near the HDD and the SATA cables. as I worked on fixing the GPU issue an HDD issue came up similar to yours... slow boots, I had random crashes (hard locks) and it turned out that I must had messed up a SATA cable... replaced it and everything has been cherry since....

When in the Boot did in hang? before the memory check? before detecting the HDD? and yes a complete Hardware list would help...

I also once saw a tightly sized PSU that was on it's way out the door not spooling up a few HDD... the 5V was present to get the HDD to be seen by the MB, but the 12V was insufficient to spin up the drive....

it's never straight forward.

update: have it working again ..... ubuntu has valuable stuff on it :-)

Basically removed all drives and graphics card and the battery. Have put it all back together with just the 2 SSD's ( one Win7 and the other Ubuntu 12.04 ) and it booted into Windows. Have gone into BIOS and disabled the gsata ports and it posted very nicely next time. Will add the 2 HDD's back in later or maybe just the drive I use for windows files and just use the encrypted linux drive as an external drive when I need it.

Good thing is it made me get my other Ubuntu boot working on the Z77X-UD5H..... basically couldnt get into boot order or BIOS as it was locked up when I tried. Yes, the problem is USB related......removed a couple of logitech USB devices and staight away was able to hit the F12 key and select what I wanted to boot into. Basically every problem I have had with this mobo is USB related.


edit: it is now working better then ever. Is it the G=Sata that slowed it down during boot or was it having an Ubuntu encrypted drive ? Not sure but I aint going to play with it no more .

final update : I will put the death knell on this pc by saying its never run better

It is solid and reliable and quick enough at boot that I don't have to twiddle my thumbs
