  • CPU fan header issue

New build GA-Z77-Ds3H with i3-3225 boxed. Everything worked fine, but sensors said that the CPU fan was running at 0 revs. I took off side cover and sure enough the fan was not moving. It's a four pin fan. I tried setting CPU Fan Speed Control to disabled which should run the fan at full speed. Still no go.

When I move the connector to the Fan1 header, the fan goes, but sure is noisy like the blades are hitting something. I can't see anything, though.

I will probably replace the heatsink and fan. Fortunately it is in a very cool case and the case fans kept the CPU at around 43C.

On the chance that it's a fault with the CPU fan header, is there a way to check?

Ignore the system summary under my signature. It's a different system.

    Re: CPU fan header issue

Test your cpu fan with it connected to the sys_fan3 header that is next to the 24-pin power cable.
Your bios should have options to choose between Smart Fan operation, PWM and Voltage modes.
Your fan should not make noises, with your system off, manually rotate the fan to see if it is contacting any surfaces or if the fan has too much side to side movement. Make sure that the cpu cooler is secured to the motherboard and that the fan cage is secured to the heatsink.
I assume that you are using the stock Intel fan.
