  • New PCIe Card not Recognized on Cold Boot, Works Perfect on Restarts. Why?

Need some help figuring this out. I have a Startech PEXUSB3S400 PCI Express USB 3.0 Card that will not be recognized on cold boots. It is recognized no problem on any restart and works fine until the next cold start. Using the latest driver for the Renesas/NEC uPD720202 chip. MB has the latest FH bios and the latest chipset drivers from the Gigabyte site, v9.1.2.1007.

The Card works perfect in a 32 bit XP machine so I am doubting it is defective. I am getting really tired of having to restart every time I turn the machine on. Anyone have an idea where to start looking for the problem?

    Thanks in advance.

The chipset drivers for gigabytes site for your board are a little old. here is the DL location for the latest intel drivers; https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...lation+Utility

Select your OS and grab and install the latest INF.

Now the other thing I'd check if if on bootup is if you have any devices that may be unknown in the device manager. if you do then it might be the chipset drivers. if it's not there, then its a bios issue no presenting the card to the OS.

What slot do you have it plugged in to?

Re: New PCIe Card not Recognized on Cold Boot, Works Perfect on Restarts. Why?

Which pci-e slots are you using for your video card and usb 3.0 add-in card?
When you do a cold boot, have you checked to see if windows Device Manager shows any errors for your usb 3.0 card?
Have you tried installing the usb 3.0 card in different pci-e slots.

The following notes are from the web page for your motherboard and should also be in your motherboard user manual:
      • (Note 2) For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16_1 slot; if you are installing two PCI Express graphics cards, it is recommended that you install them in the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots.
      • (Note 3) The PCIEX8_1 and PCIEX8_2 slots share bandwidth with the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots respectively. When PCIEX8_1 is populated with an expansion card, the PCIEX16_1 slot will operate at up to x8 mode; when PCIEX8_2 is populated with an expansion card, the PC IEX16_2 slot will operate at up to x8 mode.

Re: New PCIe Card not Recognized on Cold Boot, Works Perfect on Restarts. Why?

Thanks for the replys Jim and Vin.

I downloaded and installed the latest chipset drivers from SD last night and it made no difference. I checked the registry and the new drivers are being used.

The card is in the bottom slot which is labeled PCIeX8_2. I think the card is either an X4 or X8. USB 3.0 PCI Express Card | 4 Independent Port PCIe USB 3.0 Card | StarTech.com

I knew about the slot limitations that Jim posted. It didn't matter in my case since the Video card covers the PCIeX8_1 slot that is not supposed to be used when a video card is in PCIeX16_1 anyway. Thanks for taking the time to research that Jim.

I put the USB card in the bottom slot because the free PCIeX16_2 is right under the video card and the USB card would effectively block the video card fan which faces down, very very tight clearance. The usb card is out of the way on the bottom and I assume the X8 slot should work just fine for it.

Upon a cold boot DM is clear of any warnings or unknown devices. The USB Controller section just doesn't show the new card controllers. Since I have my DM set to be able to show "Hidden Devices" (devices that are no longer installed) when I tick that option the new card controllers do show in the section grayed out as they would if the card was pulled which I think is normal and not a problem in this case.

After a restart the DM controller section shows the new cards controllers as it should and the card works fine until the next cold boot.
Also On cold boot, if go into bios first, card is recognized as in a restart.

Here are some thoughts that someone may have an answer to:
        1. Since the card does work fine on restarts I would think that means the card and the slot it's in are not defective plus the card operates normally in an XP machine.

        2. What is different from the cards point of view between a cold boot and a restart? Does the bios or windows recognize/treat a card different depending on whether it is a cold boot or restart?

        3. Why would a bios not present a card to the OS during a cold boot but do it on restarts?

        4. I flashed to the latest FH bios before installing the card. The only thing I changed from the optimized settings after reflash was turn on AHCI mode, set the memory to XMP profile 1 as recommend by Corsair, set the boot order I wanted and disabled the Marvell 9128 run GSATA controller which operates 2 MB Sata connectors which I am never going to use.

I did not install any raid drivers(Intel RST or the gigabyte sata raid drivers) since I'm not using raid. I have 2 DVD drives hooked to the 2 Gigabyte MB sata connectors operating in IDE mode.

To bad I didn't try the card before flashing to the new bios but it was successfully installed. If the new bios had a problem wouldn't other problems show up besides just a PCIe card recognize problem especially considering the video card is PCIe and works fine?

Edit: A suggestion from another forum--- Quick boot is not enabled, tried 5 sec HDD delay but no cigar. Good Idea to try though.

Re: New PCIe Card not Recognized on Cold Boot, Works Perfect on Restarts. Why?

Are there any usb devices connected to your usb 3.0 add-in card while booting?
Is an internal 15-pin sata power plug connected to your usb 3.0 card?
You have already tried a temporary work around by going into the bios first and immediately rebooting.
One of the main differences between a cold boot and a warm boot is that the CMOS battery gets a quick "wake-up" jolt.

OK, so your system is possessed, time for an exorcism.
          Try the following diagnostic steps:
          1. Disable your usb 3.0 card in Device Manager before shutting down; after your next cold boot, enable the usb 3.0 card in Device Manager.
          2. Replace your CMOS battery with a brand new battery.
          3. Use the windows Event Viewer immediately after booting to see if there are any warning or error messages relating to your usb 3.0 card.
          4. Run System Information --> Hardware and check: Conflicts/Sharing, Forced Hardware, and IRQ Status for any errors or problems immediately after a cold boot.
          5. Let windows Device Manager try to find a better or different driver.
          6. Uninstall your current Startech/Renesas/NEC driver and use Device Manager to find the "best" driver.
          7. Try booting with the usb 3.0 card in each of the x4 (electrical) or higher pci-e slots, including PCIEX16_1 and the slot immediately below it.
          8. Test with a different video card installed in your system.

Hopefully one or more of these steps will help point to the problem.

            Jim.
            A couple quick answers are:
No USB devices connected to the card while booting but I did try that and the results are the same as without.
Tried the 15 pin power attached and not attached, makes no difference.

            1. No Change
            2. No Change
            3. Has this same error every time it starts hot or cold. See if you can figure out the error, even if its not card related(don't think it is) I need to fix it. It is attached.
            4. Nothing Found
            5. " "
            6. " "
            7. Will try
            8. Have no other video card at this time

A quick google search using 0x80041003 error provided a possible fix for the errors from Microsoft Support -- Event ID 10 is logged in the Application log after you install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and these errors probably are not related to your Startech usb 3.0 card problem.
It is unlikely (but possible) that the problem is related to your video card and/or drivers.

Re: New PCIe Card not Recognized on Cold Boot, Works Perfect on Restarts. Why?

Thanks for the info on the errors. I ran the MS fixit from you link and it seems to have worked. It was a problem with sp1 during the original install and supposedly wouldn't have hurt anything but who wants constant error messages. Lots of people must have it since since they made a fixit. I then ran an batch file that cleared the EV of the almost 200 errors so I can easily see new ones.

Well back to the card. I am in the process of doing the dance with the card mfg and gigabyte but that could take a while.

Did a CMOS clear and only changed to AHCI mode before rebooting. No change, same as before

I have one of these cards Welcome to Koutech System Inc. That I could try in the slot to see if it is recognized. It is only a X1 instead of a X4 so I don't know if the test would be valid and or worth it. What say you?

I can't try the X4 card in the PCIEX16_1 or X8_1 slots because the video card won't fit in the PCIEX16_2 slot. That slot has a old PCI slot right below it and the large fan/heatsink hits the PCI slot plastic. Those old slots are not low profile like the PCIe's.

Some have suggested completely re-flashing the bios but I think that would be a waste of time. I already flashed it to the latest bios and it said successful, everything else works fine. I did use @bios instead of Qflash because Qflash won't work with a larger bios size. Now I could reflash the bios with Q now since the bios's would be the same size but I don't think it would be worth the flash risk. What is your opinion??

Another board poster stated this: One thing to keep in mind, drivers only effect Windows. With the exception of some UEFI BIOS, drivers have no effect on the BIOS routine. So forget about all the Windows drivers, they work (on restart).

At this point I'm inclined to agree with him since I have done everything I can think of with the drivers?

It is unlikely (but possible) that the problem is related to your video card and/or drivers.
Have you made any other recent hardware changes to your system?

We need detailed information about ALL OF THE HARDWARE in your system.
This is a new build. At this time only windows update and Avast and a couple small programs are installed. I haven't installed anything else yet because I wanted all the hardware working first. I guess I could cold boot and restart every time but that would be a sad note to a nice new build. <label for="rb_iconid_9"></label> I appreciate every ones help and I'll report what Startech and Gigabyte say about the issue.

Update: A koutech USB 3 card is recognized properly in the slot although it uses a different chip and is a X1 instead of a X4.

Re: New PCIe Card not Recognized on Cold Boot, Works Perfect on Restarts. Why?

Update: Contacted Gigabyte, tech said not a driver or bios problem. He thinks X58A chipset(at least on a Gigabyte board) does not give the X4 card the delay it needs on a cold boot in order to be recognized. A restart does give the needed delay and the card works. A X1 card does get the delay on a cold boot as my testing shows.

So it seems everything is working, the board, card and drivers. It's just this particular X4 USB3 card will not play well with my chipset and board.

                    Here are options we discussed
                    1. Live with the board and restart every time card is needed and or wait till late summer when the 1150 socket boards are out. The price will drop on the 1155 GA-Z77X-UD5H board/processors. Buy one of those and the card may then work or forget the card since the GA-Z77X-UD5H has loads of USB3 ports. Good plan if a person has the cash since it would be an upgrade over what I have now but sad because current board will only get a couple months use. What a waste.

                    2. Give this info to Startech and hope they will develop new firmware for the card that will let it work. Guess we will see how receptive they are to improving their products.

The tech did give me a way to decrease the hassle of restarts. Cold boot and as soon as the first screen appears hit the case reset button thereby saving time waiting for a full start and then restart. Pitiful in this day and age but what is one to do!

Thanks to every one who gave help and suggestions. I will report back after I see what Startech can do.

                      Thanks for the update.
Hopefully Startech will come through with a fix sooner rather than later.
As a temporary work around try using a 10 - 15 second HDD delay, it might work better than your failed 5 second HDD attempt.

If you decide to upgrade to Ivy Bridge later this year you might be better off spending a bit more and going with a Haswell system, as it should natively support six Intel SATA 6Gb/s ports and six Intel USB 3.0 ports. I've seen way too many limitations and issues with Sandy and Ivy bridge systems that use on board controllers from Marvell, ASMedia, Via and others. It looks like Hawell's performance will have a modest increase compared to Ivy Bridge.

                      Btw,
one more thing is that June release Z87 boards will be launched with C1 stepping chipset.
C2 stepping which fixed the USB3.0 problem will be in mass production in mid-August.
(So will be similar situation as with P67 series B2=>B3).
I'll be waiting until late summer or early fall before I go with Haswell.
If the introductory prices don't drop within a reasonable amount of time, I'll wait for the Thanksgiving holiday sale prices.

Not sure it was purchased summer 2011. The Gigabyte tech does not think the board is "defective"

I didn't realize the board/processor he wanted me to upgrade to still had USB/sata 6 issues. What exactly seems to be the problem. I bought the board I have now at the end of it's run, i sure don't want to do that with the 1155. Maybe I should wait for the 1150 but what guarantee is there they will have it fixed on that?

Download and read the mobo user manual for any of the z77 boards and look closely at the specification details. You'll find 2 intel 6gb/s Intel ports along with several (4?) Intel 3Gb/s ports, along with a pair of "mongrel" 6Gb/s ports. Kind of like a raid potpourri! Look at your issue with right now with usb 3.0. Do you really want to spend $50 or $100 or more for each additional HBA controller card again? When you look closely at the specs, you'll find with some boards if you want to enable e-sata ports you sometimes loose the use of one or more sata ports. I won't spend $1000+ for new hardware where I have to play musical chairs with port assignments, it's been this way for too long already. Look at how "crippled" your X58 is when it comes to ports. This isn't just a Gigabyte or ASRock issue, you'll probably find that ASUS and MSI have similar issues. It's usually spelled out in the specs where you often must carefully read the footnotes for the details. The better motherboard review sites sometimes point out the port limitations.

I expect Haswell to perform minimally better than Ivy Bridge, but Haswell will have some additional features that should make it worthwhile. I've already seen some very nice discounts on some the better Z77 motherboards, but I'd rather spend a bit more to get what I want without having to spend much more for add-in controller cards. Go back to the P55 systems and you'll find the same issues. I plan to keep my new system for at least 5 years or longer so I don't mind spending more for a higher end board with a 4770K cpu. Hopefully the NDA (non disclosure agreement) will lift in early June so that the review sites can flood us with detailed Haswell reviews.

Now I need to find a hack that will let my win7 Home Premium O/S run 32GB of memory without spending $100 or more to upgrade win7.

BTW, I never make any major purchases without first reading through the manual(s) thoroughly.
