  • GA-Z77X-UD3h - Cant boot to DVD/CD rom when in Raid mode ???

    Hi Guys,

Having a few teething issues since ditching my Asrock z77 Ext4 board in favour of a Gigabyte z77x-UD3h.

Today I wanted to do a fresh OSD install.

However I cant boot from the Windows 7 x64 DVD as my sata mode is set to Raid (for my x2 Crucial M4's which will be set up in Raid 0)

The DVD rom will only show up in the boot menu when I change it to AHCI mode - however this is no good as obviously I want to install windows in Raid mode.

Am I missing something obvious here ?
With my Asrock board you can still boot to DVD/CD rom even when system is set to Raid mode, I can't beleive its not possible on the Gigabyte as how on earth do Raid users install windows, or even boot with other utitlies (Hiren boot cd, Parted magic)????

    Using bios f19j

Im not really sure what you mean tbh mate.

The sata controller has 3 modes, IDE/AHCI/RAID.

If RAID is selected the DVD/CD rom doens't appear as a device in the boot menu.

Maybe it's an issue with your F19j bios.
One option that might work is if you boot from a bootable win7 x64 usb flash drive connected to one of the usb 2.0 ports in the rear I/O panel.
You might not have the problem if you flash using the latest final bios version from the Gigabyte download site for your motherboard.

          Ok cheers for the info.

I'll try it from a Windows7 Bootable usb, just setting one up now.

There is no usb 2.0 ports on the rear panel of this mobo, its got x6 3.0 ports only !!

Hopefully the win7 bootable usb flash drive will work if it's plugged into a native Intel usb 3.0 port.

              ahh ok its different then

have you tried with the dvd drive on different ports? maybe it will show up? other than that id try an older bios to see if it gets seen in raid mode

                Cheers for the hint.

I swapped it from port 4 to port 5, and when the Windows 7 x64 install cd is in the drive it shows up in the boot list as "UEFI - HL-DL-ST BDDVDDRW GGC-H20L"

However it still wont boot from it, it just goes to the Gigabyte splash logo and sits there and does nothing untill I reset the computer.

If no dvd in the drive, or for example my Parted Magic boot cd, it doesn't show up in boot menu.

Just put this into the too hard bracket and now installed Windows from a usb stick which obviously worked !!!!

Well it certainly took you long enough!!
Glad to hear that you finally got windows installed.
I'm still wondering why you had so much trouble with your DVD when Raid was enabled...

I don't know if you could have:
                  1. Installed win 7 with your DVD using AHCI or IDE mode to a single ssd
                  2. Switched to Raid mode while in windows using the registry "hack"
                  3. Booted back into the bios to install the Raid drivers and created your array without destroying the operating system

Yeah did take a while but sorted it in the end.

Im sure the problem with booting from cd/dvd was to do with the various boot settings for Legacy/UEFI....... although I did try all combinations.

As I said ealier the dvd rom dtive would only show up as a boot drive (in raid mode)when connected to port5 and with the win7 disk inserted.
Other boot cds such as Parted Magic & Hiren Boot cd and it wouldn't show up ever.

Anyway as it froze anyway trying to boot from the Win7 dvd, looks like usb it is then !

Re: GA-Z77X-UD3h - Cant boot to DVD/CD rom when in Raid mode ???

hey there!! just got this board today as well, for a new build. I'm kinda having the same problem, but with HDD/SSD.
                        this board has 4 x intel SATA2 ports and 2 x intel SATA3 ports.

i plugged my SSD into the SATA3 port.
my 2 DVD drives and 2 x 2TB drives into the SATA2 ports.

now the weird issue. IDE/ACHI, i can select any of the above devices, order them in boot priorities of my choosing, and be off with my fresh install.
BUT! when i change the intel SATA to RAID, all the HDD's are gone from the boot options!! o.O
during the posts as the board is booting up, the intel raid bios shows up, i can do ctrl+i and adjust my raid settings (in this case, my 2x2TB in raid1). but when i go into the bios to select my boot priorities, all the hdd's are gone!?!?!? the dvd drives are there. and any usb thumb drives i happen to attach are there. but my SSD and 2 x 2TB HDD are nowhere to be seen.

not realizing the extent of my problem, im able to boot from a windows7 install dvd. boots up into windows install, it sees my ssd, asks for the raid driver, which i have on a usb drive. install goes great. gets to the point where it needs to reboot. now....since none of those drives are there in the boot priority list, i can't boot!

have any of you experienced this issue?!?!!?!

Re: GA-Z77X-UD3h - Cant boot to DVD/CD rom when in Raid mode ???

Every win7 guide I've seen recommends installing the o/s with no other drives connected except for your boot drive and optical drive.
I think that the best approach is to enable Raid in the bios and install win7 with your ssd attached to the lowest numbered Intel Sata3 port, Sata3_0.

After win7 is installed, you can connect both of your 2TB hard drives to the lowest numbered Sata2 ports and follow the instructions for creating a Raid array for your hard drives.

^ Profjim is on the money, and also windows may add system files to drives you don't want involved as a "System Disk"... I had an issue once where the System Boot partition was added to D Drive ???? pulled the drive to put in another system and then my OS wouldn't boot???? then I noticed the 100mb partition on D... that was a bugger... so only have your OS destination drive and Optical drive when doing a fresh install.

and FYI. many RAID controllers do not support optical drives. though many work, don't bank on it working. I usually use the internal eSata ports for the optical drive and I set them as IDE in the bios. it will work every time.

Can you guys state the make/model of the optical drive you are using?

                            Vin

EDIT: just realized that this board doesn't have internal eSata ports.... that blows :(

Vin, wouldn't connecting the optical drive to the Marvell ports get around the possible optical drive issue with Intel Raid mode enabled?
The block diagram in the mobo user manual also shows that the VIA VL800 controller has four usb3.0/2.0 ports.
It sounds like drivers for VIA and/or Marvell might need to be loaded before their ports could be used.

I've seen many references to win7 doing strange things when additional drives are connected during the o/s install.
Thanks for the confirmation about win7's weirdness with other drives connected while installing the operating system.
