• BSOD on Boot - Z77X-UP4 & 590 GTX

For the past week or two I have been trying to resolve issues with getting my Gigabyte 590 GTX to work with my Gigabyte Z77X-UP4 TH motherboard, and could really use some help.

So I have been running a 560ti card fine for the past few months, since I got my motherboard.
Upgraded to a 590 GTX and just cannot get my PC to boot into Windows without getting a BSOD ("0x00000116" and "nvlddmkm.sys").
The only way I can get it to load into windows is if I totally uninstall the drivers for the 590. But as soon as install (or let windows install) any drivers, old or new, and restart, the problem returns.

I tried everything I could with the drivers, installing various different versions, cleaning them out, reinstalling, etc etc.
I then formatted and re-installed windows, many many times. I tried both x86 and x64 versions and corresponding drivers. Nothing fixed the BSOD on startup.

I then removed the card and tried it in an old system, running a 775 ASUS P5B motherboard... and it started up fine, no problems! So I dont think the 590 is at fault.

My power supply is a Corsair HX750 (750W). I have tried using another Corsair TX750 (750W) that my old system run it fine with, and still get the same BSOD. So I dont think its the PSU at fault.

I have unplugged all other PCI card incase there was a conflict. And removed all but one stick of RAM. I have also tried it in a different PCIe slot. Still, didnt solve it.

So that leaves me to believe the motherboard is at fault.
I was running on the latest BIOS (F10b) and have also tried the last "stable" BIOS too (version F9). Since joining the forums I tried 11a, and I am currently on 9b.
I am dissapointed such an expesnive card doesnt seem to work with my motherboard, I thought compatibility would have been checked, especially as both products are Gigabyte :(

Please help! I have raised a ticket with Gigabyte direct, but not recieved much assistance yet. Has anyone else got this combination running? Are there any known issues with the Z77X-UP4 and card compatibility? I'm hoping it could just be a simple driver/BIOS fix, or option change somewhere. After dozens of hours trying to get it to work, I am really at a complete loss!

My system specs are:
Intel i5 3570K
Gigabyte Z77X-UP4TH
16GB Corsair Vengeance
Gigabyte 590 GTX
Corsair 750W PSU
2x 500Gb HDD (RAID)
128GB Cruicial M4 SSD
Xfi Xtreme Music
Windows 7 64Bit Ultimate

Stasio any chance you could pass this on to the bios people? seems to be bios issue to me?

@toothy,have you tried setting peg to gen2 speeds in the bios then install the drivers? just wondered if that has any affect on things

Hi Wazza. I tried gen 2 speed after installing drivers, but will try setting it before installing drivers too. Worth a shot

Re: BSOD on Boot - Z77X-UP4 & 590 GTX

Switch to non OC or other vbios. Your 590 GTX is dual bios.
Check your videocard on other PC.
The problem could be caused by OC or faulty video memory chip.

I have checked my video card works fine in my other system.

How would I go about changing to a different 590 bios? Didn't realise any GPU's had dual BIOS

Sorry, my fault there no "dual bios" at your GIGABYTE - Graphics Card - NVIDIA - PCI Express Solution - GeForce 500 Series - GV-N590D5-3GD-B On 580 soc (2xbios and 1 chip) and there bios 1+1 on dual chip card.
and missed that you tested it..

Also there no update on main page but 2 different version of vbios.

Okay, thank you for looking any trying to help anyway! :)
I believe the difference on those two 590 BIOS's is changes to the voltage regulation to stop the cards frying themselves.
Not something I want to be fiddling with anyway.

Top support from Gigabyte! They have tested a 590GTX with a Z77X-UP4 and sent me a screenshot of the proof. Unfortunately, they encountered no problems. How strange! I will try a fresh install with the exact drivers they have used...

Re: BSOD on Boot - Z77X-UP4 & 590 GTX

Is the bios version that gigabyte used on the MB and GPU the same as yours?

the bios level on the GPU will be noted on a sticked (or printed) in the back of the GPU...

also did they give you any bios settings they may had changed?

with my experience with gigabyte support they were good at proving their HW (in their possession) works, but never tell you how they got there. as everything seems to work on their end... that was just my reality with them.

Re: BSOD on Boot - Z77X-UP4 & 590 GTX

Gigabyte support sent me another screenshot of the card functioning fine with the latest 314.22 drivers.

I may have made some progress: I booted my system via the Intel HD4000 graphics built into my 3570K processor.
I installed the 590 GTX drivers, and discovered if I switched my monitor cable to the 590's DVI output from the motherboard DVI, it would cause the BSOD.
I figured out if I disabled SLI in the Nvidia control panel, forcing the 590 to use only one of it's GPU's, the system seems to run stable!

So potentially, the SLI option is causing my system/Windows to crash. Does this help to identify the problem? Would that mean I had a faulty motherboard maybe?

SLI will only work when you are using two discrete Nvidia cards from the same "family".
You can't run SLI with your GTX 560 Ti and GTX 590.

The 590 GTX is a dual gpu card. I believe it uses SLI technology to run the GPU1 and GPU2 simultaneously.
I am not trying to run my 560ti, with the 590 GTX.
