  • Trouble overclocking i7 3820 on Gigabyte G1.Assassin 2

    I wanted to start off overclocking raising only multiplier to 43 for 4.3 GHz, but even with this my system has stability issues running IBT. Temps aren't an issue here.

    Gigabyte G1.Assassin 2 (F11 BIOS)
    i7 3820
    Noctua NH-D14 SE2011
    Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 2133 16GB (4 x 4GB) 9-11-10-27 @ 1.5V CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 Desktop Memory Model CMT16GX3M4X2133C9 - Newegg.com

    I'm not very familiar overclocking with this platform, but I have overclocked on the LGA 775 before.

    Could someone walk me through this process, or point me in the correct direction? I've found some information myself, but there's not a lot out there for the 3820 and for this board in combination.

    Thanks in advance.
    G1.Assassin 2 (F11)
    i7 3820
    Noctua NH-D14 SE2011
    GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II TOP
    DOMINATOR GT (4x4GB) DDR3 2133 MHz 9-11-10-27 @ 1.5V
    Sandisk Extreme 240GB / Barracuda 1TB
    Win8 Pro x64
    Corsair HX750

    What are your voltage settings? and could you add this system to your Sig or note all the hardware in your configuration?

    Vin
    Main Rig
    OS = Win10-64Bit
    CPU = Ryzen 1700x Overclocked to 4Ghz with custom water-cooling loop
    Mem = 16GB RAM @ 3200Mhz
    MB = Asus ROG C6H
    GPU = Asus 1080Ti ROG Strix
    HD = 512GB M.2 Samsung 960 Pro
    PSU = EVGA SuperNOVA 1300w
    Case = Cooler Master HAF-X 945

    HTPC / Home Server
    OS = Win7 64Bit running XBMC HTPC Front end with Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine with 12GB ram assigned for homer server
    CPU = i7-980X @ 3.5Ghz CoolerMasster Hyper 212 Evo
    Mem = 24GB RAM
    MB = Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 v1.0 with F6 Bios
    GPU = EVGA nVidia GT210
    HD = 2x PNY 120GB Raid 0 (OS)
    Storage = 8TB WD Black Storage
    PSU = Corsair TX750
    Case = Define R5

      Auto sets it to 1.320V in BIOS.
      Gets VDROPPED to 1.284V while in Windows.
      VDROOP under moderate load: 1.272V
      VDROOP under VERY HIGH stress level in IBT: 1.260V (This seems to be too low, I've done some testing between now and then, and it seems like it need more like 1.28ish volts or more under VERY HIGH stress to maintain stability.)

      Is this normal?

      Can the Turbo Boost power settings be affecting these volts? The Turbo Power Limit/Core Current, that is.

      Another anomaly I've noticed is that when overclocking, it seems the correct speed under task manager isn't recorded, it's sometimes higher than what my OC is set to; CPU-Z detects proper speed, though.

      Also, when overclocking, it seems like it doesn't want to step down in speed/multiplier, even with speedstep/power states active. I take it this is common?

      Thanks.

        Don't use Auto Settings for voltages, set them to Normal, and when overclocking normal may not be enough, every CPU is different.. some will work and some are pigs.

        what power supply are you using?

          I agree with Vin on the auto settings, is there neway you can post your relevent bios settings?

          1) Can you post a bios template? Don't even know if one exists!
          2) Does that board have a UEFI bios?
          3) Do you OC by multiplier, block, or both tell me how?
          4) How do you set up your memory? Meaning just that...

          I ask these cause I don't know your system or how it's overclocked. But I bet we can get it done with the right information.

            Vinster: Corsair HX750

            ibConners:
            1.) Sure, just give me a little time
            2.) Yes
            3.) I've only done OCing via multiplier thus far.
            4.) I'm using the XMP profile, but making a small manual adjustment as one of the values on auto/XMP isn't using the stick's proper timing.

            I'll try to give you guys a template via screenshots. I notice there is an option to take screenshots but I'm curious as to where it saves them by default, let me play around with this and get back to you.

            EDIT: How's this? This is pretty much all default/auto except for a few changes to some settings, such as RAM timings. Just throwing this out there as a baseline, hope I formatted this in an acceptable manor.

            (Sorry about compression quality on these)

              This might prove helpful if you haven't sorted it out yet
              ***Sandy Bridge E Overclocking Guide*** Walk through, Explanations, and Support for all X79 Overclockers

              For me though, I managed to run my 3930k at 4.7Ghz just by changing 3 things. Set the Multiplier to 47, using DVID to change the CPU voltage mine is set to +0.08 and increase the IMC voltage to 1.10. Everything else is at Auto. When I started to change other settings then things became unstable.
