  • z77X-UD4h wont support 670 gtx in pcie v3 x16 slot. only working in x8 slot.[SOLVED]

    I just built a system based on a ga-z77x-ud4h and a i5 3570k.

Everything is at stock and bios defaults. I'm running the f1 bios.

My gtx 670 works fine in the x8 PCIE slot (the middle x16 slot that is wired for x8 only)

However it doesn't work in the top x16 slot.

I see the bios screen come up. I see the blue windows logo.

Then the screen goes dark, and eventually I get periodic screen flashes. I also see the keyboard light flash in time.

The hard drive shows activity and I am guessing the computer is actually running based on activity and system logs.

Any ideas? I can still RMA the board to newegg but I hope I don't have to do this.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE!

if you plug your monitor to the on-board video port do you see anything? if so, then re-boot and go in to your bios and I select PEG as your video device and not Onboard or PCI (whatever the default it)

my quick guess is it's referencing the onboard and windows isn't enabling the GTX670's output.

funny how it doesn't do the same for the 8x port. but that's where I would start.

      Thanks for the reply Vin,

I tried that as well. No luck.

I also tried playing with the PCI lane assignments in one of the bios settings. That didnt seem to have an effect either.

I even re-flashed the bios with a download version on the off chance that something was different. Didn't think it would help but wanted to try everything I could think of.

Guessing that the auto setting was likely working as I saw the post screen come up but that was the first thing I tried. And I tried it on another monitor just in case I had something odd going on there as well.

I need to try hooking up a monitor to both the 670 and the internal and see if that does anything.
It's funny, if the POST screen is coming up and windows is booting, I would assume everything is working in hardware and that it's just some level of negotiation in software that isn't working.

I'll try any suggestions and get back tonight with the results.
At least if it's working we'll have something to document for the next guy. :)

it was worth a mention, I don't have any of the new gear, so past issues of things I've see/experienced is all I can offer.

Hope someone here can offer any other suggestions.

Double check that your video card is fully seated in the x16 pci-e 3.0 video slot.
Check with the video card manufacturer's tech support to see if this is a known issue.

This is a common problem in the ASRock forum and the most common fix is an updated motherboard bios.
Some had success with a different brand or model video card.

Thanks for fixing the title. I tried but did not have the option.

I'm assuming an updated bios is likely the case as well. As of yet there is no updated bios from Gigabyte and the beta bios listed don't show anything to address the issue. The board only had 1 review when I bought from newegg. It's only got a few now. I'm guessing based on everything it's only been on sale for a month or three.

I'm pretty well stuck with the card I have. Its going on a year old now. Ive not had any chance to experiment further as work is greatly interfering with life.

It's a great mobo otherwise and I really hate the idea of swapping for another or worse having to change manufacturers.

Thanks Vin and ProfJim for the replies.

Remove your motherboard from the computer case, and set the motherboard on a cardboard box beside the case.
Do not put an anti-static bag under the motherboard; the bag is electrically conductive on the outside of the bag.
You need to try booting into the bios using a minimal hardware setup.
Disconnect everything that is not needed for booting into the bios; drives, add-in cards and only install one memory module.
If possible, use a PS/2 keyboard and don't use any wireless devices.

In one ASRock thread with a similar problem, the OP tried booting with his pci-e 3.0 video card in each x16 physical slot.
He reported that his video card finally worked in the proper 3.0 slot after he tried all of the other possible slots.
              It's worth a shot!

I've had problems with another gigabyte motherboard and graphics cards. I leave the link to my thread:

Finally send the gtx 690 and the motherboard to the store, and sent me a new one. But this time, it was a ASUS MAXIMUS V EXTREME. The result is that now I have no problem.
Either I've been unlucky and I have touched two-UP7 Z77x damaged, or the motherboard has serious compatibility issues.
