  • Z68AP-D3 (2.0) reboots during windows install

    Hello,
Built a new system and experiencing random reboots during installation of windows 8. Tried Win xp and win 7 as well on different drives and same thing happens. The reboot seems to occur at the same point in the installation. All these versions of windows were purchased.

Summary of tests carried out so far. During all the tests it still rebooted
Setup is on a workbench not in a case and there are no connections to the power, reset header.(i short out power button pins to start)
Tried 3 different SATA harddrives, and tried different SATA ports
Replaced power supply with 750 watt PS
Tried every memory port with one stick of Ram.
Run 4 hour memtest on both memory ,checked out OK.
Removed video card and ran onboard graphics with HDMI.
Flashed bios to version FD, ran optimized defaults.
Tried installing from USB and CD.
    Tried XMP profile1.
    Removed USB mouse
Tried keyboard in USB and PS2 ports
Reseated CPU and applied new thermal paste, (running with stock cooler)
    Bios reported 38 - 45 temp.

Only odd thing is i removed a harddrive from a working PC that has WinXP installed and tried on the new build then booted into safe mode and it worked. left it over 4 hours and there were no reboots.
Thanks for any help with this.

Re: Z68AP-D3 (2.0) reboots during windows install

When during the installation does it re-boot/fail?

I had Win7 fail the installation on me during the "Updates" portion there you see the 5 steps of installation. My cause was a faulty motherboard.

it would pass memtest for 24hrs and I was able to install uBuntu without any issues... but XP and Win7 would not install

Re: Z68AP-D3 (2.0) reboots during windows install

On windows 7 install it gets past the updates, finishes installation continues the normal reboot to the enter PC name screen, then reboots again normally gets to the "configuring for first use screen" at this screen it reboots and comes back to the enter pc name screen.
Win XP installation gets to the "installing services" then reboots.
Windows 8 installation all i see is the windows logo then under the logo there is a 'rotating circle of dots' then reboots.

I've had that happen with 2 (count 'em) ASR FM2A85X extreme6 boards. The last one had a bad DIMM socket as well.
If it happens on the 3rd I'm going for a refund.
Wish I could help but I gotta agree w/Vinster on this one.

          Thanks for the replys,
Just tried 2 new 2x2gb OCZ Ram modules and get the same results.Talked to Gigabyte support and they said replace the DVD drive and power supply. The DVD SATA drive is new.Tried a different drive and power supply Still the same. Could this be a bad CPU, not sure what else to try.

Intel has a test util on their site. It wouldn't hurt trying it . Of course you could pull the DVD & test it on a working system.
I also got a neat little device that tests voltage output for every type of on your psu. I got one on eBay for I think $17. I have a feeling it doesn't test it under load though.

It tastes like a bad board to me though.

DVD works on another system Monitored 12V supply with multimeter and it was stable at 11.95v when it went into reboot. MB is looking like the problem, will try and return under warranty to Gigabyte.

that's just a voltage meter, if the PSU doesn't have the current to backup what is required your're still toast and that display would not give you a clue unfortunately.

but from the first post you tried installing from a USB and tried a different PSU... I'd try a different board... if you think it may be a CPU and have a spare of anything you could try it... but I'm sticking with the board.

I've always seen a 12 v rail at a little better than 12 v. Then you have your 5 & 3.3v all normally read a little higher. I'm not familiar w your board but I think you should be able to get a voltage reading when you're in BIOS UEFI setup.
