  • x58 UD3r i7 950 overclocking issues

I am trying to get past 4ghz.
    My system specs
i7 950 with corsair h100 cooling push pull swiftech helix's
    gigabyte UD3R x58
corsair xms3 triple channel 6gb total
MSI Gtx 560 Ti Sli video cards
    seasonic x 750 power supply
    crucial m4 ssd

    I am running the following
    frequency 180 x 23
    vcore set to 1.35
vtt/qpi set to 1.31 but I have tried from 1.31 to 1.37 with no increase in stablity
    dram voltage set to 1.66
memory set to "standard" and it was at 1400 ish mhz i believe 10 spd.

I have set the uncore and qpi link speed to right stuff, x36 for uncore and qpi was half of it.
all power savers off, and hyper threading off

I have tried other frequencys as well like 21x200

Right now it won't pass a single test of LinX, it basically just does one pass and tells me theres an error.

      Re: x58 UD3r i7 950 overclocking issues

I have tried with vcore up to 1.37. I really don't think it should need more.

I also just tried to run linX at bios default.. everything @ stock and linx failed at the first pass again. I think I have a RAM issue but I'm not sure. Last week I know for a fact I had passed linX for 10 passes which is pretty weird that now it won't.

        Re: x58 UD3r i7 950 overclocking issues

make sure you have the latest linx and sp1 for windows so it supports avx

that could be why its constantly failing, ill give you some settings to try later when i have time, try leaving mb battery out for 30mins then load optimised defaults in the bios and re enter your oc settings

I tried using intelburntest this time and as far as I know my windows 7 is up to date.

I was researching and another forum mentioned testing my ram. I ran HCI memtest and had a few errors and wasn't even fully through the test. I am thinking it could be a ram related issue?

test with memtest86,if you were getting errors it could either be not enough qpi/vtt voltage, dram voltage or the memory itself is faulty

even at stock you might need more qpi/vtt,i had a chip that needed 1.36v qpi at stock clocks, try with 1.55v dram voltage i think that memory's rated for 1.5 or 1.55v?and try with 1.36-1.37v qpi/vtt and see if any errors crop up

              Re: x58 UD3r i7 950 overclocking issues

              the ram is 1.65v rated
Does this mean I need 1.65volts to run it at a lower speed though? I was just leaving the dram voltage and everything set to auto to try and determine why it can't seem to pass these tests at stock speeds.

I just tested one stick to 150% with hci memtest and no errors I am going to test it with intelburntest running one stick now.

just to update I tested this one stick in hci memtest for 40 minutes and then intelburn test. No errors.

I am going to do this for the next two sticks to see if one of them creates the error. I can't think of anything else. Afterwards I will try raising the qpi/vtt again with all sticks but I can ensure you I tested all voltages from 1.31 to 1.37 and none allowed me to pass IBT/linx past 1 test pass.

if its rated at 1.65v then set it to 1.66v dram in the bios,i had mine set to that for 3+ years with some ocz reaper memory it will be fine, just go through each step at a time before moving on to other things to try ect,

you might be better off testing in prime 95 and blend test for your memory, and bench ibt/linx with very high for cpu as its very aggressive

                  Re: x58 UD3r i7 950 overclocking issues

I'm sure itll be fine too but I wasn't running it at 1600mhz until I had a stable overclock.

The thing is I've been trying to test in IBT/LINX for hours, it just doesn't want to pass 1 pass, tells me "stopped on error" happens like clockwork. It wasn't even passing at stock bios settings!

So far I've tested two sticks in IBT and they both have passed 10 passes, I tested one at a time. I'm going to test this last stick then see what happens if i try to OC again.

if it passes each stick but not altogether it points to dram or qpi/vtt voltage

                      stick 1 and & 2 both passed 10 passes. It took stick 1 9minutes 4 seconds, while stick 2 took 9minutes 5seconds.

I appreciate you're help btw. What do you suggest I do? Contact corsair for a rma on this? I will try overclocking with only 4gbs of ram see what happens I'm sure itll be stable.

make double sure by testing that stick in memtest or that other memory testing program you mentioned, you can rma but youd have to rma the complete 6gb set,or you could scour ebay for a single stick? best to rma as it will cost you nothing, contact corsair and request an rma number

Right now I'm about test the two good sticks.

If these two pass 10 passes I'll contact corsair and just run with 4gbs for the time being. Maybe i could convince them to take the bad ram and let me pay the difference for something better anyway... this ram is somewhat value budget but I think the stick has been bad for as long as I've had the pc. I used to get this error when I first built it at 17 out of 20 linx passes. Never thought much of it

Well I'm at a loss. I have been testing my ram now at stock bios settings using two sticks... at first I was getting the stopped on error at 2 minutes 53 seconds (the first pass). I swapped around the ram modules ( I have 3) and I was able to get to reach 5 minutes 45 seconds.. it has now said the error again.

                            this is at stock speeds.

I guess i am going to run memtest 86

Take a look a this link x58 i7 Voltage Guide [stickey please] this may help.

VCore (default: 1.28125v, Intel's max 1.375v, VCore over 1.50v on air cooling is risky)
                              What it does:
Sets max voltage to the CPU cores. (if Vdroop is disabled, it will set the min voltage instead) The i7 doesn't need much voltage at speeds under 3.8ghz. (For example, I can get 3.8ghz on 1.275 vcore) Beyond that the voltage requirements climb sharply.
                              When to raise VCore:
BSOD 101 "Clock Interrupt not received from Secondary Processor"
LinX produces errors that are very
LinX errors happen within 1 min of LinX

LinX produces BSOD within the first minute
                              CPU VTT Voltage (default: 1.1V (+0mV in BIOS) Intel's max 1.35 (+250mV)
                              What it does:
VTT connects the cores with the memory. Raising VTT helps keep a system stable at higher QPI rate. Since QPI is calculated from bclk: the higher the bclk the more VTT voltage you will need. VTT is also called "QPI/DRAM Core" on other motherboards,

Prevent CPU damage: VTT voltage must be within 0.5V of VDimm. Vdimm can fluctuate by as much as 0.05V from settings so you may want VTT within 0.45V of VDimm for that extra margin of safety. Example: if Vdimm is 1.65V, then VTT must be at least 1.20V.
When to raise CPU VTT Voltage:
                              BSOD 124 "general hardware failure"
