  • Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Boot Loop Issue

    G'Day Crew,

I recently put together a new system with the new Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH motherboard. Initial problems with BSOD's during Win7 install, chipset driver issues and Boot Loop issues.

Downloaded and installed the F4 Bios, which flashed succesfully. This helped with being able to install windows. Chipset drivers of CD were causing BSOD's as well with the error message "Bad Driver". Downloaded and used the latest drivers off the gigabyte website, that fixed those issues.

Now the big problem. Boot Loop

Mostly after a cold start or randomly after a restart, I get the boot for 1 second (nothing on screen, lights in case and fans start to spin up), then shutdown for 1 second, rinse and repeat 5 times, then boot into windows...........

Tried disabling C3 states etc, 1 stick of ram, other ram from another system, no video card (use cpu graphics instead), only SSD and DVD drive, but still getting it.

System ran for a day and a half yesterday/today and the boot loop started again. (Built system last Friday, used "old" Z68 mobo on weekened, no issues).

    System Specs:

    GA-Z77X-UP5 TH
    Intel 2600K @ 4.1Ghz Prime 95 stable
    Gigabyte GTX 690
    Crucial M4 256Gb SSD
    Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz DDR3
    WD 600Gb HDD
    Corsair AX750W PSU
    Corsair H100 Cooler
    Windows 7 64bit SP1

Not too sure what other info is needed.

I did install the Beta Bios from the sticky, F6x, I think to see if that helps, although my mouse is REALLY hard to navigate in the UEFI bios, it was fine in F4???

    Cheers,

    Rob

Re: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Boot Loop Issue

are you using xmp for your memory? cold boot issues usually point to memory voltage/settings not right, with the mb being so new you simply might need to wait for the bios's to catch up with ironing out the bugs ect

No idea really.I running UP5 almost a month and no such issue.
Maybe try to update your Backup BIOS.
Your memory is 2x4/4x4GB,running stock or?

Re: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Boot Loop Issue

Same here no boot loop issues. The UP5 TH seems to be more stable the the UD3h.

Also make sure backup bios matches the main bios. This can be done by either booting to bios flip the switch and enter qflash and flash the bios or by holding ALT+F10 at boot up.

Re: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Boot Loop Issue

          Gentleman,

Thank you for your replies. I am only running my memory at stock as such with XMP profile 1 selected, thus running at 1600Mhz. It is Corsair Vengeance, 4 x 4Gb.

I did not know that the 2nd Bios has to be the same as the primary. Should I put the F6x Beta Bios on the backup then?

I look forward to your replies. I really appreciate your help.

          Cheers,

          Rob

Re: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Boot Loop Issue

As for the backup bios, It shouldnt need to match the main bios but the board seems more stable when it does. X58 it did not matter, but p67/z68 and z77x seem to need or like both to match.

              Acebmxer,

Thank you for the reply. I went back to the F4 bios on both the primary and secondary position. Power cycle after loading the bios, cleared CMOS and loaded setup defaults.

              Hopefully it fixes the problem.

              Cheers,

Re: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Boot Loop Issue

                G'Day Crew,

Just an update, I re-installed the official F4 Bios on both the primary and backup bios position. Allowed for power cycle/shutdown after both. Cleared CMOS and then loaded setup defaults.

Ensured ALL connectors were secure including graphics, memory and power.

Installed new memory, same type though.

Booted ok initially. Browsed the net, sent some emails etc.

Shutdown, removed power for 10 minutes, powered on and got the Boot Loop. It cycled 3 times instead of usual 5.

                Sigh. Not happy.

                Cheers,

                Rob.

Re: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Boot Loop Issue

I think it may have to do with the 2600k cpu. I think most people with 2nd gen I7 cpus were having boot issues on z77x but cpu works fin in p67/z68. Maybe someone else can comment on that.

Re: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Boot Loop Issue

G'Day Crew, once again THANK YOU for your time and replies :)

I appreciate the 2600K is a Gen.2 CPU and if I knew that buying a 3730K etc will definitely fix the problem, I would buy it immediately. I may do this, 1. To eliminate the problem 2. Upgrade it anyway

I have noticed the POST codes, but not noticed if it was or stops at DB before rebooting, sorry. Will confirm shortly.

I have noticed that the XMP profile sets exactly the correct voltage and timings for the Corsair Vengeance memory. I also set them manually to see if that would help. It did not. I also tried a single stick x 4 and it did not help either.
I actually have used another set of identical ram (from sons PC) and it has not helped. Also tried no Primary graphics installed, same same.

I thought that my Corsair AX750 might not have enough power for the system, but have read AND confirmed with Corsair that it should be sufficient for the components installed.

If I have to buy a new board, so be it. Will probably just have to pony up the $$$$ as sending it back to the retailer is ALWAYS a pain, they will test it and find no fault as usual................

Hi mate im also getting these exact same cold boot issues. I thought I was done with em but obviously not just happen to me now. I also have a 2600K this is my 2nd one now. This issue is totally random im on F13a bios. Mobo powers ON n OFF few times eventually powers on & retains overclock. I wish GB would get this sorted.

its best to put your full system in signature. This way it helps to see if its certain hardware which causes this issue. Im currently trying memory with XMP disabled with same timing 10 11 10 28 1t and instead of auto voltage which is just under 1.6v ive bumped it up a lil to 1.62v. Does anyone know which ME firmware is built in to bios F13a. The cold boot for me is random usually it will boot no probs and run sweet at 4.8ghz

I think ive sussed the cold boot issue. Ive disabled XMP. setup memory timings manually upped DRAM voltage to 1.62v. My backup bios is F11 and main bios is what im using F13a. So far not had the cold boot issue. Ive tried ON n OFF plenty times. I hope this cures it for good:)
