  • GA-X58A-UD5 rev 1.0 questions

    Hi!

Freshman here . So I did some reading here and there and naturally have some questions about a couple of things.

I have a GA-X58A-UD5 rev 1.0 motherboard. The latest modified BIOS from JZ I could find has these:

So my question is that what's up with the Marvell RAID contorller? The MV-9128, the SATA3 one.
Because I was thinking about buying two SATA3 SSDs and putting them in RAID0, but I saw the warning on the Gigabyte site, that you shouldn't put SSDs on this controller in RAID0.
Does this still apply for the latest BIOS and Marvell controller firmware? And does the latest(F8b) mobo BIOS contain the firmware for the Marvell controller at all?
Or do I have to update that one with the 1.0.0.1701 found on station-drivers? I also read something in a topic about the firmware from main BIOS overwriting the updated one or something, a setting which you must turn off?

These topics were old so I don't know how up-to-date information did I get. All I would like to know what could I expect when buying two SATA3 SSDs, putting them in RAID0 on the Marvell chip, with the latest firmwares and BIOS. Does it still have "dropping" problems, severe speed problems?

    Thank you!

    Re: GA-X58A-UD5 rev 1.0 questions

the marvell ports wont handle two sata3 ssd's in raid 0,only new intel sata3 ports have the best read/write figures for one ssd or two in raid, dont know if current bios has those newer roms in it,if not you need to flash the modded bios and you mean back up bios flashing the main bios? i think(not 100%sure) you hold alt and f12 at splash screen to flash back up with main bios so both bios chips have same version on them

      Thank you for answering!

Yes okay I understand the first part, the Marvell chips will not be as fast as the new Intel SATA3 chips. I just want to know if they will work, but someone in the Latest BIOS topic said, you can't use the Marvell and Intel RAIDs at the same time, the BIOS will not allow it. That is sad news. As I would have like a couple of 500GB SATA2 drives in RAID for storage.

What I mean about the Marvell firmware:GA-X58A-UD5 rev.2.0

You can see at the Integrated Peripherals page(4th one) --> there is a "SATA3 Firmware Selection [Auto]" - option, which I have no idea what it does. I read it somewhere that is must be set manually because Auto will overwrite the chip firmware with the one in the BIOS or something?

      Thank you again!

Yes you can not use intel raid along with the marvell raid. If you need raid on both controllers the work around is set intel to raid and the marvell to ahci. set up the intel raid like normal but once in windows you use the marvell controller software and even though it set to ahci you can enable raid.

As far as the firmware for the marvel If gigabyte updates the firmware in the bios auto will/should detect the bios has a newer firmware and attempt to update the controller. Some time this does not happen automatically so its suggest to set it to force and it will force the update. I have not heard from someone why they would not want to update the firmware.

          Re: GA-X58A-UD5 rev 1.0 questions

          Okay I encountered a problem.

Today I wanted to increase the memory in my system. So I bought 2 sets of Kingston 12GB 1600MHz Tri-Kit RAM modules, so 6x4GB in total.
I put them in the board, only 16GB gets recognized and before booting from the hard drives I get Detecting DRAM size... message then the machine reboots, this continues for a while then it skips this and boots, but only 16GB is seen.

          1. I tried reseating the CPU, searching for bent pins(there are none), I am using latest F8b BIOS, cleared the CMOS.
          2. I have tried the Default BIOS settings and I tried OC-ing to 4.2 GHz setting XMP off, manually setting the memory timings, frequency to 1600MHz, giving it 1.66 DRAM in the BIOS, 1.35 QPI, 1.35 Vcore etc. problem is the same.

I read multiple reports of this on the internet. I read the exact same problem here (GA-X58A-UD3R and CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 - can't get past 16 GB? - The Corsair Support Forums) they say it was a faulty motherboard and they had to RMA. I have a GA-X58A-UD5 rev 1.0 board. They also mention the problem here (GA-X58-USB3 With X990 i7 RAM Problem) RMA also solved the problem.

          Any thoughts on this?

            Re: GA-X58A-UD5 rev 1.0 questions

have you tested each white slot with just one stick of ram? it should boot up if each slot is working, test all the sticks to see if you have a dead or faulty ram stick, dont know how you can test the blue slots as they only become active when all white slots are filled, and qpi/vtt can be anything from 1.35v-1.45v+ but i would test between 1.35v-1.4v

              Re: GA-X58A-UD5 rev 1.0 questions

Okay I may have jumped the gun here. I took out the CPU again, blew on the socket, took out the CMOS battery, for 1 hour, put everything back together and now BIOS sees every socket and the total of 24GB of RAM.

So it just might work, also wazza300 can you suggest an advanced memory timing template? The one in your sig does not containg values there.
These Kingston RAM are rated 9-9-9-27 on 1600MHz. So what should I set these tRRD and tRFC etc. to?
