  • GA-X58A-UD3R and new SSD drive

    Hi,
I just plug my new SSD Corsair Force 120gig and I'm a little disappointed with my tests results under windows xp 64
    My system are: GA-X58A-UD3R
    I7-3.06GHZ, Radeon HD6870, memory:Muskhin cas 7 6gig, 750W corsair PSU,
Before connecting new SSD I read some good articles posted in the group, but still many things unclear for me.
Since making Raid with SSD is unsafe(no Trim) I decide to run only one drive witch givin me only 180mb/s transfer rate in write mode and in read 204.2mb/s average under intel ports setup to Raid since I have also connected 2 Raptors 300gig/each in raid 0 and those giving me almost same results as SSD.
Connecting SSD to Marvell port look a bit better : read average 280mb/s and write 182mb/s.
Apparently Intel ports better then Marvell but not in my case.
Can someone tell me what max speed can I expect from SSD in my X58a-ud3r environment.
Maybe some suggestion for setup the ports also I was thinking to buy a Biostar SATA III 6G b/s 2 port PCI Express Internal Controller Card and that one my help me to improve my transfer rate.
    All comments appreciate.
    Thanks
    Adam

Re: GA-X58A-UD3R and new SSD drive

for best results you need the new intel sata3 ports found on,it should have mentioned it where you purchased the ssd? p67/x68 and x79 mb's,it usually mentions it where you purchased the ssd? and i think the biostar pci card will be using the marvell controller, havent seen any add in cards that use the newer intel sata3 controller

it might be same read/write as your raid set up but the ssd 4k read/write will be much greater which is where it matters the most, use atto bench tool aswell to give more clearer reading but dont run too many tests as it will degrade ssd performance, you might need the new intel raid rom adding to your current bios? not sure but a few users on here know how to modify the bios to include it

Re: GA-X58A-UD3R and new SSD drive

        Thanks for fast response.
To make sure I understanding correctly I will have to ask you again.
The numbers from my readings are the most I will get?
ONLY If I run SSD in raid i will accomplish 500mb/s performance?
GA-X58A-UD3R has Sata3 ports (",it should have mentioned it where you purchased the ssd? p67/x68 and x79 mb's,it usually mentions it where you purchased the ssd?") --this one is not clear for me.
best results I will get with p67/x68 x79 boards?
Should I get Biostar SATA III 6G b/s 2 port PCI Express Internal Controller Card or not

The P45 chipset diagram shows that each pci-e x1 slot's bandwidth is 500MB/s.
Maybe you could install this card in the lower pci-e x16 slot that would have an 8GB/s bandwidth and your graphics card's bandwidth would also drop to 8x bandwidth.

yes best results are on the newest mb's,the marvell sata3 ports arnt as good as the new intel sata3 ports, the biostar will have the marvell ports on it,you will see more speed in raid but no trim support

The diagram may show show they are 500MB/s per lane but it's actually 250MB/s.

Re: GA-X58A-UD3R and new SSD drive

No limitations means I wont gain anything by buying Biostar card?will be same since it has marvell ports on it?

You also metion to do 4k partition and that will speed up my proformance.I wish to use windows xp64bit 2003
After creating partition do some testing and should be a bit faster?
What to do to make work faster?otherwise is waist of money since my raid preforming almost same.Click image for larger version

                      Final thoughts,
Any adds on cards in the market (not expensive) supporting Intel sata 3.
You posted;"you might need the new Intel raid rom adding to your current bios? not sure but a few users on here know how to modify the bios to include it"
any idea who my do that and after modification that will enable me to use Intel ports as sata3?
Last question: the tests I posted is the most I can get from my motherboard or I need different setup?
                      Thanks

What version of the motherboard do you have? GA-X58A-UD3R - F8b
                        GA-X58A-UD3R (2.0) - FH5

Let me know and I can do the bios mod for you.

I have looked my self for a true sata3 card and there are not many out there that dont use the marvell controller. So for true sata3 only "Real Way" to get sata3 is with the new p68/z68 boards.

Which bios would you like modified bios FF or the Fh5 that I posted? I would recommend using the latest version bios as it will also could have updated sata3 firmware in it. (not something I can modify)

The mod that I would be doing will just update the intel raid rom which is for the sata2 ports. As for any speed gains I doubt you would see any, maybe little. would not hurt to try.

No It should not hurt your board at all. But with anything that has be modified there are always a risk. I have had no issues with my bios mods but you should read up on how to recover from a bad bios flash in case something does go wrong.

If the flash goes ok and for what ever reason you dont like the changes you just flash back to the unmodified bios.

last question, what is the reason we will be updating the rom for Intel sata2 ports (what that will help if not for speed?)
