  • How To Access 3 Terrabyte Seagate Drive on X58A-UD5

I've got the latest beta firmware and I've set the bios to EFI in the section that says something like "EFI bootable CD/DVD..." When I start the computer the drive shows up as 3000 GB when going through it's initial start up, but when I get into Windows 7 (64bit Ultimate) and click on the drive Windows says the drive needs to be formatted before I can use it but only gives me the option to format 349GBs. How can I get Windows to recognize the whole drive?

    Thanks!

    Don

What controller is the drive connected to, Intel controller or the gigabyte controller? Is ahci enabled?

It sounds like you are using this drive for storage and not the OS drive correct? When installing windows at the point where you can select and/or formatt the drive to install windows onto. Does the drive show up there as 3tb or 350gb?

Thanks for the reply Ace. AHCI is enabled. I have the hard drive in an external Blacx dock connected via esata to the back of the computer. I'm not sure if it's intel or not. How can I see this? Just to clarify I'm actually not installing Windows on the drive. This will ultimately be a media storage drive.

        You read the storage specs
        GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-X58A-UD5 (rev. 2.0)

X58a-ud5... what rev 1.0 or 2.0? which bios version? F8b?

Ohh ok its a external esata drive. That works of gigabyte/jmicron.

All should work Gigabyte did release a 3tb unlock utility but its not offered for either rev 1.0 or 2.0 for win 7 64bit.

Try using disk management to format the drive. Set it to GPT and ntfs format. If you selected MBR that might be why.

Wow, thanks Ace! That did it.

Eventually I'd like to mount this drive internally. Will there be any problems with that?

              Should be just fine.

I just dont think windows can boot from GPT partition (I could be wrong). So as long as its a storage drive you should ok.
