  • i7 -920/EX58-UD-5 @ 4.2GHz High Temps

    Hello,

there is a welath of information here that I am very grateful for.

I have manged to get my i7-920 to 4.2GHz, it runs OCCT for 3 hours and Prmie95 for 12 hours plus with no errors so I am confident it is stable, however my peak Temps are 82C, I am using the below bios settings, I would like to reduce the temps, I have Hyperthreading on and F12 bios. I have not found a way to reduce my cpu voltage below 1.425v and stay stable, my QPI/VTT is 1.355v all other settings are auto. CPU-Z under load is 1.392v.
Have I just got a chip that requires this high voltage,

    Any advice/settings would be welcome,

    thankyou in advance,

    Re: i7 -920/EX58-UD-5 @ 4.2GHz High Temps

Your temps are fine for your current settings. 80c ~ 85c is the most common @ 4.2GHz air cooling depending on voltage used under prime95/linx.
In games and general use it won't go over 60c ~ 65c.

yes everything looks good. Only other way to reduce voltage would be to drop HT that will drop your temps about 10-15c. I run 1.4v vcore for 4.5 ghz with ht off.

to the op are you using a c0/d0 chip? what type of thermal paste did you use? you might help reduce temps abit with some mx2 or tx2??

setting system performance enhance to standard might help you lower voltages a little aswell

          Re: i7 -920/EX58-UD-5 @ 4.2GHz High Temps

Try setting the uncore to x17 and lowering your QPI-VTT this may reduce temps as the mem contoller on the cpu is adding to heat. You could also try lowering your mem divider and running at slower mem, with an even lower qpi-vtt, a small drop in mem speed is hardly noticable

Also 4.2 Ghz may not be that big a deal try 4.16 Ghz (21 x 198) you could use less volts and will not notice a lot of difference in performance, in which case you could the go back to x8 SPD as the mem will be delow 1600
