    Switching from AHCI to RAID.. Is it OK?

    Hey guys,

    I have Windows 7 currently installed on my 2x500GB Barracudas in RAID 0. In BIOS (X48-DS5) I have the SATA mode set to RAID. I want to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard and have it as dual boot. I just bought a second 500GB hdd to install it on. I have gone through LifeHacker's tutorial on how to install Mac on a Windows machine, and one of the requirements is having the SATA mode set to AHCI.

    Now, the big question... Is it OK to switch between AHCI to RAID mode without it messing something up with my Windows 7 install?

    I think in this case, it will destroy the RAID array, since its running on raid 0, data is split between 2 drives, in other words, you will lose ur data.

    What u can do is ghost the main drive and apply it onto the new 500GB HDD just in case switching to AHCI makes windows unbootable.

    then install mac onto any hard disk.

      If I understand you correctly you have 2x500gb drivers raid 0 with windows installed on them. Then you have 1 500gb drive stand alone drive for Mac OS X. So you have a total of 3 drives? If so then Yes you can switch between Raid and Achi. Just save your bios settings as a profile one with raid one with achi. As long as you DO NOT touch your 2x500 gb drives in mac OS X they will be fine when you switch back and attempt to boot into windows. Same goes for when your in windows don't touch the drive that mac os x is installed which should be ok as windows will not recognize it just do let windows format it.

        Ok, that makes sense. So before I boot into Windows or Mac, I have to go into bios and make sure it's set to the correct profile? Or does it automatically assign itself to whatever OS you boot into?

          No you would have to boot into the bios every time you wanted to switch OS's and load the appropriate profile. The bios is separate from the OS

            Actually no you would not. If you add an extra drive, you can install OSX onto it and depending on the boot loader used (look up Chameleon and PC EFI) then you make sure the Mac drive is the default startup drive. The machine will go through it's POST and when the bootloader on the Mac side comes up, you will have the option to boot into OSX or into Windows.

            Simple.

              Did you read his first post? In order to boot mac os off at hdd in ACHI and boot windows off raid. last I checked you can only switch between the 2 in bios.

              Your way will work but he wont be able to boot into windows as its installed on 2 seperat hdds that are in a raid-0 config.

                The RAID mode does support AHCI. So are you sure that you have to revert to "plain AHCI"?

                  i think there seperate ahci and raid thats why theres two options,you have to go in bios and enable/disable ahci depending on which os you want to boot into,i have the same situation i tweaked the registry in win7 to enable ahci after installing in ide mode and can boot into ahci now,but when i want to boot into xp i have to disable ahci in bios......i cant find and decent guides to explain how to enable ahci in xp if originally installed in ide

                    I'd think that http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=444831 is quite solid. One just have to change the PCI ID's of the "IDE device" and "AHCI device", since they are different that in those ICH9 boards. And you can check the AHCI PCI ID from your win7 installation.

                    However, IDE vs AHCI is different from AHCI vs RAID. There are essentially three modes in the ICH:
                    1. IDE
                    2. AHCI
                    3. AHCI with RAID enabled.

                    After all, AHCI features, like hotplug, are used by RAID.
