    Re: Ideal OC

3.80GHz should be "easy" with reasonable temperatures.
Use the forum search feature and take a look at Conner's Q9550 o/c threads.
Going higher than 3.90GHz will take a lot more effort for minimal gains.

        Re: Ideal OC

As all Q9650's are an E0 stepping, 4GHz should also be pretty easy on 1.3625V with LLC on, maybe slightly more or less depending on the individual CPU. An extra 200MHz will certainly benefit a Crossfire setup, those 4850's will suck up all the CPU power you can give them. Going from 3.8GHz to 4GHz is still a nice 200MHz gain, and as long as the board is up to it, you'll be fine.

The first thing to do would be update to the latest Gigabyte beta BIOS for your board. Don't worry about it being beta, it's perfectly stable. Often the Beta BIOS' are just re-named later and released as a final version.

You should be OK with that cooler, but bear in mind that compared to a TRUE, it's probably 6-8c off the pace on a moderate OC, and more as you crank things up further. It is a popular HSF to modify. ONe can remove the plastic shroud and fan, then zip tie a 120MM fan to the top, through the heatpipes (the bottom of the fan will hook under the bottom shroud mounts. The cooler is also pretty noisy at the full 12V, this is because the fan shroud rattles and vibrates quite a lot. No doubt you will need the fan on maximum if going for 3.8-4GHz.

          Re: Ideal OC

480 cpu host clock speed ,using 9 multiplier would approximate to 4.32 Ghz cpu speed at 1930 fsb.
Depending on memory settings tho and limiting memory to 9.5-10 Gb/s bandwidth.

you can enter most of the figures yeh.. but do q9650 run easily at 4.4-4.5 Ghz?.Is there a massive cpu power draw at that speed? do they get really hot? .Do 4 memory sticks limit your overclock ,i know it does mine but ive only tried with mixed 667/800 memory.
Check overclock posts by conners .. q9550 is much closer to your cpu power needs, then again he only uses 2 memory sticks.

Actually check out this post which is with 4 sticks I believe.
