Re: Overclocking Gigabyte EX58-UD5 with F9e BIOS

OK first of all I feel the need to rename this post as I am now using BIOS f9m

Using this BIOS I have managed to set an effective OC of 3.8 GHz below are the settings I used having taken Lsd's advice and read up a bit on optimal BCLK/CPU clock ratio combinations. So here are the settings which worked for my system

      Advanced CPU Features:
CPU Clock Ratio ................................ [x20] (x21 effective as Turbo is on)
Intel(R) Turbo Boost Tech .................. [disabled]
      CPU Cores Enabled ............................ [All]
      CPU Multi Threading .......................... [Enabled]
CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) ................... [Disabled]
      C3/C6/C7 State Support .................... [Disabled]
      CPU Thermal Monitor ......................... [Enabled]
      CPU EIST Function ............................ [Disabled]

      Bi-Directional PROCHOT ..................... [Enabled]

      Standard Clock Control:
Base Clock (BCLK) Control ................ [Enabled]
      BCLK Frequency (MHz) ..................... 180
PCI Express Frequency (MHz) ........... Auto [100]

PCI Express Clock Drive ................... Auto [900mV]
CPU Clock Skew ............................. Auto [0ps]
      IOH Clock Skew ............................. Auto[0ps]

      Advanced DRAM Features:
      Performance Enhance ...................... [Turbo]
Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P) ......... [Disabled]
System Memory Multiplier (SPD) ........ x10 (OCZ Blade memory runs at a final frequency of 1800 MHz, it is rated at 2000MHz)
DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD) .......... [Quick]

      Each Channel A + B + C set:

      CAS Latency Time ......................7
      tRCD ........................................8
      tRP ..........................................7
      tRAS ........................................20

      Ch-A Data VRef. 0.750v [AUTO]
      Ch-B Data VRef. 0.750v [AUTO]
      Ch-C Data VRef. 0.750v [AUTO]
      Ch-A Address VRef. 0.750v [AUTO]
      Ch-B Address VRef. 0.750v [AUTO]
      Ch-C Address VRef. 0.750v [AUTO]

My CPU idle temperature is around 38- 40 degC

So I am quite happy with that so far, will be doing various burnin tests over the next week but its lookin good. So thanks to all those who helped me out with pointers and advice. If anything looks unusual in the settings let me know

Of course nothing ever goes perfectly and but I will make a seperate post about that little annoyance

Re: Overclocking Gigabyte EX58-UD5 with F9e BIOS

you could keep everything the same for 3.8ghz but set system performance enhance to standard, cpu voltage on normal setting, qpi on 1.3000 volts and enable eist and c1e...i run with those settings and i lose 5-6c off idle temps and it doesnt run at full throttle at idle only when the cpu is loaded the cpu normal setting only uses 1.18750 volts and it will use alot less with c1e enabled

          Hey Wazza,

Thanks for the info, wanna post your settings for 3.8GHz under this post using the same template I used? Lsd provided it but it would be interesting to compare the two in full

Re: Overclocking Gigabyte EX58-UD5 with F9e BIOS

              Wazza,

OK took Turbo off and upped BCLK to 190 in order to get the 3.8GHz OC. As a result QPI frequency rose to 6.8GHz and the uncore frequency to 3800 MHz. I have enabled c1e and eist as you suggested I would say idle temp is about 3 degC cooler at 37 - 38 degC so some improvement over what it was before. My memory is now running at 1900 MHz which leaves some headroom that I can live with. Incidentally are you using the F9m BIOS?

I have left QPI/Vtt at 1.4V, QPI PLL at 1.88V and IOH core at 1.24V since in my experience they were they key settings that allowed me to increase BCLK whilst keeping the system stable and reliably booting

Other good thing is the double start appears to have dissappeared. it just starts posts and boots even from a cold start just like PCs are meant to :)

Re: Overclocking Gigabyte EX58-UD5 with F9e BIOS

you dont have to disable turbo, its in system performance enhance theres three settings standard-turbo-extreme<---set it to standard set bclk to 180 and leave turbo enabled to give you 3.8ghz but set qpi to 1.3volts i can run with that voltage easy, set cpu voltage to the normal setting

Re: Overclocking Gigabyte EX58-UD5 with F9e BIOS

Yeah when I said "disable turbo" I meant set to standard in system performance. My understanding is if you set this to standard not turbo then the effective multiplier is x20 not x21 and so you have to go to 190 on BCLK to reach the 3.8GHz OC target (190 x 20). I dont think there is any "disable" setting in the BIOS for turbo mode except under CIA2 is that what you were referring to when you said "no need to disable turbo"? I do currently have CIA2 disabled.

Using the settings above I tried reducing the QPI/Vtt voltage to 1.3V as you suggested and whilst the system posted OK got BSODs on startup of Win7 (32-bit), still got same thing at 1.34V so have decided to leave QPI/Vtt where I originally had it at 1.4V which works fine for me with the exception of one little niggling problem which I will post seperately on.

Anyhooo thats the current state of the OC experimenting.
