  • pc wont post or boot after 2GB more ram installed!!!

    Hi all,

first of all here is my rig:

    core 2 <nobr style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 100%; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" id="itxt_nobr_2_0">duo</nobr> e8400 cpu
    GA-EP45-DS3 Mobo
    g.skill 4 X 1 GB pc8500 1066mhz 5-5-5-15
    4870 gfx card
    corsair vx 550w psu

so i recently decided to upgrade to 4 GB of ram after initially having 2 GB running perfecly for over a year on windows vista 32BIT.
    I got the extra 2GBs because i got win7 64 bit -------so i bought exacly the same ram as my old one G.skill 2 x 1 GB pc8500 1066mhz 5-5-5-15

The problem is the system wont boot after I install the 4 sticks of ram but will run perfecly fine with 2 sticks

Ive tried the 2 new sticks alone and they worked but using all of the 4GB wont let me boot the system I also tried diffrent combinations like old ram with new and results were that as long as its 2GB it will boot but not 4GB

after a lot of googling here are the thing i tried until now:

    updated bios - nothing
shifted the sticks in diffrent combinations -nothing
i set the voltage to 2.0V and 2.1V in BIOS (on the ram the sticker says 2.0-2.1v) -nothing
i installed and reinstalled the sticks many times -nothing

Im really desperate ive tried everything

anyone has an idea of whats happening? im sure nothing is defective when it comes to hardware because i tried the sticks on the 2 other slots alone and system booted

    Thanks in advance

Boot with 2GB and set the following:

Set voltage to the max supported

Set MCH Core to 1.28V or +0.2 what ever your Mobo shows.

Make sure the Primary timings are manually set.

Make sure the System Memory Multiplier is set corrently and that the projected RAM speed shown states "1066 or very close.

Now shut down and install all 4GB and see if you can boot.

If not you may need to go to advanced timings and set Static tRead/Performance level manually. Set it to 9 for now and then try again with 4GB (in combination with all the other settings changed previously of course).

Take a careful look at the new RAM you bought. It's not sufficient to just have more "PC8500 1066 5-5-5-15" it must also be of the exact same model eg "F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK". If not then you have mismatched RAM.

Re: pc wont post or boot after 2GB more ram installed!!!

Guys i dont know whats happening but every time i make a MINOR modification on bios it woont boot and does 1 long beep and 1 short beep right after

Even modifications like just put 9x ratio for CPU (which should be at 9 originally)

i dont understand whats going on if i do A SINGLE modification to values in bios system wont boot and i have to shut it down like 4 times then remove power cord and plug it in so it can boot and it puts its own values

its driving me crazy :( i thought this mobo was better than this..

Have you tried clearing CMOS yet? See http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/bios...76/#post258596 give it 20-40 minutes clear, and an overnight if that does not help.

Ir's a bit of a voodoo, but I've seen it help couple of people that have problems with BIOS changes.

What do you mean originally? Is it not set to 9 by default, or you mean you changed it and can't change it back?

Are you using the latest BIOS and did you load optimized defaults and reboot after you flashed or built the system if you have not updated the BIOS?

If you have not updated the BIOS please do, here is a guide on how to use Qflash to update your BIOS

                    mohwner,
It would be helpful if system specs could be added to your usercp/signature, and if you could get an EP45 template from here, and fill it out with the settings from your bios. (Ignore any existing settings, change to yours.) If set to auto, put auto.

I assume you have two sets of 2x1 rather than a matched set of 4x1. That can work, but also can be a problem. Two pairs may require lower speeds and looser timings.

Re: pc wont post or boot after 2GB more ram installed!!!

I have had a PC that everytime a BIOS setting was changed the PC would not POST, it actually turned out that the PC would not Hot boot. If I turned the Power off on the PSU switch and turned the PC back on, it worked fine. Problem turned out to be the RAM, it tests 100% OK with about 30 hours memtest, swapped to different brand and worked fine. This problem also didn't occur with 2 sticks, only 4.
