    500 GB segate SATA HDD not accessable

    Hi All

    i have upgraded my system with below details

    Mother Board- GA-MA78GM-DS2H
    and AMD Phenone II X2 (3.1GHZ 6MB cache)
    2 Gb DDR2
    500 GB segate SATA HDD

    i have connected my SATA HDD to sata_0 port and i am using sony (IDE) DVD .
    in BIOS SATA 500 GB is detecting. but during XP(32bit)set up it is says the harddisk is not accessable.but there ia display of (500 GB as id 0,atapi...etc) but not available for partion selection in that place msg
    is not accessable

    i tried the same keeping as native ID/RAID/AH..
    in all cases i got the sme message.

    later surfing the net downloaded driver from the gigabyte site in the floppy and tried to access.i went up to the selection of the recommended file and then on next screen i got the selected driver file and then i got error message that it seems the hardisk is not configured in your system...etc.

    i am cluless what to do ....?

    can some body have experinced similar problem .......help me out ....?

    also let me know on this configuration .....

    Assuming that you have a brand new, unformatted hard drive:
    Have you tried formatting and partitioning your hard drive from a floppy or CD/DVD with free software from the HDD manufacturer's website?

        I don't know if the newer versions of windows allows you to setup (format and partition) an unformatted hard disk. You need to have at least one formatted partition to install your operating system.

        I've set up several partitions on my system:
        C: operating system only
        D: partition for temporary files and downloads
        E: media files; audio & visual
        F: partition for archived files and an updated folder for "My Documents".
        G: through I: (I won't bore you with the details.)

        It's up to you how you setup/organize your disk partitions.

          What service pack is the Windows Disk you are installing with?

          I think you need a service pack 2 disk for Windows to install on a SATA HDD regardless of what mode you have it running in in BIOS..unless you can inject the drivers for your SATA controller with a floppy disk.

          (press F6 when prompted to load third party drivers)

            As long as the SATA controller is running in IDE mode and not AHCI or RAID, XP does not require any drivers. It is treated the same as a Parallel ATA device, XP makes no distinction. This includes the original RTM of XP, regardless of service pack level

            Use all the common trouble shooting techniques first, such as using another SATA cable, making sure that if there are any jumpers present, they are set correctly etc.

            If you still have issues, install the HDD in another machine as a spare or in your existing machine with Windows installed on the old HDD. Using Windows Disk Management, initialise the disk and then quick format it using NTFS and the default cluster size. Now shut down the PC, remove the old drive, replace it with the new one and re-try the installation. You can also initialise and partition a disk using diskpart which can be run from the XP recovery console. One big 500GB partition is fine. There's zero performance advantage or organisational advantage to having loads of separate partitions. This is what folders are for. If you want your data in a separate place to your OS and programs, use a separate drive. That way you're protected in case of hardware faults. Extra partitions will not protect you. If you constantly install and remove OS's then you may want to have the drive split into two, but most people will install an OS once.

            Note that having a formatted partition on a HDD to install XP should not be necessary. XP is usually more than capable of setting itself up on a RAW drive. Why you're experiencing this issue is a mystery. Double check the BIOS settings for your SATA ports to make sure they are in Legacy IDE mode.

            As another alternative you can download the relevant AHCI driver for your motherboard and set the SATA ports to AHCI mode. Hit [F6] on XP install to load this driver. The driver will be clearly labeled for use as a driver to install XP. the download may even be a utility that creates a bootable floppy or .iso image for you to burn to CD.

              Hi All

              Thanks for the updates

              Actuallty yesterday i tried with Vista and it too did not give any luck to me .i tried in all the SATA ports for installation .I even tried to access the drivers from the motherborad dvd but result was the drive is not aceesable(there is no space for installation ...etc ). it is almost one week i am struggling on the same issue. i did all possibile way execept formatting the hardidisk .

              everytime in bios it is identifying the hardidsk and its size but when it comes to installation the hardisk is not acessable.even yesterday some times i got message as change the drive controller settings in bios ...

              durig vista setup too it shows hardisk with its size
              but option for formatting was disabled.

              will bios updation will help me ...?


              is there anything do we need to do while using a new HDD ?

              even i tried with unbutu but even there too it says partiton requires but disk is not available for partition ....

                Seagate.com has tutorials for installing Sata hard drives.
                Any time I've installed a new ATA or SATA hard drive, I've never had any problems when I first formatted and partitioned the hard drive with the OEM or aftermarket disk partitioning software.
                Their Seagate Installation guide refers to DiscWizzard software for cloning a hard drive if needed. You should be able to easily download their free hard drive software from their website.
                Some hard drives come with a jumper pre-installed on a SATA hard drive that limits HDD speed to 150 MB/sec (Sata1 speeds).
