  • PCI ExpressFrequency

I have a GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P mobo and I am running an E8500 @3.8 and everything is fine. I have noticed that it is recommended that the PCI Express Frequency should never be left on Auto. Is this correct? If so why?

Set it to 100...Why? Cause I said to.. Actually I don't know why but that what everyone recommends.

      LOL @ Conners.
Yeah it's kind of a myth, from what I've seen so far (couple of months) I haven't seen the PCI-E frequency chnage as result of overclocking.

        Re: PCI ExpressFrequency

Thank you. I've set it to 100. I have CPUID and the temp hasn't changed when I went from AUTO to 100. I set it to 100 because Conners said to.

          Re: PCI ExpressFrequency

Thats what I set it to on all my gigabyte boards is PCI-E to [100] and Performance Enhance set to [standard] also you may want to [disable] USB Legacy storage detect in integrated periferals section. Except when you need to flash from USB of course.

            Re: PCI ExpressFrequency

It's both a legacy thing and to make sure on different BIOS and board revisions that the PCIe bus stays at stock 100MHz.

Many a time on older boards, increasing the FSB by 1MHz when the PCIE was on auto also increased the PCIe frequency to 101MHz etc, so a 50MHz FSB OC would result in a PCIe frequency of 150MHz. This is not ideal and many mobos don't like to run the PCIe bus much past stock. There's no performance gain by OCing it either.

Setting 100 guarantees that the bus is at 100MHz. Auto may have gotten sensible on your board and also lock the bus to 100, but it's easy and IMO more certain and problem free to set 100 in the first place.
