    P55-UD4P - Power supply advice please

    I am purchasing components for my next system build and hoping someone here can advise me as to the amount of wattage I should be looking for in a power supply. I plan to initially install the following components:

    Gigabyte P55-UD4P motherboard
    Intel i7 860 processor
    Corsair 8GB (4x2GB) Cas 8 memory
    AMD/ATI 5870 (one initially, maybe two later) video card
    2 or 3 hard drives, one of which might be a small SSD
    Hauppauge internal TV/HVR card
    Tower-type CPU cooler (Noctua or other brand, probably 2 fans)
    Case with 2 or 3 fans

    I am considering power supplies from 600 to 750 watts. Is this enough if/when a second video card is added?

    just buy the highest wattage you can afford but 750-850 watts should be plenty,shop around and get the best deal

      I'd go for a 750-850W model. A really good 600W will do the job, but you'll be well north of the comfort zone and potentially less than 50W away from the rated max draw.

      I plan on upgrading to two 58xx cards around june of next year (maybe two 5890's if they're out then) and will be using this PSU (Corsair HX750). Virtually everything else will be replaced at a later date, ie CPU mobo and RAM (i7?) but the PSU will last me for a couple of builds yet.

      With the system you detailed in your post, you'll probably be sucking about 380W-400W at full load when gaming. adding another card should only increase that by another ~188W. At this rate of power draw, the 600W unit is on the edge, but 750W + is fine.

        Thanks, wazza and psycho. I'll probably go for the 750 watt.

        Psycho, I have thought about the Lian Li A09 but wasn't sure about the ventilation. I guess it works for you.

          It'll all depend if you want the extra videocard. I have the HX750w and it ran great with my setup plus an 8800GTS for physx.

            Yep, the Lian Li isn't bad air flow wise. It only has the traditional single input, single extraction, but that's basically all you need. I find the concept of cases such as the Coolermaster HAF to be way over the top. There are so many fans that you could very well be compromising air flow. That and the fact that they look really nasty. I'd rather have a stylish aluminium case than a mutated Transformer sitting next to me. Horrible!
