Re: New machine: ep45-ud3p posting, then crashing

Is that idling at 48, or is that a temp under load?

If that is your idle temp, you might want to try a stress test like Prime95 or OCTT and monitor your temps with CoreTemp, RealTemp, SpeedFan or something similar.

Interesting... I hadn't thought about that. It was at idle. I'm running OSx 10.6 - are any/all of those stress test applications available for OS X? Any recommendations for a temp test for Mac?

      Thanks!

Re: New machine: ep45-ud3p posting, then crashing

        Google gave me this:
Download CPUTest 0.2 - CPUTest - stress test a CPU and its cooling system - Softpedia

        No warranties, obviously.

Even better, it seems that Prime95 is known as MPrime when it is Mac'd.

          Free Software - GIMPS

Choose the version appropriate to your machine, and then all you will need is a way to monitor your temps. Here is the first one I found:

As always, your mileage may vary...

Fascinating, I cut and pasted URLs and the web site changed them to show the headers on the web pages represented by those URLs. Others may be used to that, but it is new to me.

Re: New machine: ep45-ud3p posting, then crashing

Thanks whovous, I'll take a look at those tonight after work. I'm not planning on overclocking - just running things vanilla at the moment to see how 3.0Ghz and 8GB DDR2 plus 512MB video treat me. Is this (temp monitoring and CPU stress testing) still something I should look into?

If you are not overclocking, it is not a matter of life or death, but it is still worth knowing about, I think. You don't need to run it often, but if you find a problem, it will definitely be worth the time spent.
