  • x-58 extreme maximum memory capacity is 6 gb?!

    Hello,

I just upgraded to 12 gb from 6 gb,
but there are some problems, please help me to clear this situation:

All system information programs says that maximum installable memory is 6 kb, which is false I think.

But after installing all memory sticks, bios says that it is only 8 gb in the computer.
    Windows too.
But everst, sandra, siw etc says that all slots (6) are filled with 2 gb ram, so it's ok. But total memory is 8100.

Latest f9a beta bios and x64 windows 7. (7100 free)

    Please help me on this.

    Regards,
    Pubem

Do you see N/A listed on any of the channels in the MIT Page of the BIOS? If you do then you may need to adjust your QPI/Vtt and or Dram voltages.

Are you SURE you do not have ANY bent CPU Socket pins?

Re: x-58 extreme maximum memory capacity is 6 gb?!

      Hi,

Finally I realized that memory can't reach speed of it's specification.
If I go over 1600, than amount of memory is 8gb.
But setting 1600 or below, on next restart (even without turning off the computer) the memory is 12 gb.

Now I just tested 1 stick of 2gb ram, and on 1866 it is failed by memtest and lynx.
I will check some other stick, but I really don't know whats happening.
Ocz 1600 intel extreme was on 1850 without problem. I awaited from this 1860-70, but the situation is worse.

I will test other stick, but I think all will be the same.

For one stick 1.34 qpi is more than enough. I was on 1.28 with 6 gb.

Sounds like you may have a faulty stick then?

No, all stick same, works but not on factory default, only lower.

Now I'm trying GEIL, reached 1870 without problem.
The problem is that from 2x(3x2gb) kit one stick is dead from geil :-(
          No luck on memory upgrade...
          Argh.

Working lower than stock means the memory is faulty, I would RMA it if I were you.

May I suggest Crucial or Mushkin to you? They work just fine

Re: x-58 extreme maximum memory capacity is 6 gb?!

Yes, but I not checked it in other mobo, to be sure about it.

In my country crucial and mushkin are not avaible.
Even no alternative for replacement right now.
Geil 1600 only in the store with cl7.

It is time to decide something, but really don't know, what can I do.

              Thanks for your help anyway,

Re: x-58 extreme maximum memory capacity is 6 gb?!

The new parts of the story:

I have replaced the two kit's of pair to another.
But the problem is the same.
I have played again all weekend without succes.
                      Please read my story.
Maybe what I need only set ram banks individually with
very little tweaking of advanced timings.
As you see, other pair of rambrand workoed in this mobo,
so the problem I'm sure in the advanced settings of the ram.

                      -
So, I have replaced the two pair of ocz1866 to another 2x6 gb.
And it's behave exactly the same.
But I have found a solution to 8 gb problem:

over 1750 can be seen only 8 gb of ram.

In windows siw or everest all slots are listed ok, the read memory info,
                      but still only 8 gb.

*The "solution" for booting up all 12 gb is b2b latency set to 4.*

In this case, all of memory over 1800 can be seen but of course there is a
                      performance loss. (16500 only)
And memory test also fail. Memory test ok on b2b cas latency of 8.

Any voltage setting not helped on this. (even qpi until 1.6-1.8, whith 6 gb is it only 1.38)
dram voltage on 1.65, tried until 1.68.
trfc is 144 because of 12 gb.

In this case I would thinking about motherboard failure, but now the intresting part of this:

I get 2x6 gb pair (not 12 gb kit, only 2x6 as ocz) of geil 1800 ram.

                      A. 6 gb kit ocz + 6 gb kit geil booted ok (but worked only until 1800)
                      B. 2x6 gb geil booted up again ok: 10 gb can bee see on bootup.
Because I have found later that 1 stick of geil is totally dead.
But still all working stick booted up (10gb)

*So the question is very obvious: How can it be that 2 pair of ocz can't seen on bootup without b2b cas latency ?*

Please, give it a try and put 12 gb ram of ocz rams to an gigabyte ud5 / or extreme board
and would be great any of official statement.
Now I'm really intrested, why this problem occur.

The performance and the price of these ram is great, I can't beleive it they can't be work together.

If you know about any advanced ram tweaking option I can do, please share with me.
What I have done is only raising to 10-10-10-30-2.
Trfc 144 always on 12 gb. And b2b latency to 4.

                      After 4 pair of 1866 trouble I can't beleive, I can't reach 1860-1880 with 9-9-9.
Because this mobo can set the rams individually I think for this work and on 6 gb I can reach this speed without any problem.

                      Thanks in advance,
                      Victor

I've had the same issues with mine. I have 12GB (6x2GB) of Corsair Dominator 1600.

Runs fine @ 1600 with just 6GB, but once I put in the 2nd kit of 6GB I have to downclock it to 1200 or else my system won't boot up properly.

It's supposed to be a design limitation with Intel's memory controller.

Although I've read on Corsair's forum that someone was able to get 12GB of his running just fine at 1600.

1600 is no problem here with 12 gb.

1800 is not overclock from an 1866 ram.
In this term 1600 is an overclock too.

Memory spec's are PER KIT, meaning each kit is designed to and will run at spec. Adding additional kits of memory does not always mean you can run stock spec's

Are you still mixing kits? Either way you may need to run them at 1600Mhz for stability, doing this would also allow you to use tighter timings anyway and could prove to perform better than 1800+ anyway
