  • Normal Settings for EP45-UD3P & E8400

    hi all and thanks in advance for any help

    i've searched a bit and have found countless information for overclocking this configuration, but what i am looking for is how to set the bios so my hardware (ram & CPU) just run to spec... when i look at my cpu in cpuid, it shows the core speed jump from 1999.6 to 2666.4 and the multiplier goes from x 6.0 to x8.0. the bus speed stays @ 333.3 MHz and rated FSB @ 1333.2. ont he memory tab in cpuid DRAM Freq shows 400 MHz FSB DRAM shows 5:6. what i am looking for is for my memory to run @ the rated 1066 PC2-6400 5-6-6-18 and the cpu to run @ 3.00 GHz

    Follow all of the suggestions in this post to get a stable stock setup.
    Follow steps 1 to 4 for additional help.
    Then set:
    CPU Clock Ratio ---------------------- : [9]
    Fine CPU Clock Ratio ----------------- : [0.0] < ignore if not available
    CPU Frequency ---------------------: ####

    Clock Chip Control
    Standard Clock Control
    CPU Host Clock Control --------------- : [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) ------------: [333]

    Static tRead Value --------------------: [6] for channels A & B

    Your fluctuating cpu multiplier and cpu speed are due to having the following enabled:

    CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) -------------- : [Disabled]
    CPU EIST Function -------------------- : [Disabled]

    Setting both of these to Disabled will give you full rated speed at all times, at the minor expense of higher power consumption at lower system loads.

    Your memory performance at 800MHz with tight memory timings will be virtually the same as running at 1066MHz with looser timings.
    You can reach 1066 memory speeds (at 3.0GHz) by using:
    Cpu Host Frequency = 400MHz
    Cpu multiplier = 7.5
    System Memory Multiplier = 2.66D
    And you will need to run looser timings for Static tRead Value and Standard Timing Control.

    Even at stock settings, you should still perform extended stability testing using:
    Prime95, OCCT, or Orthos; 3 separate tests using small FFTs, large FFTs, and Blend tests. Each test should be run for 8 to 24 hours.
    Note: Most errors will occur within a 6 hour time frame. An error in any of these tests indicates that your system is not stable.

      thanks for your reply!

      i think ihad figured out some of the settings myself, was running 7.5 x 400 and got the memory to read @ 1066, however i noticed my cpu idle temop had gone up a few degrees, normally about 35-36c and after it was 39-40c, i tried your recomendation and have the cpu running @ 333 x 9 and the memory tighter @ 800MHz, my temp is back to the normal range, i alos found the second "helper" that was varying my cpu readings, it wasn't in the mib tweaker so i had missed it, went looking and found the bugger, now its off, a question i have is, is it easier on the cpu to increase the multiplier rather than the fsb if you can.. going with 333x9 rather than 7.5x400?

        Glad to hear that you're making progress.

        There are some minor performance advantages to running at 333MHz instead of 400MHz if you don't want your system speed higher than 3.0GHz. You shouldn't have a 3 degree (C) increase in temperatures at 400MHz when your bios is properly set up. What is the ambient room temperature in the room?
        Keep in mind that you can probably run your memory at 1066 speeds using 9x333MHz and the 3.20B System Memory Multiplier. You can also run your memory at 800MHz using 400x7.5 and the 2.00B memory multiplier. Some of the bios settings will need to be changed at different cpu FSB speeds and running your memory at 1066 vs 800MHz.

        It will be MUCH easier for us to help you get an optimal setup if you'll post your hardware setup in your forum signature, including the following info:
        mobo model and version number
        bios version number
        cpu model and revision number
        memory brand/model number, size (e.g. 2x2GB) and a link to the memory's specs
        heatsink model (stock? aftermarket?)
        power supply unit brand/model
        etc.

        Providing your bios settings from the generic bios template (available in the post #2 link) will make it quicker and easier for us to provide additional suggestions to optimize your system, prevent possible errors, and it will help other forum members in the future.
        Providing the requested screen-shots from the link in post #2 will help us more quickly determine if some bios settings are not correct.

        Keep in mind that running at 3.60GHz is easily done with your hardware and won't require high voltage settings, either now or in the future.

        I don't want to sound overly harsh, but if you won't provide the requested information, many forum members won't waste their time trying to guess at what any problems or issues might be. Many of us are helping several members at the same time.

        There's a method to our madness, please co-operate with these simple requests. If you have any questions as to how to provide this information, just ask.

            Take a look at GA-EP45-UD3P - Won't boot with 450FSB for an example of how info is posted and shared in a productive way. You don't need to read all 13 pages of posts, but there's a lot of good info there.

            Often times others will post in the same thread with similar setups and related questions. This is why it's best to include your hardware setup in your forum signature. An external link to your memory's specs makes it quick an easy for us to double check info that relates to tweaking and overclocking. Sometimes posters will include links to external websites where related photos can be easily viewed.

                To have your ram at 1066 you need to manually set System Memory Multiplier 3.20B and DRAM Voltage to 2.1v, check the BIOS HWMonitor after reboot to see what voltage actually applied to the ram, if it is over/under volted adjust DRAM voltage so HWMonitor show the closest value to 2.1v possible.
                Start with spec timings 5-6-6-18, after you make sure the system is stable you may try and lower them as well as Static tRead Valur (performance Level in MemSet)
                You already set MCH Core to 1.2v so it may be sufficient. If not you may try to raise it a bit to 1.24-1.26v.

                  yeah, some of the info i got from the ocz forums reflected that the memory on a clean cmos or first boot, the ram would run @ pc-6400 speeds @1.800v, so i will prolly have to change the dram voltage to 2.1 to get what i'm looking for. i did notice that when i look thru the voltage settings right @2.1 (or maybe 2.0 the number goes "pink", i assume to imply possible dammage? but since that setting is where the ram is spec'd to run it's prolly ok...right?

                  one other question concerning voltage... in one the the stickies, it reccomends to up the voltage in several places by 0.1 to increase stability...

                    Don't worry about the the 2.10 volt bios setting turning red, it's Gigabytes way of saying "are you sure you know what you're doing?". Your memory can safely run at 2.15 volts if needed.

                    Ignore the 0.10 volt recommend increases, this doesn't apply to your mobo, especially when running at stock speeds. You want to run with the lowest voltage settings that are fully stable. You need to perform the extended stability tests mentioned at the end of post #2. When you make bios performance changes such as memory tweaks, you'll need to repeat your stability tests to ensure that there aren't any problems.

                    At your current 333MHz cpu setting, lowering Static tRead Value (aka tRD) to 6 for both memory channels (A & B) should be stable and will give you about a 3% improvement in memory performance. At 800MHz, you might be able to further improve memory performance by running your memory with tighter primary memory timings, such as 4-5-5-12 and possibly 4-4-4-12 with a 2.12 memory volt setting.

                    As Chike said, you can run your memory at 1066 speeds (with looser memory timings), but you probably won't see and real world performance gains. Before you make any further bios changes, save your current bios settings as a bios profile. Page 38 in your mobo user guide describes how to save multiple bios profiles and this post has some additional information.

                    Are you sure that your standard Cpu VID is 1.30 volts? As I recall, most e8400 standard cpu settings are 1.25 volts. This isn't a big deal, but there's no reason to over-volt your cpu at stock settings.

                      yeah, i'm sure about the Cpu VID is 1.30v. thanks for your advise. i'm curious, based on how the multiplier/fsb ram ratio work, i'm guessing there are several ways to get to 3.0GHZ and 800/1066 (gigabyte proclaims +1366), is there a rule of thumb for this? lowest fbs possible to obtain results? raise multiplier rather than fsb? or is it 6 in one hand- half dozen in the other?

                        Generally the easiest way to over clock a locked chip (the E8xxx can't have their multipliers raised farther than the default max) is to set the max multiplier and then raise FSB. It's also acceptible to lower the multiplier and increase the FSB further to get the same overclock.

                        With both methods you'll need to use whichever RAM multiplier keeps your modules at, below or maybe ever so slightly (10-20) above its rated speed.

                        You weren't very lucky with the VID of your chip. 1.3V is the highest I've seen for an E0 E8xxx. You can verify this for sure by running CoreTemp. The VID is displayed in the main window, 1/2way down. The high VID may be indicative of how well your chip will overclock, or it may not. It's not always the case, but often there's a pattern with low VID chips needing less voltage at a given speed to be stable than higher VID chips.

                          yeah, for the vid, both coretemp and easytune6 show 1.3, but the realtime(?) volt monitoring in cpuid main tab show the volts holding pretty constant @ 1.264v... so far the only volts i have increased are for the ram... went to 2.10, and in hrdware monitor in bios showed 2.08 so i bumped to 2.12 and the monitor shows 2.10...

                            2.1v on the Dram voltage is plenty suggest you take it back down.

                              ok, ocz said the ram needed to be at 2.1 to run at the pc-8500 1066 settings... so i should see how far back i can take the ram voltage and stay stable... so far, at the current ram voltage cpu vid left at 1.3, and dram at 2.12- readint @ 2.1 i've been running orthos for 7 hours, i guess its easier on hardware to run the least amnt of voltage thru them you can and remain stable?
