  • ep45-ud3r:8gb ddr2 @1066. is it possible?

    so i am running a ep45-ud3r, with a kentsfield quadcore 2.4 oc to 3.2

i am trying to get 8gb of OCZ Reaper HPC OCZ2RPR10662G to run at 1066. i have talked to both ocz tech support as well as gigabyte, both over the phone...i dont know what it is with people who are supposed to help over the phone.....but needless to say, the geniuses they hire....ugh. i was told by ocz tech twice that i would just have to run them at 800 and basically suck it up. why on earth would i want 8gb of ddr2 anyway? ugh. gigabyte was even more disappointing....their sage advice was "maybe the ram just dont like the board". "maybe the board cannot accept the ram"...... ok.

so i am now posting here and reading reading reading....whew. i am fairly new but not an idiot in relation to tweaking and oc a board. anyone have any timings and voltage suggestions for me?

settings i was using 5-7-7-20, tRFC 72, CR 2T. worked for a day and then the next morning...kaput.

my bios is f5. would flashing to f10 help me resolve my memory issues? thanks to everyone in advance who tells me something other than they just dont like each other

    Re: ep45-ud3r:8gb ddr2 @1066. is it possible?

Starting with the recommended settings for the RAM (on the side of the modules) which I believe are 5-5-5-15 @ 2.3V, increase MCH core. Start with 1.2V and try all the way up to 1.36V-1.38V in 0.02V increments.

8GB of RAM is hard to get running at its rated speeds, that much is true. There may also be a compatibility issue. have a search of the forum and you'll see 6-7 posts in the last few months regarding OCZ Reaper. If an increase of voltage and/or loosening of latencies doesn't work, there's no other alternative to either running at DDR-800 or removing 4GB. Unless you run virtual machines, CAD or audio/video/photo editing, the move down to 4GB will not be noticeable at all. If using 32 bit programs, even in a 64bit OS, the process won't be able to grow past 2GB in the first place.

      Agreed. ^

mr.jones, unless you know you need 8GB or more I wouldn't worry about it. I'm using 4GB of the same exact ram you're using and I'm loving it, in my custom made WinXP (178 MB ISO that is fully functioning and has built in AHCI/Raid drivers so install is painless compared to a stock XP combined with low memory/windows folder usage) I never have problems with memory, my hard drives are optimized extremely well with Ultimate Defrag and my Pagefile is only 64MB. (some games/apps need it on period to work)

Windows 7 64bit is also performing well on my second HD from what I'm seeing (only played with it for a few hours atm) so as Psycho said unless you need it I wouldn't sweat it.

        Re: ep45-ud3r:8gb ddr2 @1066. is it possible?

You might be able to run 8GB of memory at somewhat lower speeds in the 900 - lower 1000MHz range by selecting different cpu multiplier/host frequency and system memory multiplier.

In order for us to help, you should add your hardware list to your forum signature and post your current bios settings using the generic bios template below. Follow the suggestions in this post.
        Code:
        Motherboard: Model: Rev#: Bios Version:
        Cpu: Model
Ram: Brand, Model/Part#, Link to your ram's specs
Power Supply Unit: Brand, Model#, Wattage

Default settings for new setups that are not overclocked.

note: replace all ?? with the value displayed in your bios.
----> Replace "Auto" with manually set values.
