  • What is good 24/7 voltage for cpu?

Ok i have a quick question. I am proudly converting over to Watercooling because i have tried air... and it's not really giving me the performance i want. I am ordering Asetek KT03A-12VS WaterChill 120mm High-End CPU Water Cooling Kit (03-L-1340)*at SVC.com this will keep my cpu and core temps around 38C even at load, and with over 1.5 - 1.8 volts on vcore. So i'm curious, even when the cpu is kept this cool and say i have my vcore at 1.4+ constantly, will this still degrade my cpu's life?

Hate to be the bearer of the bad news, but if 24C CPU core temperature under load was achievable with entry level water cooling kits, all of us would be using them. The fact is, most entry level water cooling systems are inferior to the top end air coolers.

I wouldnt go that far :0 but for water coolingyou need to be extreme.
Some cpus wont go any faster even if embedded in permafrost etc
Water cooling cpu, might not be great unless you wc other components too.

Are you sure about that mate. I have seen many reviews and they all seem very good so far, yes mostly outdated but that just means they have had 2-3 years to improve thier original product. The only reason this is called an "Entry Level Cooling" product is because it doesn't include water blocks for a gpu and chipset. I don't need the "Complete Water Cooling" set they sell for 150$ more as i just want to cool the CPU. Have a look here... Re: What is good 24/7 voltage for cpu?

In answer to your question of the CPU voltage. Here's the link to Intel's Data Sheet covering your CPU.
          [URL="http://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/318732.pdf"]

Read page 17 with covers the Absolute Maximum and Minimum Ratings, and page 18 which covers the DC Voltage and Current Specification. This will answer your question about the CPU life span and if the CPU will degrade when pushing it to high core voltage.

Re: What is good 24/7 voltage for cpu?

Holy crap dude What are you going for 6Ghz or something? 1.8 Vcore will kill that chip pretty quick I would say. Intel recomment not going over 1.5 but that is not even very good for 24/7. Im running my E8500 @ 3.8 with 1.25vcore in BIOS. Stock. on a ASUS Artic Square air cooler no problemo. My Friggin chip is hotter than 24C when its off bro. So you have maybe got a sticky temp sensor or you have just fried your chip with 1.8v ??

To clear things up for everybody!!!! In my first post i edited my cpu temps full load to 38C lol. Sorry for the confusion. I was just wondering because i think ever since joining this site i have became how can i say this.... an OC FREAK!!!! The reason i was giving the example of 1.7-1.8 volts is because with the kit i'm ordering i've seen people back in 2005 overclock thier Pentium 4 comps from 2.66 to 3.84 on 1.7 volts and still kept thier temps at 35-38C load with this water cooler.

Lol. OC Freak. Yeah i get that bug sometimes to. Anyway back in 05 with pentium 4's maybe but with these 45nm processors of the future they do not and cannot take that kinda voltage. What speed do you want to get out of your CPU???? for 24/7 use I would not go over 1.4 but probably not even that high.

Re: What is good 24/7 voltage for cpu?

I've no experience with the kit you mentioned but from my own research for my own fist WC setup, overall looks like a pretty good starter kit, I would think your estimate of 38c might be a little low but not bad. You can always add a better pump down the road. 1.45v absolute max per Intel as I remember for your chip and I'd be surprised if you needed more than 1.30v for 4.0. As for cpu longevity I had a E8500 CO that was feed in excess of 1.6v on occasion, its still going but the MB died, PS problem.

Oh! My idea overclocking is, if I can afford to replace it I'll give it try.

Re: What is good 24/7 voltage for cpu?

Absolutely do not get that kit. You will be disappointed if you're an over clocking freak.

Save up and spend 300-400 of your chosen earth currency and get some decent kit that will give you the results you crave.

Look for at least a 240 radiator, better it be a 360 (3 fan, 120*3=360 is how the terminology works). Rads should be double thickness for maximum effectiveness, the kit one is 120 and single thickness. Contrary to popular opinion, the block isn't the most important component, the rad is. An average block with a superb rad will perform about equal if not better than a superb block with an average rad. Avoid Black Ice products, they're not worth the cost.

For a pump, look for one that takes 1/2" or so tubing and has a minimum of 200 Gal/hr flow rate. This means that your coolant will be more effective in both cooling the CPU and cooling itself via the rad, and alows more components to be added later, eg northbridge and fets. Buy a pump designed for PC cooling, not an aquarium pump. Another myth involves people saying you need flow to the CPU first, then other components. This is retarded. It doesn't matter the position of the components in the loop, the water will still reach the same equilibrium temp.

For the block, check out the Apogee GT, it's nice. Nuff said.

Avoid mixing metals and definately avoid anything where alumin(I)um is in contact with the water. This can lead to strange corrosion and blocked blocks and pumps.

A 400ml+ res is recommended, filled with the coolant of your choice. I personally would use distilled, de-mineralized bacteriostatic water and add my own additive to combat bacteria and algae, available from aquarium centres etc. There are coolants out there that may shave 1-2c off your temps but they cost a fortune. A couple of drops of "Water Wetter" in the aformentioned bacteriostatic water does just as good a job by sodtening the water and slightly changing its physical properties (surface tension etc).

Spend a little more and you get a lot more benefit with water cooling. If you insist on a kit, as it is easier to do and you get step by step instructions, go for the Swiftech H2O-220 kit here: Swiftech H2O-220 Apex Ultima Watercooling Kit - (Socket 462/478/LGA775/754/939/940/1366) it's 10 fold better than the kit you listed.

Good luck what ever you decide. And don't exceed around 1.6-1.65V, as just because you're cool doesn't mean you can't cause damage to the CPU. Voltage on its own is also a killer, regardless of heat produced. Aleslammer has it nailed, and I'll leave you with his wise words:
