X58 UD5 PSU problems

I'm having problems with my X58-UD5 and several power supplies. I got a corsair TX750 psu for my new i7 build. It would power on for a few seconds fans would spin then nothing. I returned it and got a seasonic m12d 850w. The machine sometimes boots fine after a cmos reset but will not restart again after a shutdown. The fan on the psu spins for a second then nothing, and a couple of led's near the ram slots remain lit. I have an old 500w seasonic psu that works fine with the build. The machine starts everytime. Which makes me think its the psu, but two in a row? And the second one starts sometimes. I beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with my motherboard. I would like to upgrade my psu to something more powerful, but nothing new seems to work. I have the f6 bios installed.

What a strange problem. It's certainly not the usual kind of PSU compatability. It's rare that a board will have problems with two really top quality supplies.

It does kind of make me thing it might be either the board, or the other main consumer of DC power, the GFX card. Not saying that the card is faulty, but the current gen of cards even in 2D mode consume a not insignificant amount of juice.

I know the Corsair TX isn't modular, but if I remember rightly, the M12D is. The first thing I would check is which cables come from which rails (2 12V rails on the M12D I think). If using one GFX card and the connection configuration allows, make sure the P8 connector is on the other rail. Generally double check the load is balanced. It shouldn't matter as it's a premium PSU with bags of power, but worth checking out.

I would also take the PSU to another machine and give it a quick test. If the PSU functions fine, maybe an RMA of the board would be good, to eliminate it from the equation. You could ofcourse test the other components all on another board, but it can be difficult. Not everyone has a spare board lying around.

2 Bad Power Supplies! Its not Unheard of. Its happend to me. But I think there may be more to this story than a bad PSU. Its a wierd on alright.

I'm using a a really crappy gfx card right now ati x1300, my 4890 toxic is supposed to come Wednesday. I tried my friends old 470 watt psu, which again worked fine, sigh. I'm going to try out the psu on another system hopefully tomorrow. Its frustrating because i can get it to very rarely boot with the m12d, but the next shutdown, and power on nothing.

So the psu seemed to work alright in a different system. Not sure what to do now.

So your old PSU works fine, every time??? Use it for a bit till you get that Ever so sweet graphics card to make sure that it is working perfect. Theres no Logical reason that those two high end PSU's wont work in your rig. It just doesnt make sense.

Picked up an Antec Signature 850 today, and everything seems to be working. Board just didn't seem to like those first to psu's.

The signature is sweet. When I first saw one I p155ed myself with laughter. "An 80mm fan? Haha! It's gonna be loud as fook!" But it's actually as quiet as some 135mm/140mm cooled PSU's. Extremely well designed bit of kit.
